Re: So I've Started the Ball Rolling..
I think there's just more gravity to an actual named diagnosis, and that is why it's filled with emotion for you. As a parent, we fear our children being labeled, even in the smallest sense of the word. Hang in there. This is probably the most difficult part...but, it sounds like you are a wonderful, courageous Mom who is doing the very best you can for your child. It's going to be okay.

I could NOT have said it better, you are a wonderful mommy for recognizing and doing something instead of ignoring it and hoping it goes away.

My son was recently diagnosed with PDD. We've been going through EI for a year and a half and he attends a special ed. preschool. Please FM if you'd like to talk.

Oh Summer... I'm so glad that you have gotten a diagnosis.
My brother is on something for his hyperactivity... I will ask my mom what it is.
He used to take Ritalin which caused him to NEVER eat.... with this med, he takes it, and is calm calm calm, but he still acts normal with regard to how he eats, and interacts with people if that makes any sense.
Even if you ask him - the ritalin made him feel zombie like.

Re: So I've Started the Ball Rolling..Updated
My daughter had her evaluation at the Cody Center. I was fortunate that I got the school to pay for it...it was extremely expensive and the school district tried to back peddle afterwards and not pay it!!!!!
Any way....even though we know that there is something wrong. Even though we know we are right..there is still that small part of us that is hoping we are wrong.
When I got Ariel's diagnosis I was in tears. I cried the whole way home. She was 9 at the time....already in self contained...I already had a diagnoses of Mosaic Down SYndrome...but it still was a lot to take.
Just while Im on the subject...and none of what Im about to say may pertain to him or your situation. But if push comes to shove go with the Autism classification on the IEP. The messed around with us and wanted to do Multiply Disabled. They dont want to classify them as Autistic b/c of the services or something...
AND I know you work in the area but there is a very good Special Ed Lawyer in Port Jefferson by the name of Nick Agro.
Again I know none of this may pertain to you at all. But I thought I should offer up this info any way just incase you might need it in the future...

Thanks Heather I actually am fortunate that I've never really had to push for services thus far, he gets soo many as it is and always has. His classification changes a lot though. It was Orthoped. Impaired (where they got that I have no idea..I guess the gross motor), then it was MD, then it was OHI and now it's back to MD for now. The doctor even said she isn't sure how the DX will "help" him in regards to getting more services at school since he gets a lot already, but it's good to pinpoint what the issue is.
I really hope down the road I won't need legal intervention, but I'll notebook this in case I do!

No reason to be sad. your son , and I know first hand, is an awesome amazing little boy, and has YOU to thank for that. He will thrive regardless of what he needs or what he "has" because of you and your families love , support and guidance!

You are clearly an amazing mom. Your son is an amazing little boy. I hope this gives you some closure of some kind....
And my school has worked with the Cody Center for certain students....they're excellent from what I've seen. Your son is in good hands!

He's an awesome kid and what a great mom you are to do what you knew was right, even though it was hard When it comes down to it, he will only be empowered by all the extra help he can get, he certainly won't be held back, so you are doing everything you can to secure a great future for your amazing little boy

Re: So I've Started the Ball Rolling..Updated
I know how you feel when you say you know what is in your heart and what you think but it is completley different when you hear it from someone.
I also tried to get my Nikolas to be seen by the Cody Center and I went through the same thing you went through.. I ened up getting him seen at Schneiders because it was too much money at cody center for out of pocket.
It's a tough thing for us mommies to have to go through but we do it because we want what is best for our children. You love Nicholas no matter what. Your an awesome mother!!!
If you need to talk I am always here. Believe me I know how hard it is. There have been many a nights that I lay in bed and cry because I don't know how to help my son with some of the problems that he has.. We just do the best we can and support and love them just like before..

Glad you got answers. My daughter is diagnosed with PDD. They told me they feel it is more Aspergers, but she is to young for a specific diagnosis. She's four years old. It doesn't change the love you have for your child. I don't look at my daughter as a label, it is just there to help get her services. You have a terrific attitude.

You're being an AMAZING mother for your son - the key here is intervention at an early age. I've seem truly remarkable things when done right, and at the right time. Kudos to you for doing what's best for your child

You're such a great mom, Summer! I think I mentioned Nassau Suffolk Autism Society when we went to the park, but here's the link. There's a chat board, but more importnantly, they sponsor a ton of free fun events for ASD families ...
