So my DD may have a peanut allergy, Questions (update)
and we saw firsthand last nite and experienced it. I think its mild and thank gosh, had some benadryl on hand and over.
Scariest sh it ever! Never had to take DD to ER so far in 2 yrs, (knocking on wood)...and I didnt want this to be the 1st.
Unfortunately It was my DH who didnt listen to me when eating nuts and thinking it was OK to give DD some, saying...We dont have allergies, she will be fine. So my yelling at him went in one ear and out the other....and HELLO, he wonders why I YELL.
Instantly, she got hives and then tells me, IM itching...and her eyes swelled up.
Just thankful all is ok...but IM aware of it now.
For BTDT moms, what is most that I need to steer away from?
Will she grow out of this?
ETA: Made an appt with an allergist and after reading some responses, I *think* it could be a walnut allergy, exactly what she ate last nite but I am not the doc. She has had peanuts in the past. We'll see.

Re: So my DD has a peanut allerg, Questions
Glad she's okay! My DS is allergic to nuts too so I know how scary it is. Are you taking her to an allergist? You should definitely get an epi-pen just in case.

Re: So my DD has a peanut allergy, Questions
check out FAAN There's some good resources there. My DS is allergic to dairy and eggs also and I find that nuts are the easiest of the 3 to avoid. One thing you might not think to check when eating out is if they fry in peanut oil.

Re: So my DD has a peanut allergy, Questions
one more thing...not to scare you, but the first reaction can be more mild than future reactions. my DS actually ate PB a few times before he showed any reaction at all so i thought we were in the clear. always, always carry benadryl where ever you go and like i mentioned before get an epi-pen. feel free to fm if i can help with anything else!

Re: So my DD has a peanut allergy, Questions
DS is allergic to nuts - mostly walnuts and a slight allergy to peanuts. We did not go to an allergist but our reg Ped sent us for testing and gave us a prescription for a liquid similar to benedryl and an epipen which should only be used for emergencies.
Be careful when going out for ice cream there is no cross-contamination - always ask for clean scooper. DS had a bad reaction after I took him for a plain vanilla cone w/ sprinkles after we did the blood work for his allergies as a treat. He immediately swelled up from it.

Re: So my DD has a peanut allergy, Questions
my son has a very servere peanut allergy. first thing i would find an allergist, who will give you a protocol and test to see which nut/peanuts there is an allergy to and how severe. some kids can outgrow the allergy...i know my son wont. you need to read every label. there are so many products that contain, may contain or are processed ina factory that contains.....there are also a few websites where you can order allergy free treats.

Re: So my DD has a peanut allergy, Questions
DS will be 7 months. He was found to be allergic to milk protein so my ped sent him to the allegist at Schnieder's for follow up. They did testing that showed he has a peanut allergy. They don't know how severe yet but gave me a prescription for an epi-pen just in case. I have also read that the first few times tend to be mild reactions and then it can get horribly scary if you aren't prepared.
I highly recommmend all new moms if your child has a milk allergy, ask to follow up with the specialist so you can find out early on if there's anything else you need to be concerned about.
BTW, I recently had someone making fun of my son, saying "you never heard of this $hit when we were kids. Just roll him in peanut butter now and he'll get over it. It was really hard for me to keep my composure. She's a teacher too and was making fun of the kids in her building who have these kinds of issues because she feels the "school is taking too many precautions".

Terrible
If anything, I feel bad for the kids...I know how they have to be singled out, because of their allergy. ex; Seperate table at school, some taken out of classes and esp thing they cant eat.
Its so severe as well, and the schools have to take precautions because of how severe it is.

OH Deb, so scary! It does sound like tree nuts--be careful b/c it is in so many things (had a little boy in my class allergic to tree nuts); read labels carefully.

Re: So my DD may have a peanut allergy, Questions (update)
Nut allergies su ck.. that's what I'm going through right now. Took Kristina to the allergist and now have to carry epi pens with me, and he also gave me dissolvable allergy pills for me to carry with also. I'm a medicine box when I walk out of this house for her. I carry Benadryl for her, now the dissolvable tablets, as well as the epi pen. She's got severe nut and seed allergies SO FAR, and is allergic to other things as well.
If you carry those ready dose children's benadryl dispensers it will be so easy for you. I believe that they are 5 or 6 mL ready to go.
Her allergist told me that the epi pen is for SEVERE allergic reaction. To give her the benadryl and/or the dissolvable tablets first if the reaction is mild, but if I see anything worse, then epi pen, and RUSH her to the ER.

And that is just disgusting. Children die from these allergies...it's nothing to joke about. I probably would have choked her and asked her if she thought losing the ablility to breathe was funny.....

That is terrible. Most people do not realize just how dangerous an allergy can be.
To the OP, DD had a terrible reaction to peanut butter, so I know what you are going through! Good Luck!
