i would probably eat some cheese too. i agree with you - the preggos there must eat it, right?
i have so much family in greece and i know they all eat feta throughout their PG and nothing ever happens.
and as far as the wine - make it a wine spritzer - then you wont feel so guilty Chat Icon

ETA: btw - have the greatest time -- so jealous!!!! i was hoping to get there at some pt this PG, but now that im having twins im too scared to leave the country Chat Icon

I would have some of both, in small quantities, but I'm not very strict that way. Have a wonderful trip!!

Re: Since I can't drink the wine - would you eat the cheese?

when i found out i was pg i asked my dr about feta cheese...i'm greek Chat Icon

he said sweetie if feta cheese was such a problem there wouldn't be any greeks in the world.

thinking he has a piont isn't this whole eating cheese etc a new thing.... just make sure it appeas to be reputable...i think its the refirgeration that really causes the problem for bacteria.

Again, its the veiny cheese and cheeses with mold that you have to watch out for. You can eat most of the cheeses, but any cheese with blue veins or a moldy skin you should not eat. And I am super laid back with these things, the bacteria in the cheese is nothing to do with it being refridgerated, its to do with the listeria in the mold in the cheese.

Thanks Ladies. I've decided I will "cheese" it up this vacay, but DH would kill me if I drank anything. Maybe I'll sneak a sip or too.

We leave tomorrow night - have a great week! Chat Icon

They have stricter standards in Europe - my dad brought home all this cheese from italy and i was nervous to eat it but my ob/gyn uncle said he would be more nervous to eat cheese made here than in europe - not sure if that is true, but ate a ton of it and things seem ok!

Honestly, I would have a glass of wine and some of the cheese. My doctor told me wine in moderation was ok.

Re: Since I can't drink the wine - would you eat the cheese?

Don't eat the cheese if ur gonna be nervous about it after. Then it's not worth it.

I preface that I am not a scientist, lol, but I don't really think that it's okay b/c preggos there have been eating it forever. It made me think of the moral of the story in War of the Worlds- the aliens never earned their right to stay alive on this planet b/c it took millions of years for species on Earth to evolve/become tolerant of all the bacteria and junk on the micro level. I don't know if the same holds true for women in France eating cheeses for a few hundred years, lol, but it did cross my mind... I've seen plenty of things on nat geo where certain tribes eat poison fish etc.

That said, have fun. Maybe go to a cheese shop where the counter person actually knows about the cheeses and can help you instead of risking a wrong answer from some young waiter, u know?
