So the swine flu has made its way to Alex's school/class
And it's remarkably underwhelming A few kids in her class have/had it, and all of them had very mild symptoms, and were better within a day or two. Truth is, I think we all had it about 2 weeks ago when Alex came home sick one day. She recovered within 24 hours, then Yael got it, recovered within 24 hours, and then I got it, and it took a little longer to kick.
Just wanted to post this for all the worried mommies that, god forbid, it does make its way into your home, from what I'm seeing, it's not as disconcerting as I've been lead to believe. Now, of course, there are a few kids with asthma at her school, and their parents have kept them out of school, which I completely understand and would do the same. But for all the other children, it seems to be passing without much thunder and lightning...

ITA with you!
We've had 3 swine flu cases in my office already. None were major.
One of my coworkers' DC's whole nursery school class basically had it.
Her pediatrician said "they were the healthiest bunch of sick kids" he's ever seen.

Um...nice that you think this is what you had and it was mild.
My niece had swine flu - DIAGNOSED swine flu - and it was NOT mild.
My friend's niece is in hospital in England holding on for dear life.

No need to flame - I'm just putting out there what's going on in our turf. While I dont know for certain what went around our house, I do know for certain that 3 kids in Alex's class have DIAGNOSED swine flu, and are just fine.

I know a few people, adults and children, with diagnosed Swineflu (they do a nasal swab)
Bounced back from it in about 5 days.
Some bodies will be able to attack the virus better than others, thats why some bounce back faster than others...
Same as the regular flu... some tolerate it better than others....

I don't believe I was flaming. Sorry if it came off that way. But I see a lot of trivializing a matter that has affected me personally in a very real sense.
My niece is 25, healthy as a horse. She got it in the spring (when it is supposed to be mild) and was very, very sick.
I am trying to get my DD vaccinated and my Dr. won't have it in until next week, which is disappointing to me.
Everyone should do what they feel comfortable with - don't get it if you don't want to, but for those of us who do, it's not such a simple matter.

and NO WHERE did i see her mention the vaccine

Re: So the swine flu has made its way to Alex's school/class
I have to say the adults I have spoken to who have gotten it (diagnosed w/ the test) and their kids who got it said they thought they were dying and never felt sicker. They don't have pre-existing conditions luckily and they felt it was pretty serious. I will say if you are only sick for 24 hours (the flu generally lasts 7-10 days with the worst 3-5 days in length) it probably isn't the flu but another virus. So while some people I am reading about on here have had it mild the people I'm speaking w/ IRL aren't having the same experience.

Re: So the swine flu has made its way to Alex's school/class
It's in my kids' daycare also. Hasen't hit the younger classes, but the 3's and 4's classes were hit hard. Our experience was similar to Beth's, the kids are out for 3-4 days, sometimes only 2, and than they are fine. 3 teachers in the school have had it also, and they were all back after 3 days at home. These were diagnosed cases of h1n1. I think every person's body will react differently- some people will be sick for 2 days, some for 2 weeks.

Re: So the swine flu has made its way to Alex's school/class
I spoke to my ped. about it and he has had a ton of cases and none were very serious...for the most part he said gone in 3-5 days.
I think the key is getting to the dr within 24-48 hours of symptoms arising to get tamiflu and antibiotics. Alot of people dont go to the dr until they have been sick 3 or 4 days and unfortunately, yes that is how they become sick as a dog.

If this is true, its very reassuring to hear. I only hope it remains mild for most.

I think this is the crux of the issue with confirmed cases. Some people are fine, as if it was the regular lu, but others....not so much.

I agree. If nothing else, the attention the swine flu has caused has forced people to take their 'little sick' stuff much more seriously, which is good.
They get treated faster They feel better faster They aren't passing it on for days while they try 'work through it' Serious complications are found earlier
