Skim coating walls

Trying to get DS's room done. We spackled a few holes and it looks AWFUL!!! We are obviously not good at spackling and sanding. Plus, the paint looks different where the spackle is...smoother than on the rest of the wall where it is covering just paint on sheetrock. So now I'm thinking the best thing is to put a coat of spackle on the entire wall in order to make it look uniform.

How much would this cost, for a small bedroom...say 10x12? And there is only 1 full wall...the other 3 have a big window, a closet and the bedroom door on it. And it would only be on the top 1/2 of the wall. And can you recommend somebody?

It's not the cost, that might be a total of $50 for supplies - it's the TIME. Are you thinking of hiring someone to do this? If so, it might make more sense just to have them resheetrock the wall and make it paint ready. It will take you 3 almost full days to skim coat a wall. Spackle, dry, sand, clean, repeat, then paint. Even the quick dry spackle takes about 4-6 hours minimum to dry, 24 is ideal. I think I mentioned on your first thread, DH and I did an entire room, we spent well over a full week on it.

I would NOT resheetrock an entire room because you messed up a few spackle holes. That is insane. Plus, that takes a ton of time as well and is a bigger mess. Once the new sheetrock is up, you still have to spackle every seam multiple times. You're not really saving yourself time at all, you're actually turning a minor project into something much bigger............and considerably more expensive.

You can hire someone to skim coat, it goes pretty quickly. DH has skim coated entire rooms in our house and that was WAY easier than resheetrocking a whole room, which we've also done.

If you're not good at spackling I would absolutely hire someone to do the skim coat job or your walls won't look right.
