So very sick of the grind.
I hate LI with a blinding passion. But we wouldn't want to move out of state, we would want to go back to the city. DH & I were both born & raised in Queens. We are dying to go back to the Bayside/Whitestone/Auburndale area. Right now we are the first town in Nassau County, we can be at the Queens border in 4 minutes if we don't hit lights. IMO, it's too far from Queens. I find many of the schools here to be terribly overrated. Also, if ONE more person looks at me with disgust when I tell them we are from Queens, both of our families are still in Queens, and our goal is to go back to Queens, I am going to strangle someone. I had a mother at my DS's school tell me she doesn't like going to far into Queens because of the high crime and how it's not "visually appealing". Right...because a town with Hempstead Tnpke, and all of it's car dealerships and fast food restaurants, is visually appealing. LI is crime ridden too. You don't live in rural WI- although, yep, you would find crime there too. UGH, I can't!!

So very sick of the grind.
My cousin and his family have lived in several different states due to his job. He and his wife are originally from here, but they have lived in NJ, MD, TN, NC (2 different parts), and now OH. So I live vicariously through him and his family. He says if he could live anywhere permanently out of all the places he's lived, he would go back to TN in a heartbeat. But it's also very religious (as in, where do you go to church was the second question people asked after what's your name). He and his wife rave about OH schools. Their daughter is gifted and there are many opportunities for her there.
We just bought our first home here, so we're staying put for awhile. I'm ok with it. It's home.

I have the same love for these areas in queens. We moved to LI 2years ago only because we could not afford a house in queens. I was actually embarrassed to say I lived on LI the first year we lived here because I didn't want to be perceived a certain way. While I do like the area I now live in, I am concerned with my kids turning into snobs & becoming sheltered with no common sense. I hate how people in LI drive. They feel they always have the right of way, never signaling, etc. The high taxes lining the pockets of Town officials- it just infuriates me. I live right over the queens border & a mom at my son's school just told me how her husband will go into work a little later for half the summer since she hates the thought of taking her daughter to camp in fresh meadows because of the parallel parking & congestion. Really?

Are the kids not snotty on the wealthiest parts of queens? I think like everywhere, there are different parts of LI with different values. I'm sure it seems silly to people that grew up in queens, but I avoid going places where the parking is a disaster. I don't need the extra stress of driving in circles looking for a spot or being stuck behind some jerk who is double parked. To each his own.

Not in my experience. I went to school with kids who lived in million dollar homes 20-25 years ago while I was living in one my parents paid 200k for. You would never know the difference because no one had expensive "possessions" that they showed off and everyone took pubic transportation so there was no feeling of competition regarding cars. I'm sure it's different now but no one ever made me feel like I had less. I was obviously aware when I entered their home but kids didn't really show off & parents didn't either. Here, I have my son coming home telling me his classmate was given $100 from the tooth fairy. lol It's also just different times.

There's a difference between wanting to avoid traffic and making your husband late to work every day because you don't want to drive your kid to camp. I'm surprised this person even allows their kid on the mean streets of Fresh Meadows.
I don't remember any particularly snotty kids growing up. I mean yeah, some kids were little asshats. For sure. But what strikes me is how sheltered kids on LI are. I have coworkers who won't allow their high schoolers on the LIRR. They'll go away to college next year but can't take a commuter train.

My close friend lives in Whitestone. I assure you it isn't how it was 20-25 years ago. She complains about it constantly. They also get $100 from the tooth fairy and are show offs and snobs. We live in a show off, Instagram world. It's the same in queens as LI. Edited to say she has a communion this weekend for a child in her DC's class. They are having over 300 people! For a 7 year old.

There are snotty kids everywhere and asshole parents everywhere. It doesn't even have to be a nice neighborhood. My sister lives in a very poor section on Manhattan and there are plenty of snotty kids and asshole parents. It's society today not the area you live in.

Just curious - those of you that want to go back to Queens - what's stopping you? I assume you moved out to Long Island for a bigger house and more property?

That's exactly why we moved. We realize now that the property (our house isn't that big) isn't worth it for us. For lots of people it is and that's great. But not for us.
We put a lot of $$$ into our house. Obviously houses are more expensive in Queens so we need to wait until we've built up enough savings to make the move. We'll make a profit when we sell, but we'd be buying a house for twice what we'd sell ours for.
I also work on LI so I need to find another job before we move.

Re: So very sick of the grind.
Actually, no i'm not a born and bred NY'er and most certainly not a LI'er - i was born in England and lived in MA for most of my life until moving to NY area 20 years ago. I only have lived on LI for the last 12 years.
So trust me when i say i've had experience living in other places (UK, MA, NJ, Brooklyn) and i'm WELL traveled to other parts of the country.
I think my life experience and travels have given me a pretty good perspective on what else is out there to say that for ME - i love NY and i think its pretty damn sweet place to live. Yea, it has its faults, but I tell people where i'm from (now) with pride.. not with shame.
Only other place i'd move back to is MA (where i know you're considering going to) and trust me, Boston folks have the same sense of diehard love it or leave it mentality as NY'ers do!
