Re: So very sick of the grind.
I actually really like living here for the most part but I think you need to have a good amount of money to live here comfortably without experiencing the negatives of it. I love the proximity to the beach, the city, sports arenas, museums, and the mountains. I typically don't mind the seasons even thou I love warm weather and love spending time at the beach. I am afraid if I had access to it all year long it would get old….
However, part of me does want to cash out all the equity we have in our house and move down south so my husband has a better quality of life and we have more family time together. But part of me thinks that he's not even cut out for a regular 9-5 type job. I do think you can find good schools in much cheaper areas, and frankly I think so much more depends on you as a parent than the schools that you send your children too - as long as they aren't TERRIBLE.

And tell me who out there isn't proud to say that they live in NY when meeting people from any other place in the country.. right?
Sometimes I'm embarrassed to tell people I am from NY. They look at us as rude, pushy, you name it. And I know that isn't true- (at least not for EVERYONE!) but we have some bad stereotypes. I work with people all over the country in my job and a lot of them don't even want to work with us because we are those "new yorkers"
really? ha, i see that as jealousy

So very sick of the grind.
I constantly hear how great schools are in NY and that's why people won't move. I think it's an excuse. You can find great schools in every state. We moved to FL over 10 years ago and were never planning on moving back but were forced to when my mom got sick very quickly and passed away shortly after. I needed to be back with friends and family but in reality I just didn't know how to handle my grief and went into a shell. Now that I have kids we are moving back to a different part of FL early next year. Great schools, great community and we both have friends and family in other parts of the state. We are DONE with ny. Dh's salary is very comparable and COL is much cheaper. I'm counting the days I can't wait to go.

Same. Ha! I embrace the stereotypes. My tombstone will probably be inscribed with "she died how she lived: with her middle finger up at everything"

There's many responses to this..
The OP's original posting seems to be more about her work/life balance as well as where she's living and maybe its time for a real change in order for her to achieve happiness. Changing just one of those things may have a positive influence on how you think about the other. For example, changing jobs may give you more time to enjoy your home life and appreciate the simpler things. Or, changing where you live could shorten your commute and help you hate your job less. Not saying this is the answer to her problem at all, just saying there are many ways to look at situations.
To answer all the other posts about the grind and cost of living, overall life in NY/LI.. well, the grass isn't always greener. These same complaints are found in every other state in the country! So many things that we take for granted here are just not found in other locations and i think we often lose sight of how lucky we are to live in such a great diverse place.
Yes, you can chose to move to another place and live an idyllic life by a lake, but in doing so you'll give up so many of the other benefits you have by living in this area.
Yes, the traffic here sucks, yes there are too many people, yes we have a high cost of living..
But you know what? I wouldn't trade it for living in FL or NC or TX or anywhere else that people are moving to. I would not fit in in any of those places. I love the hustle and bustle of the city, i love the millions of choices we have for practically anything we want to do, buy or eat. I love the beaches, i love the change in seasons, i love the proximity to nature as well as the city, i love that i'm surrounded by people of many different races, ethnicities, religions and backgrounds.
I'd die of boredom in FL, i've been.. i know!
And tell me who out there isn't proud to say that they live in NY when meeting people from any other place in the country.. right?
It's easy to think we have it so bad here, but if you really think about it, its pretty damn sweet.
Again, this is such a LI "centric" way of thinking. Everyone from here thinks we live in the best place ever, that no other place can compare in terms of shopping, culture, eating, etc and it's really just not true. Sure, LI has some nice things, some definite pros and cons but there is a great big country out there and to think we live in the BEST place there is seems silly to me. MANY other places have a fantastic way of life too as well as access to wonderful shopping, eating, and culture.
It comes down to this, it's not really a matter of thinking the grass will be greener because NO place is perfect. It really is just about recognizing that you can make a good, happy life for yourself outside of this tiny island and maybe, just maybe, that other place might actually be better than here.

