How do they even diagnose something like that?!
Basically a psychologist came to the house and evaluated her. It started as some normal testing (questions, picture recognition, etc.) DD was doing great as long as she was getting the questions right. Once they became too difficult she started becoming very anxious and frustrated. Funny thing is the psychologist never told her when the answer was wrong. Anyway, the psychologist also just watched interactions in the home. Just sat in the background and observed. She also went to preschool and did the same. No interaction, just discretely watched.
The observation showed that she doesn't speak in school, has panic attacks (in school), not interacting with the other children (she has been with most of these children for 2 years and was previously interacting with them), lack of assertiveness (she's getting pushed around and bullied because she will not stand up for herself at all i.e. if someone takes her toy or pushes her she just stands there looking sad), complaining she is ill or tired to not participate in activities.
Also me, DH and her former and current teachers were all interviewed individually. In addition to that we all had to fill out a 100+ question questionaire (sometimes, always, never type thing) regarding her behavior and abilities. Turns out all of answers we each submitted were very similar just to different degrees. She scored above average on all areas except 4. Depression, anxiety, somatization (sp?) and internalization (don't remember the exact terminology.) Her score for those were at BEST "at risk" to "clinically significant."
So the scores on the written questionairre combined with serveral observations led to the conclusion that she has some sort of depression (probably caused by anxiety.)
They are hoping the therapy will help find out what is causing the anxiety and use role playing to help her deal with those situations. Kind of teach her how to cope.

I think it is amazing that you knew to take the initiative to get her evaluated and now she will get the help she needs. I cannot imagine what you are going through and I wish you and your little girl all the best.

Nothing at all that you did. You are going to get your little girl the help that she needs. Many as you go through this.

It's tough to hear that anything is other than typical for your DC.
My attitude towards EI now is to try not to focus too much on the diagnosis, but rather look ahead to the goals we are setting and on the activities and suggestions of the therapists. This puts a more positive spin on it for me. If I start Googling or reading too much, I can make myself crazy.

Jodi
Its totally not your fault. Im glad that you caught this so early. I still can beleive that they can diagnose depression in a 3 year old. I was shocked and so was my mom and Patrick. Im sure therapy will help. If you need anything let me know.

Re: So I had DD's CPSC (EI for 3+) committee meeting today
Jodi, please know that clinical depression and anxiety are due to chemical imbalances and misfires in the brain. They are the most common disorders found in Americans. If anything, you should be looking at the amazing job you and DH have done identifying an issue for your daughter. Where some parents may have thrown their hands up in the air and not known what was wrong, you guys knew there was something deeper and pursued it. You now are in a position to give your daughter the power to take control of issues and be a better, stronger individual for it. That, in my book, is amazing.
