So if you're finding out the gender...has anyone else been told...
for your shower, don't let everyone know you're having a or ?
I see it as an advantage- makes everything more personalized.
But I've been told, you end up getting TONS of clothes that you probably won't use...and they may not be reusable depending on the next baby.
Thoughts?

Everyone pretty much knows. You tell one or two people and word gets around!!

Re: So if you're finding out the gender...has anyone else been told...
Honestly.. this was one of our deciding factors in deciding not to tell anyone the sex after we found out.
I went to a few showers right before my BFP and it was either ALL PINK or ALL BLUE stuff.
People didnt know at my shower, and I really didnt get a lot of clothes (I am happy about this). I basically got the entire carters nuetral 0-3 month line which will be fine for when the baby first comes home.
Im sure once he or she is born people will bring outfits to visit too etc.

We're NOT finding out BUT even if we did we wouldn't have told everyone till after the shower!! I've been to too many showers recently where the Mommy to be knew the sex and all she got was clothing! It was kinda upsetting to them because they'd have a ton of clothing (a lot of the wrong size for the wrong season) and they still had to go out and but everything!!!!
I can honestly say that I got EVERYTHING I need for this baby at my shower! I received maybe 5 outfits at my shower- how awesome is that?!

Well, honestly, a gift is a gift. Just because you have a shower doesn't mean people have to buy you "big ticket" items.
In my family, a lot of people buy clothes, people like buying baby clothes.
Everyone knew I was having a boy, I got most of my big ticket items at my (very small) shower and I got a lot of clothes. Clothes come in handy more than you realize as well.
IMO, I think it is silly not to tell til after the shower and I'd be annoyed that I bought green or yellow when the couple knew boy or girl. Oh, and as a mom of a boy, I didn't put him in much green or yellow, I think those clothes would go to waste in the long run.

I told everyone it's a boy and my mom wrote it on the invitation. I want boy clothes, if I don't use them or have a girl next, a couple of my friends are going to have babies within the next year or two so I give some to them or save it if I have another boy. I didn't want all green and yellow clothing, but that's just me.

Same here I didn't want everything neutral. I got everything on my registry and more - in my family people tend to buy a registry item and then add an outfit. If I have a girl next I'm sure we will get lots of girl items when she arrives and I know I will go crazy shopping anyway.

Re: So if you're finding out the gender...has anyone else been told...
If our baby was a girl i would have been VERY tempted to keep quiet prior to the shower.... baby would be the first in his family so they probably would go nuts with pink dresses....
our baby ended up being a boy which works out because they are getting him sports clothes which we would be having a girl wear too...

Re: So if you're finding out the gender...has anyone else been told...
Well everyone knew I was having a girl and for my shower I only got my bigger ticket items off of my registry and some pink receiving blankets. I only got about 3 outfits (and those people also gave something off of the registry).
Honestly I think if you put plenty of stuff on your registry of various price ranges and keep it full - so that people who shop later still have some choices I think you will get a mixture of things. Also keep in mind what is exciting or wanted by us might not be what someone wants to buy (bath tub, towels, diaper supplies etc) which is why it helps to have a variety of things on there to help people find something that they want to give.
Remember whether you tell people the gender or not there will always be people who will shop off the registry or will buy you clothes regardless. So I look at it this way - if they know what you are having at least you will get boy or girl clothing you might use versus some non gender specific items you might or might not use.

We aren't finding out and I don't think I would tell if I did b/c I wouldn't want a zillion different outfits for shower gifts. Any gift is nice of course but people buy plenty of clothes after the baby is born. People definitely tend to over do the clothes thing when they know the sex.

ITA. I knew before my shower and DH and I decided not to tell anyone. My best friend actually commented that I didn't receive that many clothes at my shower. I didn't really want any clothes. I already have a TON of them from my Mom and I did end up with about 12 outfits from my shower. I am fine with putting my little boy in green in the beginning :) and this way for our second we will already have the gender neutral wardrobe!