Op here. It is a combination of everything for me. I have lived on Long Island always. I do not like my job, it is stressful, my commute is stressful, home life is exhausting. But its not just those things, because those can be anywhere. It's also rude NY people, crazy drivers, dirty trash everywhere, graffiti, etc. I'm tired of working a million hours to live in a neighborhood I don't love and can barely afford. For a little plot of land where I can wave to the guy next door, lol.
Yesterday I was on my way home from work. I was not far from home and I was just looking at the side of the road. It was riddled with trash, even on the LIE. Closer to home, someone dumped a dirty broken MICROWAVE on the side of the road. Who does that?? On my way to work this morning I turned a corner to see new graffiti sprawled all over a building that is recently unoccupied. When I travel out of state, I never see this kind of thing. Obviously I don't travel to the hood or anything.
In a few years, I won't have to worry about school districts and what not. I am ready for a new adventure I think. I think quiet and slow pace may be good for my state of mind. Maybe I'll end up back here, who knows. I'm tired and maybe menopausal.

Re: So very sick of the grind.
I was thinking about this recently. We are looking for a house and even though we have a fairly large budget, it's just not going to get what I want. I'm not even sure what area of LI I want to look anymore.

So very sick of the grind.
We moved off LI years ago for all the reasons mentioned to S. FL. We have never looked back. We make decent salaries, have a beautiful home, enjoy just overall enjoyable lifestyle. It's clean, new, and the weather cannot be beat. When the PP's mention people are bored moving here, what are you looking for? Aside from Manhattan, what is there to miss? We have amazing beaches, good restaurants, shopping, parks, awesome weekend getaways close by. I'd be doing the same kind of thing in NY that I do here in FL. Work, spend time with DH/DD, hang with friends, BBQ, drink, exercise, kids sports, adult leagues/sports, etc etc, just live life. unless you're moving to some country bumpkin area, there's just as much to do here as anywhere. That will hold true if you live in any suburb outside a large city.

And jealous of what? Just because we happen to have been born in NY due to happenstance I don't see how that makes us superior to anyone else. Proud of what? The fact that we happened to have been born in NY instead of Florida?

So very sick of the grind.
A LI bashing post? Week made!
First, let's get one thing very clear here. NY as in the city and LI are two very separate entities. I've heard people on LI say they want to secede from NY. By all means, please do. No one wants you. You're literally NY's d!ck.
The grind is the grind. If you work outside the home, it exists no matter were you live. You may get hit with less traffic and your house may be cheaper (and worth less) but you're still showing up to work every day. You can't blame LI for the grind.
Moving for us is a no brainer, but we're considering going back to the city, so grindier and more expensive. But for us, worth it. You couldn't pay us any amount of money to stay here. We only came here because it was cheaper than Westchester. Obviously, you get what you pay for. We're leaving before DD starts kindergarten. Everyone may think the schools are great, but when I meet the parents of the kids she would go to school with I want to vomit. Narrow-minded, entitled, anti-progressive, uneducated people. That's not what I want her around, what I want her to think of as "normal." It's not normal. It's repulsive.
Also, no one is jealous of living on LI. DH still still tells people he's from Westchester because he's mortified. I correct anyone who refers to me as a LIer. And you know what? Only a LIer would think people would be jealous of them. Thank you for proving my point.

Yep! I can't even stomach the thought of going to my DD's school for anything. Those women...good Lord! No thanks I would rather have a root canal than go to a PTA meeting around here. (Shudder)

I think everyone should think that the place they live is the best - the best place for them. I don't necessarily think that it's Long Island related. I feel bad for anyone that is living in a place that they don't love. I personally do love living here and don't have any desire to move right now. If I stop loving it because of whatever reason I would want to move to someplace that I thought was the best place for me at that time. But, FOR ME - I love the proximity to great beaches and mountains, the proximity to NYC, I love my town, I love the change of seasons, the schools etc. I have looked long and hard and haven't found something that I think would be better for me and my family. But I can see why Long Island wouldn't be for everyone. I think you need to have a decent amount of money to be happy here and if I find myself in a less desirable financial situation I would certainly give up the proximity to some of the things that I love to have a better quality of life for myself, my husband and my children. You don't like Long Island and you are choosing to leave but there are definitely a lot of people who live here by choice and really do love it.

