Re: OK, It opened yesterday. So who has seen United 93 already?

I was not personally effected whatsoever by the Titanic going down, and neither was 95% of the country when 9-11 happened. It dosent mean it didnt happen.

6 million jews died in the Holocaust. 6 MILLION! Was I personally effected, no. Does it hurt to even think about it? Yes, sure it does.

I think every American felt 9-11, no matter where you live. But there have been other movies, not in theaters, about 9-11.

I dont want to debate, but honestly, my curiousity is peaked, and different people react in different ways.

I just dont understand the logic of paying 5 bucks for it at Blockbuster, or 10 at the movies.

I dont think I want to go and see it, how many more movies do we need about this? it is hard enough for the families, they dont need 10,000 different movies about the same subject...

I agree.

i think they need to give it Time. Its not much different from Titanic or Schindlers list in theory, But, to me, those movies were Historical, and educational about something that a majority of us had not experienced. I think they need to give 9/11 some time to become 'history'. It happened just less than 5 years ago, and the events of that day still burns brightly in many people's heads. IMO they need to give the public some Time. like Aga said... how many movies are they going to make on it? there was One titanic movie, and one schindlers list. My opinion on those was that it was to bring to light something that few knew the true details of. thats not the case of 9/11 at all... we all know the details. we were there and we lived it, and we continue to live it with constant daily reminders.
it just feels like too much too soon. Time. thats the biggest difference here.

The media does not want us to forget, that is the reason for the constant shows and documenteries. This movie was made to honor the heroes on that plane who saved the Capitol, or possibly the White House.

Those people who took over that plane are heroes. Do you know how many other people could have died if they didnt storm that cockpit. I think every tribute to 9-11 is necessary.

I was going to go tonight but my brother said that last night all the shows were sold out in minutes basically so I am going to wait for a weeknight when it is a little less crowded. I just feel the need to see it and after watching the families of the victims explain why they felt the need to see it, I understand much more.

i agree about the tribute, and i agree that they were Heros. i dont think anyone would even attempt to debate that. But the Media's role- as powerful as it is- isn't always whats best for the country. YES, i think that the premise for the movie is great... BUT, i think they shouldve waited a few years IMO.

I'm not debating the Premise of the movie. Just the timing.

i definitely think of it as one of those things- people either REALLY want to see it, or Really don't... all personal preference.

Re: OK, It opened yesterday. So who has seen United 93 already?

Their was 2 movies already made about 9-11 so this is not a first movie to be made. It is just a first movie to be in theaters. One was made for HBO and is actually in blockbuster. I've seen it on HBO and also rented it. It is about the president and what he was doing that day and action taken. It's really moving. The second was made for the discovery chanel. It was called the flight that fought back. That was on tv on 9-11.

I dont think I'll see this in theaters as anything with 9-11 I want to be home. It's my "safe place" It's what comforted me during that time. I was there, I saw the 2nd plane hit the tower, I saw the first tower go down. My family lost a cousin, and DH's hubby was with the mayor running from the collapsing tower. My "safe place" is with my hubby and family as that is whose side I never left during the days that followed.

I have a lot of 9-11 books, magazines and articles saved. I have a box with all the articles and even my clothes I wore that day. It's something that is apart of history and a reminder that their are evil people in the world but their are also good ones. The good ones are the ones who took a stand and fought back.

Serious question...

How many of you have watched Titanic?

How many of you have watched Schindlers List?

It is the same. Believe me, my brother narrowly escaped the collapse of Tower 2, but this is reality, and people are going to make movies about it.

those are good points...made me think actually..why I felt "a difference".. I think it must be the personal effect 9/11 had on me.

There are lots of events that happened in my life time, Katrina, The Tsunami, genocide in India . the Iraqi Wars, The london bombings etc that I would have NO problem watching a movie about, probably because I was not personally affected. I think I would see my children watching this movie..not me , not now, not YET.

I dont like the idea of a profit being made so SOON I think?!?

But to each their own. I dont see anything wrong with the people who are interested in watching it. I actually learned alot about those who would see it reading this thread, and understand now why people would.

Re: OK, It opened yesterday. So who has seen United 93 already?

