Social Security Office & name change

I'm recently married and wold like to change my name. I called the SS office to see if, as a Queens resident, I can go to any SS office to do this and was told yes (although she didn't sound too confident).
A friend told me she lives in Queens and tried to change it in Manhattan and they said she couldn't. Anyone know the rules about this? Since I apparently can't rely on the office to give me the right info.

PS...Brooklyn & Queens residents have to apply for name changes in person...grrr...

I live in Queens. I was told I HAD to go to Jamaica to do it - NO OTHER office will do it if you live in Queens. Chat Icon No one has been able to tell me WHY this is, since it's a FEDERAL document, but I was redirected from 2 other offices and finally had to go to Jamaica.

I live in Nassau and changed my name at the SS office in Midtown Manhattan. I had no problems...

ETA -- but I remember reading something about other people from Queens having issues on LIW. Maybe do a search over there?

Chat Icon I was afraid of that. I even asked the lady 3 times to make sure and she said yes it was fine. I guess I'll go to jamaica one morning next week. Chat Icon

Thank you!!

I work for SS and you have to go to Jamaica. It is the card center for Brooklyn and Queens residents.

ETA: When you call the 800 number you can get someone in any part of the country - card centers are kind of new so they may have no idea about it. In areas with no card centers, (like LI) then yes you can go to ANY office.

ETAA: Also, you CAN get a new card through the mail BUT you have to mail in your ORIGINAL documents to do so. I would never mail my passport or marriage certificate though so I don't recommend it.
