So....I think I witnessed a theft just before....

I am saying "I think" because of course you never really know, but that's sure as heck what I think it was. Anyway, I was in the supermarket and waiting on line at the self checkout. There's one line for four self check out stations. Anyway, the cashier that is supposed to be standing there to help walked away for whatever reason and there was a guy with three boys ages approx. 8, 10 and 14 or 15. So, the girl walks away, he looks around, grabs his bags and RUNS out of the store. Now, I can see on his register that he has not paid. He didn't even finish ringing up a couple of things in the cart. The two younger boys were going, "Wait, he didn't pay! Dad didn't pay!" and stood there not knowing what to do. So the older boy who was facing the other direction on his cell phone turns around and says, "What?! Where's dad? Oh god, let's go! Let's go!" And the kids ran out of there as fast as could be. So then the next person goes up to the register there and low and behold the man had not paid for the groceries, so the cashier comes back and they're trying to cancel the other guy's order so they can ring up theirs, and the cashier says, "Oh, do you want to cancel your order?" and they say, "Um, it's not OURS, that guy just STOLE his groceries when you walked away!" And the girl looks at him, shrugs her shoulders, says, "Oh well." and continues on her merry wayChat Icon
I don't know if I should have found a manager or not, but I feel like I should have and I didn't. This is like the third time this week I've been to this same grocery store and there are unattended, open check out lines. And the others are usually the ones with the cashiers. And it's always teenagers who I inevitably find hanging out at another cash register, chit chatting away, texting or making out with each other. Yes, I said making out with each other. Ugg.

How could he do that? Especially with his kids right there??? Outside of all the other issues, what kind of example is that?

Re: So....I think I witnessed a theft just before....

I would think at the very least it should be reported to the manager by the cashier in charge of the area. And let the manager decide what should be done. If it's occuring enough, surely they would want to rethink the whole idea of how the area is attended. I've never seen someone outright do that but I suppose people can be shifty about if they've rung something up or not.
ETA: Wait... it was a father with kids?!?? Wow!

I felt SO bad for the kids. The two little ones were so confused, but it seemed like the older one had the attitude of, "Oh god, here we go again." Chat Icon

the stores in my area, there is NO way to not ring up something and put it in the bag. The bags are on a sensor that verifies the weight of the product. If you scan something and then try to scan something else without putting item 1 in the bag, it will not let you

Yes, I would say something. Maybe over the phone so that they can't see you and retaliate.

The supermarkets have HUGE shrink margins - so unless he managed to walk out with 10K in groceries and other items it won't even be a blip to them.

Yeah-but his kid had a cell phone (I would think food comes before cell phones for a teenager) AND he did it in front of his kid. If I ever ever ever found myself in the situation where I need to steal to feed my kidd I could never do it in front of my kids.

My supermarket is like this too- I actually find it too sensitive and seldom use the self-check. But I do think it's needed. Sadly, I think we'll see more of this as more people lose their jobs. But it's a shame that he had to involve his kids.

It is sad that the man stole the groceries, especially in front of his children. I certainly would have found a manager to report the salesgirl who thought it was no big deal.

How sad for that man that he was desperate enough to do this in front of his kids. How sad for the kids to have to witness such desperation. If he didn't need to do it, I'm sure he wouldn't.

that's giving him the benefit of the doubt.

a lot of people steal just to steal. they get a high from it and it's not out of desperation. look at winona ryder---she certainly didn't need to steal clothes but did it anyway.

there's no excuse for stealing from a store. there are food banks where you can get food for free. and the 15 yo can sell the cell phone.

i feel badly for the kids. what a poor role modelChat Icon

That is horrible. What a terrible example for his kids! I wonder if he did it because he didn't have enough $ to feed them.
