Re: OK, It opened yesterday. So who has seen United 93 already?

DH and I saw it tonight.

It is extremely well-done.

It was extremely touching and heart-wrenching and I think, needs to be seen - by everyone. Yes it is hard to watch but it honors the heroes on that flight.

I am still in emotional turmoil, as is DH who feels exteme guilt over not having been able to help that day, as he was driving over the GW bridge and watched the second plane hit the tower.

are they donating the proceeds? B/C if not I would never ever go see it. I dont think its right to make money off a tragedy.

They are donating 10% of profits from the first weekend to the memorial that is being built in Shanksville, PA.

I'm not going to see it in the theaters, only because I know I'm not ready yet and will be a hysterical, sobbing mess. I do think it would be interesting to see how the FAA was handling it all. I like that they use a lot of those acutal people in the movie, including the guy who really made all the decisions that day. I feel like at least it will be true to what happened.

OK, I just got back, and I agree with you Kara, 100%.
Its difficult, and seems almost inappropriate to say that it is a beautiful movie, but in fact, it is.

Everyone left that theater hand-in-hand tonight. Men were kissing tears off of their wives' cheeks. If NOTHING ELSE, this film makes us realize the fragility of life and love, and how we take it for granted.

Of course, the film is upsetting, and shocking, and tough to swallow. I am an extreeeemely emotional person, and went in prepared, with 30 Kleenex. However, I only cried once. My only tears came when the passengers aboard United 93 were calling their loved ones. I was scared for those people. And I was PROUD of those people....proud of what they did for this country.

God forbid that plane DID hit its target. Where would America be today?!

i think they need to give it Time. Its not much different from Titanic or Schindlers list in theory, But, to me, those movies were Historical, and educational about something that a majority of us had not experienced. I think they need to give 9/11 some time to become 'history'. It happened just less than 5 years ago, and the events of that day still burns brightly in many people's heads. IMO they need to give the public some Time. like Aga said... how many movies are they going to make on it? there was One titanic movie, and one schindlers list. My opinion on those was that it was to bring to light something that few knew the true details of. thats not the case of 9/11 at all... we all know the details. we were there and we lived it, and we continue to live it with constant daily reminders.
it just feels like too much too soon. Time. thats the biggest difference here.

I agree. I think that movies that display a tragedy in time are often to bring about awareness to a new generation. None of us were there for Titanic, Shindler's List or even Pearl Harbor and Vietnam for that matter, but keeping the events alive is important, but in time. This movie I'm sure is a display of heroic actions, but WE lived it like our grandparents lived Pearl Harbor. I'm sure that the fathers who fought in Vietnam didn't want to see movies about the war fresh from coming home. But they'd appreciate their children knowing what happened. IMO, we don't need a reminder to keep the memories fresh. They still are fresh. Not a day or week goes by in which 9/11 isn't brought up. It's our children and our children's children that need to see it. JMO.

well said, I dont think we need movies to remind us, NO ONE will EVER FORGET 9/11.
I saw the one on the History channel, and yes it was very upsetting, and glad I saw it, buI will wait till it come out on video, because it will be the same as the one on t.v.

I don't think I want to go and see it, how many more movies do we need about this? it is hard enough for the families, they dont need 10,000 different movies about the same subject...

I agree.

Actually. there are a lot more movies about the Titanic, but only one was a blockbuster. And movies couldn't really be made about the Titanic right after because of technology. So they had time to give. And yes there was only one Schindler's list, but how many holocaust movies are there? At least a dozen. And each is special in it's own way.

To me a tragedy is a tragedy no matter whether it happened in my life or not. I don't think there's anything wrong with them making this movie. It's not only about money, it's also about telling a story-or in this case many stories. It's about the people who gave their life to save who knows how many other Americans. To me this part of 9-11 is different. This is a movie about heroes not terrorists. And many of the families were actually for this movie. They want their loved ones story told. They want America to know that their husband/wife/daughter/son, etc gave up their life to help protect America. They want to give a glimpse to America of what they lost.

I plan on seeing it. I think it's doing an honor to the memory of those who died on that plane to see it.

Re: So who has seen United 93 already? (updated pg 3. We went.)

To answer the original question, no I will not see it.

I saw Titanic. Like someone said - it was mostly a love story. I tend to turn off the DVD at the point where the boat starts to sink.

And I've never seen Schindler's List because I think it's too upsetting to think about how that stuff really happened.

I'm not in denial in the least, but for me, real life tragedy movies are not entertainment.

For me, personally, movies are about escapism from my own everyday dramas and if I want to learn about the history of these events I'll watch a documentary or read a book about them.

But I definitely understand other people's desire to see it. I wonder how it will do in the box office. I'd like to see how it compares in NY to the rest of the country/world.

the only thing this movie is doing is making money off their deaths....not honoring them

THE SALTINE HAS SPOKENChat Icon

I agree with the saltine 100%. I do not think the producers of this movie sat around in a room going "How can we tell this amazing story because these people need to be honored!" I think they were sitting around going "How can we can capitalize on this tragedy without p!ssing everybody off?" I just don't see them sitting there saying - who cares about the money, it's about the heros!

A documentary on the discovery channel is one thing, an attempt at a box office blockbuster is completely another.

Has anyone looked at the official website of this movie? You can do so by clicking here.
This film opened at the tribeca film fest. which makes me think its not as "hollywood" as people would like to believe (or blame).
I have to say, this film seems to focus a little more on American heroism and I am more prone to see this then the "world Trade Center" movie which will be opening soon.

that's what I felt while watching it.

I'm not going to get all defensive and jump on the people that say its just to make money - BUT I WILL SAY that you shouldn't judge til you see it.

when i first heard this movie was coming out, I like many others was totally against it.. How cold they, its too soon. etc..

However, after hearing how all the families of the people on board flight 93 approved the movie to be made, I started to open my mind a little. the fact they did what is called docudrama?? ( if forgot what the technical terms were)

I heard it was tastefully done...
the fact they didnt use real actors also was interesting to me. they actually used some of the real air traffic control men and women working that day...

Too soon? Maybe... but will it ever be ok? the idea is not to forget, EVER whether it be 5 months, 5 years, 50 years..

.....i might just go see this one..

the one coming out with nicolas cage... not as willing to go see.

I'm not ready to see it, but DH and his brother went and saw it on Friday night. My BIL is an air traffic controller and quite a few of his colleagues/friends were in the movie playing themselves -

They both said it was very tastefully done and while it was a bit difficult to 'relive' it was done in the utmost respect towards the families of those involved..

Posted by karacg

It is extremely well-done.

It was extremely touching and heart-wrenching and I think, needs to be seen - by everyone. Yes it is hard to watch but it honors the heroes on that flight.

Kara, this is exactly what my husband said as well -

Again, for me personally - I'm not at all ready to see it but might attempt to watch it when it is released on DVD
