so confused about bottles (glass vs. playtex drop in's)

Just when I think I have it figured out....I start questioning myself ! With all the BPA warnings out there I was thinking of going with either Born Free or Evenflo glass bottles, but then some people were saying they wouldn't use glass bottles because they are heavier for the child to hold while feeding themselves and they could break. Then I was thinking of Playtex Drop in's, but I'm confused about whether they are safe are not. Does anyone have more info on the playtex drop ins?

Drop Ins are safe because you throw away the liner after one use.

ETA: DS hated the Playtex Drop Ins. Mainly the nipple, but he does perfectly fine with the Avent Tempo bottles, which have drop in liners as well.

I have used the drop ins since day one....and we LOVE them. It is so easy to use, and the liners are already steralized so they are safe to use. You just drop in and fill to whatever level your DC is drinking. I wouldn't use any other now that we have used these! Good luck in your choice!

Re: so confused about bottles (glass vs. playtex drop in's)

As a PP said, drop ins are safe. However, I personally find them very annoying (my niece and nephews were on them and they just never got all of the milk / formula out no matter how hard they sucked).

I wouldn't use glass bottles either b/c of the weight (it'll take longer for your DC to be able to hold the bottle on their own and they're heavier in a diaper bag). Born Free has BPA free plastic bottles, which is what I'll be using.

Re: so confused about bottles (glass vs. playtex drop in's)

I bought Evenflo glass and DD didnt like them so we switched to the DropIns and she does well on them. I like them...the only PITA is having to buy liners all the time.

BPA is supposedly a chemical found in plastic that when leached can cause cancer. There has been much debate on this because most plastic baby bottles have some form of BPA in them. But supposedly the chemical can only be released when you boil the bottle in water or heat it up past a certain temperature.

Re: so confused about bottles (glass vs. playtex drop in's)

I registered for some Plastic Born Free (BPA free) and some drop-ins. I'll try them both and see what works best for us. I heard the glass bottles are pretty sturdy but I would guess they are heavier so I would rather go with BPA-free plastic.

Re: so confused about bottles (glass vs. playtex drop in's)

I used glass b/c IMO nothing gets clean like glass does.
Yes, they are heavier- but honestly when we went out- I don't think we needed more than 2 bottles at a time- it isn't like they weigh 30 pounds

It did take DD longer to hold the bottle on her own- almost a year- although i'm not sure it's because it was so heavy or b/c she wanted to be "taken care of".

The only glass bottle that was broken was b/c it fell over in the sink (which is porcelain -sp- and breaks everything)- dd has thrown a bottle over the side of the high chair and it survived.

Of course, if you have ceramic floors- it might break (or chip the floor tile)!

I really really really cannot recommend the glass ones enough- my only suggestion is to switch out the nipples- they come with latex, but I switched them for silicone.

I think we are going to end up doing something similar. We'll register for the evenflo glass bottles and the playtex drop ins.

FYI- If you plan to BF, it is not recommended to use glass bottles with BM- something with the way the BM breaks down and actually sticks to the sides of the bottle.

We use Playtex Drop-ins and LOVE them.

Other BPA-safe bottles include: Sassy MAMs plastic, Gerber (colored plastic).

I'm using the plastic BPA free Born Free bottles and DS seems to like them so far.

This was confusing to me also, and I didn't want to deal with glass bottles if I could help it. Lots of people like the drop-ins, and I think they are safe since you use them once, but I haven't tried them yet.

Re: so confused about bottles (glass vs. playtex drop in's)

I currently have the Gerber plastics and the Evenflo glass....

I will wait til DD is here, and try them out to see if she takes to them. I will mostly be using them when Brian wants to feed her, or we are out.... other than that I will EBF.

If those 2 brands don't work out for her, I will be going for the Born Free's. I registered for them, but haven't received them as of yet.

I will be using glass as well, originally thought about born free plastic but have since decided to go with glass, they were used for many years and worked for many moms so I'm hoping will work well with my DS. I will be using evenflo glass and purchased the silcone nipples as well!!