I'm starting to think about retirement. DH is retired and it is so tempting to join him. Just can't deal with the commuting and the constant traffic anymore, been commuting into the city daily since 1980. I stopped taking the express bus because the travel time was insane - I live in Bayside near the water and it was taking me 2 hours to get home every day, 1-1/2 hours to get in. So I started taking the LIRR and now it's constant delays and problems, and more expensive.
I don't care about my job, it's just a paycheck, but the benefits are too good to leave. I'll just suck it up until I've had enough and retire.
I also can't stand the crime / filth / homelessness I see every day. It's so freaking depressing. Cost of living is so expensive.
We are thinking about retiring to SC. That's as far south as I want to go. My only concern is the health care system, is it as good as we have in NY.
similar story except dh has 5 years to go and we're out. FL here we come.
We are equally concerned about the health care system, as we both have (and had, some are now deceased) family down there and they ALL had nothing but problems with the healthcare. I think we are very spoiled in NY.
There are people who live down south who take "medical vacations" to come up for their physicals, dental, etc...I can totally see us doing that.
We are absolutely done with NYC and NYS. If this dumba$$ mayor gets reelected we may try to figure out how to get out sooner

Whoa, harsh, and I don't even live on LI
But I agree with a few of your points. Having lived out of state for several years now, I kind of chuckle at what a bubble LI really is. Even though I went out of state for college and law school, I never realized it until I officially moved away from LI.

Re: So very sick of the grind.
Yes, I am sick of the grind, but it has nothing to do with NY. I have a VERY demanding and stressful career. We are considering a move, but are not able to move just yet. I would most likely take a 6 figure reduction in another state as I no longer want to work under such stress. I am also very concerned about the schools in other states.

Yes, I agree. You should love where you live and I don't hate LI (I did grow up here) but there are things that frustrate me about being here. That aside, my point was that LI'ers, in general, seem to think that ANY place outside of LI is worthless garbage. They have the mentality that LI is the mecca of ALL things great, which is fine, everyone is entitled to feel how they want but it simply isn't true. Other nice places with just as many good things exist outside of this tiny island. There are other fantastic schools in this country, other great places to eat and shop, nice weather (depending what you're looking for) and a host of other things that would make one's life happy.

Re: So very sick of the grind.
It's hard here. I commute into the city and it's six trains a day just to get into midtown (LIRR round trip and two subways round trip) and an hr and a half each way on a good day. I'm tired by the time I actually get to work. Add the crowds, which I absolutely hate, and it's an exhausting work day.
It's expensive to live here but it is what it is. I have a good job with great benefits and a really flexible schedule. I'm hoping in time that we will be able to buy a vacation place somewhere and be able to get away here and there. I think that will make a big difference in the daily grind.

I liked the island when I first moved here, but it's now wearing thin... it's gotten to the point where I don't even bother trying to make friends anymore bc I can't stand most people here and am very ready to leave. I'm a sahm so I can up and leave any time. My parents are retired and ready to follow us wherever the wind takes us... my dh just started a new job which will allow him to work from home. Once he gets his accounts established, we are gone... we figure in a year from now. We didn't care for the areas we looked at in SC, so later this year we're going to check out NC. I think we'll all be much happier once off this island.
I can't stand most people here either but I thought it was just me being a b!tch. Glad it's not just me! LOL
Everyone is rude and rushing around. You don't realize how NICE people are until you leave the island and go somewhere else. People are actually friendly and engage you in conversation. We were in Boston recently and everywhere we went people were chatty, helpful, and friendly. It was refreshing.
I lived in Boston for years as an adult and outside Boston as a child. Believe me the people are JUST as rude as those here in NY.
