So, went for my follow up OBGYN appt - a little nervous, although I shouldnt be....
I had a breast reduction, as i mentioned before, when I was 20, so theres a lot of scar tissue. I told her I'm going to be 34 in November, and since so many women in my family have had breast cancer, would like to get a head start on mammograms - before I'm 35.
She thought it was a good idea, and examined me for lumps. She agreed that scar tissue makes it hard to tell whats going on, but did find something near the scar line that I have felt in the past. She told me she'd like to check it out. She begged me not to lose sleep over it, that it is most likely nothing, but a lump always will make a woman with my history (and on long island) a bit nervous.
So, I scehduled my mammogram and ultrasound, as well as an appointment with a surgeon (as per her recomendation) for the end of this montha nd early November.
So, its on my mind. Not blaring, but in the back of my mind as a small concern.
So, any good thoughts you can send my way would be appreciated. I have so many other things in the immediate to-do list now to distract me, but its amazing how they lose priority when theres a bigger worry lying underneath it all.
I'm sure I'll get a little more nervous when I get closer to the doctor appoinments, so I may post from time to time about it. Bear with me. You ladies have been so supportive for so many things, its only natural I'll turn to you guys for this as well.

Re: So, went for my follow up OBGYN appt - a little nervous, although I shouldnt be....
Just a thought - does the place you are going to for the mammo and sono do biopsies too? I went to Good Sam Breast Center & when they noticed something on my mammo, they called me back for the sono and once they did the sono - right then & there they told me that they recommend a fine needle biopsy to check things out (a very easy procedure) & the radiologist came right in and did the biopsy & they have you wait for the results (about 20 minutes or so - they send them across the street to the hospital). When you mentioned you made an appt with a surgeon, I was wondering because I had done that prior to using Good Ssam & the surgeon (a well respected one from Stony Brook) told me after I had the mammo & sono that he couldn't do a fine needle biopsy on a solid mass & I ended up having a "core" biopsy which is very invasive, painful & left a scar. Turns out - it wasn't necessary - the radiologist & the pathologists at Good Sam have the ability and technology to biopsy and analyze very small samples even from solid masses. Turns out everything is benign, however, it was a scary ordeal. Just wanted to share so you have the chance to get as much info as you can.

Re: So, went for my follow up OBGYN appt - a little nervous, although I shouldnt be....
i just went thru something sort of similar. my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at 42 and passed away from the disease at 47. i have been going for mammos and sonos since i was 30. im 32 now. on my last mammo they found something they believed to be a fibroid. a sono confirmed that. but because of my history, i went to see a breast surgeon who ordered a breast mri. that mri showed 3 suspiciious spots. i had a biopsy on all three spots and they were benign!! my point is. heck yeah its scary!!! it will always be scary. but do all the mammo and sonos and everything you can. im sure you have nothing to worry about. i really am. but early detection is the best bet. and no matter how stressful or nerve wracking it is, we have to do it. for ouselves and our family.

The whole mammography deal is so scary. I went for my first the beginning of this year and they wanted me back in 6 months to check some calicifications. I went back and they kept calling me back in for more magnified views. Now they want me back for a sonogram because I have "dense tissue". In the meantime they keep telling me this is all precautionary and everything seems fine, but it is so unsettling.
Good luck - you are doing the right thing by going early!

There had been studies in the past that have found "clusters" of women with breast cancer in areas of Long Island. I believe some of it correlated with their Jewish ancestry, which for some reason have higher incidences of breast cancer. According to the study, Nassau County has/had a very high Jewish population, so the finding showed a high rate of breast cancer.

Ugh, that's stressful. But, if she didn't seem overly concerned, I would TRY not to worry too much until you know there is something to worry about.
