Size for Warm Outer Clothing?

Okay, I'm confused. What size would you recommend for warm outer clothing for a new baby? I have one outfit that is 3-6 months, and I was trying to decide if it's worthwhile to buy something for 0-3 months. I was thinking of buying 0-3, then I started thinking it might be too tight if I'm putting this on over other clothing. So now I'm thinking the 3-6 month outfit might be okay right away, even if it's a little big.

My baby will most likely be average-large, though hard to say. So far his estimated weight is 6 lbs. 13 oz. He is due Dec. 1st, so he could wear this stuff all winter.

It depends on the weight of the particular brand. The outer outfit that I got for the baby to wear home from the hospital I got in 0-3 months because it goes up to 15 pounds and they baby will definately be below that for at least a little while.
