So who else is suddenly homeschooling right now??
we live in NJ... and my kids school is closed until at least March 30... probably longer so were all suddenly pushed into doing school at home with our kids. luckily the teachers have been amazing-- and they are using Google Classroom to post work, videos, etc so its basically just following what the teacher puts up there.... but i'm already over it :-/ I think for me, the worst part is not being able to really go anywhere with them once the work is done. Most playgrounds are closed, a lot of walking paths are closed, they're "Bored" of riding/ walking around just our neighborhood, they can't really have playdates with friends... for 2 active boys, its ROUGH!!!! Just figured we could all vent here a little bit if anybody is in the same boat! I know its for a good reason... but, MAN!!!!!

Re: So who else is suddenly homeschooling right now??
We have no classwork or homework for these 2 weeks. They are using snow and vacation days for now . To be honest I can not teach her anything. I am not a teacher and I don't remember 4th grade math especially this new way they want it taught. Plus I work full time so.... If they do like you said and just post videos to follow that's fine. But "homeschooling " by me is not going to happen .

We are in NJ too. School closed Monday, which they used as a snow day and started yesterday. We're on day 2 now. My 5th and 3rd grader has classwork on google classroom. They both have chromebooks and their headsets so it's going well so far (knock on wood). Teachers are doing great though. They are putting up the assignments around 9AM each day and give 3 hours of work to the students. They teachers are online from 9 - 1 so this way if they have any questions they can get them through google. Honestly, it's better than I thought and they do have the option to call a friend to work together.

I printed out a ton worksheets for my DD to do based on what she told she’s been learning in school. So that has kept her busy; she was so excited to work on stuff. It certainly did not take up our whole day. Today her teacher posted work, so we’re going to do that in addition to the other items i have on her schedule. I even found a “school bell” sound effect on google yesterday and rang it when “school” was starting. She loved it!

Can you set up FaceTime, google hangouts, or Skype with their friends? My kids are using those for virtual play dates while they play videogames on line with their friends in their homes.

I guess that's the benefit of being divorced - I'll get a break every other week when my son is with his dad. But I had him Monday and Tuesday and we're sticking to the COVID-19 schedule that's all over FB - mixing school work with non-screen time. We were with my boyfriend during the time, and he has 4 kids - so my son just got swept up into their schedule. Makes it easier when there are other kids around. Not sure how he's going to handle it when he's by himself, but I'm working so I can't entertain him all day.

My district is starting next week---yeah i am working at home full time for this so I have no idea how I'm gonna do this. There were some districts that i read that were moving their spring break up, and I wonder why my district isn't doing it??? IF they go back (and that is an IF) on April 2nd, then why on earth would they be home again for another week starting on the 6th? Makes no sense to me-they should've just moved he break and be done with it. Things are going to be interesting around here!

The schools don't want people to panic. It's easier to say 2 weeks to parents than kiss school goodbye for the year.

All I know is if school is canceled for the rest of the year I want my money back.
This is torture. And if one more person tells me to "enjoy the time with my daughter" I'm going to scream expletives at them.

Yeah - my bf keeps posting stuff like that. He has them on a relatively strict schedule of academics and down time, but he has 4 kids (ages 5-12) and it's easier to have that many on a schedule instead of roaming free. But he's posting videos of them in the bounce house (he has a big living room), them riding bikes, roller blading, making bread, baking cakes, and doing their school work. It's exhausting looking at the photos b/c there's no way I have the energy to do all that with my son and I have to work so I can't do all those things.

ITA. Does everyone assume everyone is home and just doing nothing all day? If I get to stay home I will have to work, not just sit around singing kumbaya with my family. Families who are starting off strong will be the ones killing each other soon as they don't usually spend that much time together.

