Snow removal question Queens and LI
I'm in queens ( have not moved to our house on LI yet) and everything is a total disaster. none of my streets (right off union tpke) have been plowed. We can't get out of here!
My family members live on LI (mainly massapequa and massapequa PK) and are totally clear, driving around going to work.
WTH is going on here? is DSNY to blame for this disaster ?? anyone have any insight , I'm getting pretty pizzed and can't imagine why ppl in nassau are all plowed and we are not

Re: Snow removal question Queens and LI
Yea my mom noticed and said the same thing..Its ironic that this time, NYC streets are a total disaster and most Long Island streets are completely clear. DH drove me to the Port Washington LIRR this morning and he takes a lot of local roads and we were shocked at how clear the service road off the LIE was...
Then I was on the LIRR and looked at some of the side streets in Queens (off Northern Blvd, Elmhurst, etc) and shocked at how many cars were still stuck in the snow, the streets were unplowed..
My friend says to blame Mayor Bloomberg because he fired so many MTA and DSNY employees that there simply isn't enough manpower to clean all the NYC streets.

oh I didn't realize they let MTA and DSNY go, I thought union workers can't be fired ? if that's the case I'm sure its def. part of the problem

Re: Snow removal question Queens and LI
THat is why we pay a lot more money in taxes in LI...THe difference is unbelievable...we just left my parents house in Flushing/Bayside and it is incredible that their rd hasnt been plowed 48 hrs later....my street has been plowed since Mon morning!!
We went into manhattan yesterday and it was not much better than queens...they really messed up with this one!!!!
I thought they were prepared... apparently not!!!

Re: Snow removal question Queens and LI
Difference is also more places to push the snow in LI and lLess cars parked on the street which makes for easier plowing and snow removal than in Bklyn and Queens. Homeowners have driveways and can push their own snow to the sides easily, where in Queens this poses an issue of where to dump the shoved snow.
It's almost as if it never snowed here in Suffolk where I am, no inconvenience at all. But then I look outside and see 2-3 feet of snow and remember we did have a blizzard.
eta- DSNY working hard I am sure but it's more than they can handle and it's a matter of how to plow with cars all around and where to push/put the snow then.

Re: Snow removal question Queens and LI
I think there are a couple of reasons. I think there is a lack of man power since they did let go some 400 workers a while back. Also, there were a bunch of not so bright people who decided to drive their cars in a blizzard and got stranded and abandoned their cars in the middle of the street, hindering plowing activities. Seriously, it looks like a parking lot in a lot of the streets. In addition, this storm left ridiculous snow drifts because of the wind making it difficult for even plow trucks to get by some of them. But I have to say, snow removal has always gone well in my neighborhood (in Bk), even in the bigger storms including last year. They always would go by throughout the actual snowfall and after. I've never seen it like this.

my BILis NYC Sanitation and he said that this storm was very hard because of all the stranded and abandoned cars blocking streets. The plows just couldn't get through. That is one of the reason. Lack of manpower may be another.

