Re: Smoking in your car
There are so many distractions to people in cars how are they ever going to fix them? I admire the thought but I just can't get behind it when every 3rd vehicle I pass has someone swerving their wheel while talking on their phones

And when you say... well turning on the radio and changing channels is a distraction... well they are trying to fix that as well in new cars. Its called steering wheel radio controls!
It will still be a distraction!!
Actually... unless you have used these controls... you wouldn't know.
Steering wheel controls are GREAT. When I had them in my Intrepid... i couldn't believe how simple they were to use.
I even found that I was 10x more glued to the road when using them... rather than fiddling around with a radio knob.
Have used these controls and it is a distraction.

I'm not a smoker, but I think people should be allowed to if they want.

Re: Smoking in your car
I think theyre defiantely crossing a line here, and while this totally screams "public opinion/ election votes", i think its pretty ignorant of them to turn their Focus to this when there are much more serious issues that need to be tended to- i really feel like their Priorities are totally out of whack.
Also, i find it pretty assanine that they dont want you to smoke a cigarette in your car, Yet, you can have a DVD player in it I get more distracted by the SUV in front of me that has Shrek glaring out the back window than i do by having a cigarette in my hand

Have used these controls and it is a distraction.
Then you must be easily distracted and shouldn't be driving.
Does turning the wheel to make a right turn distract you too? What about putting your foot on the brake?

I think its great! Smoking is just another distraction that can cause an accident.
And when you say... well turning on the radio and changing channels is a distraction... well they are trying to fix that as well in new cars. Its called steering wheel radio controls!
Does everybody in the world have a new car?? No, so if one person has the "super easy" steering wheel controls, the next person won't, so it kinda defeats a purpose unless everyone has it!!

i didn't hear about that and I live in NJ! My DH (a smoker) will have a fit!
I don't think it should be banned because it's your car and your right to do what you want in it.

You're so funny
I'm with you Kristin, I use them too and find myself no less distracted and I no, I don't have a problem with right turns or breaking!
I can only imagine how the rate of road rage incidents will increase, if they do ban it.

Not really, you can't use a hand held cell phone in a car. That's what I think the law is trying to say...it's a distraction to driving not necessarily addressing the health issue surrounding smoking.

Re: Smoking in your car
Sorry but thats ridiculous... smokers smoke their cigs like 2nd nature, its not a distraction.
If they do this, they should do away with stick shift cars. I use this as a comparison because the people who can drive a stick dont even notice, you know?

What about taking your eyes off the road to look at what station you turned to a$$hole.
ETA I know what # Krock is on my preset I don't have to look I memorized where they are on my radio. BUT when using hand controls you cant tell what station you always turned to.

Only a non-smoker would try to tell you that smoking while driving is a distraction. It's a bunch of BS as far as I'm concerned.