I can't even tell you how busy work has been today. I just had to stop for a mental break and bowl of cheetos and came on here to clear my head for a bit.
I had a call where I was sharing my screen and my emails kept popping up over the shared content to the point where i had to shut down my email. I turned it back on 50 minutes later and I had 55 emails. That's more than an email a freaking minute. I dont' know where the hell my DD is- she is probably inside in an ipad coma.
But yeah, slow down. Rest. Revive. Do educational worksheets Take virtual museum tours. Downward dog.
I'd love to know how. I'd love to be able to breath.

I'm fortunate that I don't work, but I would be really pissed if I had to work from home AND homeschool my child. My sister is having to do that, as her kids are young, and need guidance. I'm lucky that mine is in 7th and everything is on Google Classroom. And I just ask what she has, has she done it. It's been A LOT of work though!

Re: So who else is suddenly homeschooling right now??
we're supposedly starting remote schooling Monday. Don't have any details form the school yet. once I heard that the teachers have no clue how it's going to work, I gave up on homeschooling this week and am treating it as a vacation.
DH is working form home. He is using our only computer so I hope an Ipad is enough for DS next week. I am unemployed so will be here to help DS but am hoping I don't have to so I can use that time to clean and cook. I've spent the week entertaining my DS so DH can work. I'm exhausted.
I really don't see the point of remote learning. My kid goes to a traditional school for a reason. I don't care about the grades or the days needed or the union contract. You can't teach in school call it done at the end of second semester and let's wait until September to start again. Making parents teach at home just so you can say you did something is not what school is about.

Re: So who else is suddenly homeschooling right now??
I WFH PT so I am luckyish with this but I have found the homeschooling keeps my kids busy. Also I am taking the opportunity to do things I normally don’t do like cook! And showing my kids how to cook. But this will get old in another week and I will be pulling my hair out. I already snapped once today. I find taking an hour long walk in the late afternoon by myself is helping me keep my sh*t together!

i can see this happening. our school told us we would be out for 2 weeks... but i know thats gonna change. our spring break is supposed to be 4/12 to 4/19- so i know they'll at least be out until then. But then i have a feeling, like you said, why continue with the remote learning, and asking the parents to "guide" the kids at home.... if the kids aren't learning the right way anyway?? they're going to have to reteach all of that stuff in the beginning of next school year anyway- so why stress the teachers and parents out more with the remote learning stuff?? just finish this 3rd marking period and call it a year. Then parents will be really screwed because the remote learning is at least filling up a couple hours of the kid's day right now. so if they call it a year and the teachers stop sending remote learning stuff... the kids are going to be even more out of it. this whole thing is sending my depression and anxiety through the roof!!!

i'd rather have a kid i need to entertain than remote learning deadlines. we got our logins thursday. "school" starts monday we already have assignments due. i think they are giving them too much. here's our schedule: ela and math will be posted daily to complete that day. Book report/story map is every friday on TOP of the book they will be reading for ELA. science is tuesdays and thursdays (one assignment per day) social studies is monday, wednesday, friday (one assignment each day) music is assigned each tuesday and due the following week. there is also a weekly GYM log. You need to complete two+ hours of activity to get a 100. I was trying to limit going out, but now have no choice if I want to keep his grades up as exercising at home is not an option for us.
Trying to make sure all these assignments are completed daily is making me really anxious.

Re: So who else is suddenly homeschooling right now??
Week 2 Day 1, This too shall pass I keep telling myself. I was a total disaster last week having a 2nd, 1st and Kindergartner who never stops was rough. Our school sent home packets for the kids to do and I slacked on them last week. I did take out the kindles and put on some learning apps and I added Disney + to them so that should give me some free time. My son had his first playdate online with 7 other boys and he said not one word. I havent been watching the news but last night it came on while I was switching shows and I heard this could last 4-9 months!!!! WTF I can't do this for that long!! I also got crazy eyes from the kid at Carvel who did not understand why ice cream was an essential food service??? I told him alcohol and liquor will keep me alive these next few weeks. I think Im at the accepting part of all this. I long for the post at the top that says WE ARE FREE the virus is over!!! As for now, my kids will take an online art class which gives me a break and cards for my husband who is working in a food store and has been working harder than I have ever seen him work in the last 20 years.
