Smoking in your car

So NJ wants to ban people from smoking in their cars and it's not a health issue. They claim it's a distraction for drivers. Do you agree with the ban?

I personally think they are going too far with this one -- unless they plan to make it illegal to do ANYTHING distracting while driving - eating, talking to a passenger, drinking, changing a CD, READING THE NEWSPAPER (I've seen it!) etc.

ETA> i think smoking is just as bad as a cell phone. Same with eating and drinking.

But people will do it anyway.

Re: Smoking in your car

I think this one is ridiculous. Next you won't be able to smoke in your house. And they are saying because its a distraction, well, changing the radio is a distraction, are they going to ban car radios next?? Turning on winshield wipers is a distraction, are we not going to be allowed to use them and drive in the rain anymore? I think they are going way too far.

Re: Smoking in your car

I would be happier if it were because of a health issue, but hey, whatever cuts down America's smoking makes me happy.

By the way, i can't BELIEVE how many Europeans smoke! I mean, we saw young teenaged girls having their cigs lit by their Dads like it was nothing! I hate it!

Re: Smoking in your car

I don't smoke anymore (3 years Chat Icon ) but seriously, why does the government insist on trying to control every aspect of our lives!
1- when they pay me ridiculously high insurance and my ridiculously high payments, then they can tell me what to do in my car

2- can you imagine the insane increase in road rage from many many angry smokers who will still haev to fight traffic & not be able to smoke while they are in the car for hours? Speaking as a former smoker, when I was into it if I could not smoke while sitting in traffic I was one cranky beyotch.Chat Icon

I think their hands are full trying to enforce the driving laws we have now. Rregular cell phone use, speeding, using directionals, seat belt use, etc. Maybe law enforcement/highway patrol should get a handle on these issues then start fine tuning other distractions.

But I agree with the poster above that asks where does it end? Changing the radio staion? Adjusting the heat?

Actually I was watching Dateline I think the other night....and they said that people who sing while listening to the car radio (you know, when you are all alone and you sign as loud as you can Chat Icon ) improves driving.

While I'm not a smoker, I think this is ridiculous. If they ban smoking....they should also ban eating, drinking, READING, watching TV, and kids...since kids can be pretty distracting while you're driving. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Smoking in your car

I think they need to concentrate on the speeders weaving through traffic, not using signals, cutting people off -- these guys are never stopped, and they are the truly dangerous drivers out there, no the smokers.

Can anyone say....Big Brother is watching you???

Re: Smoking in your car

I think it's an absolutely absurd idea! They should stop people from honking their horns for absolutely no reason at all. That always scares the crap out of me and one day I'm going to drive right off the road!

Re: Smoking in your car

I think its great! Smoking is just another distraction that can cause an accident.

And when you say... well turning on the radio and changing channels is a distraction... well they are trying to fix that as well in new cars. Its called steering wheel radio controls!

Actually... unless you have used these controls... you wouldn't know.

Steering wheel controls are GREAT. When I had them in my Intrepid... i couldn't believe how simple they were to use.

I even found that I was 10x more glued to the road when using them... rather than fiddling around with a radio knob.

I have to agree ... I do believe that the smoking thing IS taking it a bit too far.. I am not a smoker either so I am not basing my opinion on such. I just do not necessarily feel that its THAT big of a distraction. I think people putting on their makeup while driving and eating all sorts of food is far more distracting! .. yet should we ban that too? I THINK NOT

AND really, they NEVER enforce the cellphone law (which I DO think is a good law) so what makes us think that they are REALLY going to enforce this??!! Chat Icon