Re: Snow removal question Queens and LI
My husband works for DSNY.... so I do have some insight.
They have not hired a new class in about 3 years... they usually hire multiple classes a year. So the man power of the DSNY is much much smaller than it was 3 years ago. That is one problem.
the other problem is that on Long Island there aren't cars on the street... so those streets are much much easier to plow than the NYC streets. Especially considering one ways and the tight space they have to begin with.
Then you have the issues of the cars that were able to drive around... A LOT, I mean A LOT of cars are stuck and abandoned in many many places... to the point that a plow cannot even get to plow the streets because of it.
Aside from that... you have other cars that have been driving around since the blizzard (and in the blizzard - DH said there were SO SO SO many cars out... more than he's ever seen in prior years working in blizzards) and they have packed down parts of the snow that the plow is unable to scrape the snow up from the streets... literally my DH is going down blocks and the snow is tightly packed down with sooo many inches and its just frozen solid that the plow is unable to scrape the snow up. This is another huge issue they are having.
They did get major roads... like the highways and queens blvd. I drove to long island today for a doctor's appt.. so there def are plowed streets... it's not that NO streeets are plowed.. it's that they can't really get the side streets done.
there is also less places to put the snow in queens than there is on LI... LI has A LOT more space.
The plows are also being called to not only dig cars out but also ambulances with patients in them... this is yet another thing that takes away from them being able to plow the streets.
I can with 100% confidence say that the DSNY workers are working HARD... REALLY REALLY REALLY HARD!! I cannot stress that enough... they are doing 14+ hour shifts... with NO DAYS off ... and they will not have a day off until AT LEAST jan 10.. yes they will be in plows for new years eve as well. On monday they worked 16+ hour shifts, in white out conditions... the plows themselves were even getting stuck. Please do not blame the DSNY workers... they are working extraordinarily hard. if you want to blame someone... blame bloomberg for not hiring ANY classes in 3 years (They FINALLY just hired one class but they are still in training and not out on the streets yet)..... blame the people for going out during the blizzard and after for getting stuck, tying up plow time AND for packing the snow down sooo tightly that a plow is unable to scrape it off the street. DO NOT BLAME THE DSNY WORKERS!! It is not their fault!

Re: Snow removal question Queens and LI
PS - this is also one of the worst blizzards we have had in a LONG time... 20 inches PLUS crazy snow drifts!!!
and in years past... NYC did not have the problem is is having right now. Streets were all plowed in a fairly timely manner.
DH said more people were out driving around in this blizzard than he's ever seen in other storms... WHY WHY WHY were those people out??? Some people actually abandoned their cars on HIGHWAYS because they got stuck that night!!! CRAZY to me!!! Just crazy!!!

ditto - my street is usually nice and clear very soon after a storm. this year no one could get to us b/c of stupid drivers leaving their cars

Re: Snow removal question Queens and LI
And for the record... I have heard of LIers complaining that streets are NOT all plowed there either.
One for sure is in Rosyln... IDK where the others are... but there are quite a few people saying the same thing about the streets on LI. Just the main streets are plowed.
I think a lot of LI depends on your specific town though.
LI is run VERY different from NYC. Apples and Oranges.

Also some parts of LI didn't get as much snow as NYC. I drove to Huntington today and it looks like they only got half the snow I have at home.

This might have something to do with it as well. My friend lives out in the Lake Grove area and told me she got about 16' which is still a LOT of snow, but I got about 8-10' more than that by me.

I have lived in NYC for 12+ years now (ever since I came to the US) I lived in Manhattan for years and now in Queens for little over 4 yrs and I don't EVER remember this happening before. They always start cleaning ASAP and streets are pretty clear within hrs , but this time it's just unbelievable, I don't know what's going on.

My mom is in douglaston, and she can't get out, her side streets have not been touched or plowed yet.
I am in massapequa, and the plows started coming around sunday afternoon, all night long and all day yesterday
I would say they passed by in tandem with another plow about 25 times

Re: Snow removal question Queens and LI
MrsKS- That was VERY well stated! My DH works for sanitation as well and it upsets me to see so many hurtful comments toward them. It's not their fault they don't have enough manpower or they can't get down a block because there are cars blocking the streets. They're working very, very hard and out long hours. My DH got called in on Christmas, worked 12 hours Sunday and 14 hours yesterday. His plow even got stuck today (which has happened to other guys as well). It's a very bad storm with bad circumstances.

DING DING DING!!
this is yet another factor.
My area got 21.5 inches of snow.... Suffolk got between 6 and 18 inches... HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Here's a link showing all snow totals for towns reported (though unofficial). The boroughs and LI all had varying totals based on area.
There is no big difference b/w 18 and 21. 6 and 21, yes, but 18 and 21 no. Most parts of LI got at least 12 inches.
