remember, when Gulliver traveled....

so, I have a question about internals

my doc has been going "IN" there at every appt.

is this not an internal? she checks to see if the cervix is still closed.

is anything else going to happen to me going forward? I keep hearing about pain and so far they don't really hurt.

maybe I have a cavernous vagine?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: so, I have a question about internals

When pregnant with DD, my old doc did an internal at every appointment pretty much. They never felt worse at the end so I never worried about them.

My new practice doesn't do them until the last couple months.

Re: so, I have a question about internals

Those sound like internals to me. I don't think they hurt either.

Re: so, I have a question about internals

ive had 2 internals on sunday and they were extremely painful. Im dilated 2cm already.
Ive had another internal done a few weeks ago and my cervix was closed and it didnt even phase me at all. Didnt feel anything.

I thought it was odd and spoke to my sister, she said for her when her cervix was closed internals did not hurt at all, when she was dilated they were torture.
Plus the ones i got on sunday No lube used at all (tmi sorry). Asked my dr about this yesterday (a resident did my internals at the hospital on sunday) and my dr said internals are better to be done without lube to get an accurate reading and test results (whatever that means)

My doc didn't do them until 37 weeks unless you have cramping, bleeding, etc. They did not hurt at all for me. Not even the ones when I was in labor and fully dilated.

I'm convinced this is what I have b/c they don't hurt at all!!! The only time it hurt me was when they ruptured the membranes- and that was to try to get things moving on labor. Otherwise, it's nothing. Doesn't hurt at all.

Since your dr. is always down there, internals are nothinng new to you. They might poke a little more the closer you get but that's about it.

Re: so, I have a question about internals

wow..i asked my dr's office at my 30 week visit when the internals start and the nurse said they dont normally do them until the end, or if im leaking fluid or cramping.

they did an internal at my first appt. since then..nada..

and i keep hearing of this "stripping the cervix" stuff which freaks me out.

Re: so, I have a question about internals

I guess then mine did one at 11 weeks, when I complained of severe pain. Just to check if cervix is closed.

It didn't hurt.

The pap they did on me before that, put me to tears.

Re: so, I have a question about internals

I was wondering about this too - thanks for asking. I guess I've been getting internals every three weeks for my entire pregnancy since he's always up there checking my cervix. Good to know!

Re: so, I have a question about internals

I didn't start getting internals until 37-38 weeks. There were a few instances where the doctor had to check me out and she did an internal but for the most part they were later on. My internals were not painful at all, they were uncomfortable, but not painful.

Re: so, I have a question about internals

Mine hurt because I was having painful contractions as they were checking me.

it's different for everyone, but yes, I think what your OB is doing is considered and internal.

Re: so, I have a question about internals

The internal itself doesn't hurt. It hurts when they try to manually dialate your cervix or strip the membranes. Chat Icon

My internals didn't start until 36 weeks. They don't hurt but they are a little uncomfortable for me.
