So I had DD's CPSC (EI for 3+) committee meeting today
and I have mixed feelings on the results.
Some of you may know my DD had sudden onset anxiety and stuttering. Her stuttering was determined to be miild, but the real concern was with the anxiety. It's the chicken or the egg as to whether the stuttering is causing the anxiety or vice versa. Anyway they had a psychologist evaluate her in the home and in preschool. They also had me and DH, her current preschool teachers and her former daycare teachers all complete a questionnaire on her behavior. They also spoke to each of us individually.
Well her results state "severe to clinical depression" I can NOT imagine what causes an almost 3 year old to be so sad. Where did I go wrong as a parent? I'm happy she qualified for family counseling - 2x a week at school and 1x a week at home - to help her through this, but at the same time I question myself. It is so hard to hear.

Oh my- you poor thing. You did NOTHING wrong. Try to realize that sometimes depression/anxiety is just a chemical imbalance that has occurred and that it's not based on something you did.
Try to see the positive in that YOU recognized that your DD needed help and now she's getting it. How wonderful that this was caught so early. hug:

I wouldn't beat yourself up...you didn't do anything wrong. I think you did everything right! You found the problem now, while she is young, and are getting help. That's the best you can do for her. I think it's chemical to be "depressed" at this age, and maybe they can determine how to treat it.

Re: So I had DD's CPSC (EI for 3+) committee meeting today
I know this is hard, but look at it this way, you are doing all that you can do.
Not sure if you know, ( I share more about my DD under "Children With Special Needs", but I have been and still am going through very hard times with my DD.
The Diagnosisis that are given sound very extreme and very scary, but, keep in mind, she is still just a baby. A diagnosis has to be given. That does not define her, and it doesn't mean it is permanent. Her symptoms just meet the criteria. You are getting services for her and hopefully for you to learn how to make life better for her and your family.
I totally understand how you blame yourself, I do it all the time. The blame and the guilt that I feel keeps me awake it night. And...what have I really done?? Nothing, just love my child. Do I lose my patience, anyone would. We dream about the perfect baby and child, but sometimes we get a curve ball. I am hoping that all of these trials will somehow make me a better person.
What I'm trying to say is IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT... I am slowly coming to realize that it's not mine either. People are born with a certain personality, characteristics and predispositions to certain things.
Just do the best that you can, it will all work out.
If you ever need to talk, please fm me anytime.

Re: So I had DD's CPSC (EI for 3+) committee meeting today
As parents, all we want to do is protect our children. The minute something goes wrong, we automatically blame ourselves. I know it's easier said than done, but please don't feel guilty. Like a PP stated, you caught this so early and got her evaluated quick. I know so many parents who see certain signs and brush it off because they think it's a"phase" or just their DC's personality. I applaud you for taking action immediately and because of that your DD will get the help she needs NOW rather then later.
Does anyone in your family suffer from depression? What are they suggesting?

Re: So I had DD's CPSC (EI for 3+) committee meeting today
Remember a diagnosis like that it is OPINION by a psychologist- not a fact. It was probably the only area that they could find that fit all the criteria. Be grateful for the services but I don't see how a 3 year old can have severe depression- I know its a chemical reaction in the brain- but I can't see how ANYTHING you did led to it!
I am so in shock over this for you! It just doesn't make sense. Please FM me if you need support!

You did nothing wrong - you are trying your best for her, and doing everything you can! How do they even diagnose something like that?!

First, . Second, neither your or your DD did anything wrong. Please be proud of your maternal instincts and trusting yourself to know that your DD needed help. You are an amazing mom to be so insightful that you got your DD help. Like the other girls said, it could be hormonal and the sooner your DD receives services the better off she will be. I hope and pray for the best for your family.

It is NOT your fault - many times this is exactly what it is. You are a GREAT mom for taking care of it! It is the best thing you could do for your DD. You deserve a pat on the back for getting it diagnosed so soon - many people never get a proper diagnosis or find out way later in life

It is NOT your fault! As you (or may not know, I post a lot more on Special Needs), my DS has a lot of delays. It took me a long time to listen to others when they say "Its not your fault". It's not!

I can imagine how hard that had to be one you. Remember clinical depression of any kind is probably nothing you did wrong. She can have chemical imbalances and such and there is probably nothing you could have done about it.

Re: So I had DD's CPSC (EI for 3+) committee meeting today
I am so sorry that the diagnosis came back the way it did...but it's just an opinion and with further evaluation and some time I think they will understand this better. In the meanwhile...please know that things can only get better. You have been nothing short of supportive and loving...and determined to get your child help.
This is not your fault In no way, shape or form. You should be proud that you stood up for your daughter and that you pushed to get this evaluation...to help her. And while you may take any failure as your own (as is a mother's nature) you must know that on this path to help your DD every single success will be because of your love, your support and your dedication.
I cannot wait for the post that updates with her progress so I can applaude you too!

Stop blaming yourself...you did nothing wrong and everything you are doing seems right. Clinical depression is an illness just like cancer or a heart condition. It's a result of something being "off" clinically not because of something wrong with the nurturing aspect.
By finding this now and addressing it; you are probably saving her YEARS of sadness and depression.
Hugs for you...

Oh Jodi I'm so sorry. You did NOTHING wrong. You are a fantastic mom to your kids and give them everything a mommy has to offer. And she knows that! Please don't beat yourself up. You now know and have a game plan to get your happy little girl back. She is a very bright little girl and has a great life ahead of her. Keep up the good work and give her a hug for me!
