So I read an interesting article about breastfeeding
and it said that in order to get milk, baby must get the WHOLE nipple in his mouth. Ummm OK so, unless I have a Canadian kid with a flip top head, I don't see this happening. Am I being to literal? Anyone with big nips successfully BF?

Re: So I read an interesting article about breastfeeding
I'm BFing #2 at the moment, and you'd be amazed how much they suck in LOL. But it doesn't have to be all of it -- I'm guessing the article wanted to make sure readers knew that it was more than just the part that sticks out, that the area around needs to go in too...

That is what I was going to say too. If you don't get enough in, you WILL be in pain (or at least that is what I've read/heard).
Don't forget to break suction before pulling Max off!!!

Yup, it's the whole nipple otherwise you are in pain and the baby is not getting the max. you'll be surprised.

Re: So I read an interesting article about breastfeeding
I have big nips and successfully BF'ed DS for 6 months exclusively. My whole nipple was never in his mouth. Of course it would never fit. The thing that is most important is making sure they have a proper latch on the nipple.

You don't need to get the whole areola in just the nipple (at least for DD this was true).

I had no clue. I thought it was just the nipple part that went in.
I hope Max has a large mouth!

Oh man, that sounds slightly intimidating. Especially since mine are becoming tractor trailer headlight status.

Re: So I read an interesting article about breastfeeding
by the end of my pregnancy i had nipples the size of dinner plates. jonah had no trouble latching on at all.
you'd be surprised at how much of it they can fit in their mouths... but they don't necessarily need ALL of it in there to get a good latch. it will be okay!

I have big nips and DD had no problem latching on. When the kid's gotta eat they figure out a way to make it work!!

Re: So I read an interesting article about breastfeeding
They have to get the whole nipple in or else it's an incorrect latch and it's painful. Reason being that the nipple has to be in the back of the throat so when dc ***** it is against the soft pallet. Otherwise the nip is towards the front of the mouth compressed by the hard pallet causing pain. You'll know what I'm talking about if you run your tongue along the roof of your mouth. You can feel the difference. You have to make sure your baby opens wide

honestly, it sounds WAY more complicated than it is. you just guide the baby to the boob and, more often than not, the baby will do the rest.
my baby was nursing at 10 minutes old, and i hadn't taken any BF classes or read anything substantial... he knew what to do, it's an instinct.
if you and your baby are having a hard time, there are lactation consultants out there who can guide you along, as well as plenty of experienced moms on the parenting board.

Oh you will be amazed at how much nipple you child can get in there mouth-lol My LC at my hospital was able to get Julia's whole mouth on my nipple, thats the only way they can get the milk out or it will hurt bad if they are latched on the wrong way!

You have to get most of the areola in the baby's mouth or it will hurt bad if shes just pulling on the nipple!

Re: So I read an interesting article about breastfeeding
I simply worried that if I do decide to breastfeed, I'll douse the lil one because of the piercing hole. Should I decide to do it, the ring comes out when I am ready to go.