Sorry.....but i am not excited to watch a movie on peoples death like this

this IMO is totally different than the movie titanic, which was primarily a cheesy love story. NOT attempting to be based on actually events. Yes a boat went down...but i highly doubt that there was a jack and rose...
And that did happen a LONG time ago...

Shindlers list, also movie made MANY years after the fact...Based on the life of Shindler..

This movie IMO is wrong. I think that it is WAY tooooo soon to be making a movie like this...

IMO we aren't honoring anyone...How is this moving honoring them?

And exactly how are they making the events actual? Cell phone calls? Blackbox recordings? A movie that does not make IMO. Nobody who was there, who LIVED IT can tell their story. Unlike the people on Titanic or people who lived and survived the Holocaust...

AND then fact that the money from that movie....a movie "honoring" the victims, to which there would be NO MOVIE....got 10% of opening day....WHAT A FLUCKING JOKE!

It should be more like 80% of ALL proceedsChat Icon

I can watch footage from 9/11 over and over again. For some reason I become obsessed with it and I guess that it also may be comforting for some people.

I am the same way. I think it is my way of staying connected to that day. Anytime I come across a show on it - even if I have seen it, I will usually watch it.

ETA: Actually, that A&E movie Flight 93 is on now. I haven't seen it.

It's heartbreaking.

For those who choose to see it - and for those that don't - let's just all hope and pray that we never see anything like this ever again in our lifetimes (and that no one else has to ever experience anything like it ever again.)Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I hear what you are saying....but honestly seeing documentaries on it....is like reliving it, experiencing that day over and over.

And i just have no need or want to do that. It was devestating enough the first time

And imo we do not need a movie to remember or to keep them in my mind. The day will be in my heart and in my brain for the rest of my life...

And i dont think i need to see a movie to justify thatChat Icon

It is honestly the complete opposite for me. Whenever these is something on TV about it I am drawn to it. It's been that way since day 1. I can't explain it - I can watch the same ones over and over again.

Making money off a tragedy -- which let's face it, a move is -- is not a way to honor people. Just my opinion. Like others said, I think the key difference between this movie and other "historical" movies is timing. The emotions of 09/11 are so raw and still so painful for so many of us. Yes, the Holocaust and WWII and Vietnam are sad but this is RAW.

Also, I think ALL of the victims of 9/11 are heroes and it always upsets me that some people get more attention than other. Yes, these passengers fought back and good for them but that does not make any other victim of 9/11 any less a hero for not fighting back and it upsets me whenever they highlight one group. How does this movie, or all the attention on this flight, make the families of victims on all those other flights feel? Were they any less significant because they did not fight back?

I know I am not alone when I say I cannot and will not ever forget 9/11, whether I see this movie or any other.

I agree...it is very different for each person...

When my Grandfather watched Saving Private Ryan....and similar movies...he is moved to pieces...

For me...that day was one of the most frightening day of my life. I knew my father worked in that area...And watching the towers go down from a tv...was a heart stopping, frightening moment. Not knowing where he was or if he was alright...

And i get that sick sick sick sick feeling everytime i see those documentaries ....

i just can't

Re: OK, It opened yesterday. So who has seen United 93 already?

Dh and I had a heartfelt discussion today about whether we'd see this and we were both moved to tears. We try not to talk about it bc it was the absolute worst day of our lives - not knowing where each other was and him not knowing if i was even alive. i dont need a movie to remind me of how i watched the second tower hit from my window a couple of blocks away, how i feared for my life, how i RAN for my life when the 1st tower collapsed nearby but i thought the noise was a third plane about to start dropping bombs, about how i heard that the white house and the sears tower were bombed, about gradually hearing for days about friends who were still missing, about how when i returned to work i couldnt breathe and was terrified to call any business contacts for fear that they were dead. if you ask me, its WAY too soon for this and comparing to titanic and WWII movies that happened well over 50 yrs ago? IMO not even comparable. i still hear songs on the radio that remind me of friends who died there singing them at karaoke - that right there tells me this is too fresh in everyone's minds. sorry for being dramatic but this topic just hits too close...

ETA: i understand THIS particular movie is about one subset of ppl who didnt directly impact NYC but IMO, that might have happened on all the flights that hit the WTC & the capitol - we'll just never know so its all one event - 9/11 - to me.
