Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class
I would think that you have already been exposed. I think it is more dangerous for those in their third trimester because of the decreased lung capacity.
I would call your OB anyway to let them know you have been exposed and see what they recommend.

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class
One of my students came down with the Swine Flu last night, I left work immeadiately and called my doctor. I spoke to the nurse, but the doctor hasn't called me back yet. I feel fine so far, I'm just worried because I'm 30 weeks. Why couldn't the season start after I gave birth

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class
I left work on Tues when there was a case in my class. I was able to get the vaccine yesterday and am going to let the antibodies build then return on Monday. You have to do whatever you are comfortable with and if you need to take a few days, do so. Nothing is more important than your health and your baby's health. It's so scary

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class
i would... 1. call my OB 2. Call my union. Are you in LI or NYC? I heard teachers in LI that are pregnant are being excused from work if there is a case of swine flu.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but if you're excused from work, do you have to use up your sick days, or are you just excused?
I'm a teacher too, and there's swine flu in a NUMBER of classrooms in my school, including the sister of a boy in my class.
I just don't think it would be fair to make you use up sick days because I'd RATHER be in school and saving my days for when they baby is born, and it's not my fault that the kids have this freakishly contagious illness!!

Let me know what happens, Kar. If I were you, I wouldn't go in tomorrow if you don't hear back from your OB tonight. Better to be safe than sorry! Keep me posted.

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class
I would march into the principals office and tell him/her right away. I would demand that the custodians pay extra special attention to your room when they clean IE: lysol the desks etc. Make sue you keep the windows open and have PLENTY of purell on hand.
I would also speak to the nurses

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class
The guy I sit next to at work had swine flu when I was 9 weeks pregnant. I stayed home for a few days, but really I had already been exposed. I wasn't all that worried about catching it, I spoke to my GP and the swine flu hotline. I was fine. I am not too worried about catching it really. But keep your hands clean etc....

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class
UPDATE: my OB called back and said that i can take the tamiflu (prescription) if i feel nervous. she called it in for me and i'm going to get it but i dont think i will take it. she did not say to take off, etc...
the office still does not have the swine flu shot. i'm still undecided if i would even get it.
i spoke to the nurses at school but they just found out today that it really was swine flu. his mom is saying what he has now (3 days later) the doc said is a virus.
my hesitation in telling the principal is that i'm only 11w and wanted to wait until next week after i heard the heartbeat again at my 12w appt.
so far no other flu/swine flu cases in that class or my other classes. this would be the first case in the distric this year.

well my friend just started working in LI and she was telling me this was the policyin her district. I work in NYC and last June, while I was preggo I had about 30 kids absent per day from my class for almost 2 weeks, plus the kids who were coming in with fevers and their parents refused to pick them up. The school never closed, i ended up getting it and i had to take 5 days off, which came out of my bank. So now bc some stupid people sent their kids to school sick, its 5 days less that I have for maternity leave

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class-UPDATE at bottom
I'm a second grade teacher and I was told that a child in my room test positive too. I called my dr and she prescribed tamiflu. I started taking it yesterday then got freaked out that it's category C for pregnant women. My dr. told me to get the H1N1 shot, but I can't find it w/o mercury anywhere. She said taking it with mercury is like eating a tuna fish sandwich.-little risk. I'm just scared. Anyone know where you can can the mercury free H1N1 shot?

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class-UPDATE at bottom
I had to take Tamiflu because I had flu/swine flu a few weeks ago and missed 5 days of school! Yes, Tamifllu is category C and I initially freaked too and didn't want to take it. My OB told me that there are plenty of Category C drugs prescribed to pregnant women. She said the risks of having the flu untreated for a pregnant woman are far worse than the potential risks of Tamiflu. Also, unless you begin Tamiflu within 48 hours of feeling symptoms, it does not work. If you haven't gotten any symptoms of the flu but just feel you have been exposed - you can take the Tamiflu preventively, which is to take 1 a day for 10 days vs 2x a day for 5 days if you already feel sick/have the flu.

Re: WWYD...swine flu in my class-UPDATE at bottom
Thanks! You made me feel less anxious. I am taking it as a precaution. So, one a day for ten days. Did you get the n1h1 shot? If so, where did you get it from?
