Hmmmmm. I didn't even think of that possibility. Whatever the case was, I am kicking myself that I didn't find a manager and complain, but I always feel like it's not going to matter because when I've complained in the past, the manager just looks at me like I'm an idiot and there's still kids goofing off all over the store. I think I'm going to stop shopping there, though. It's driving me nuts that there are unsupervised kids running the store.

Yep, thats what I thought!!! There are always kids running around, teenagers, I mean. I am not a fan of that place and sometimes go to King Kullen across the street just to get away from all the crazies that frequent it.

I had a fight with the mngr there a few weeks back. I needed them to put an extra club card in for me for my groceries and they told me they couldnt bc of the free turkey giveaway...I mean seriously...you've got to be kidding with me. So sign me up for a new card...I am not paying full price! OY Chat Icon They are all just so Laxed there. Something wrong with that place. Though I dont love king kullen but maybe use stop and shop down the block.

As for the stealer, I always feel bad for people that need to steal groceries bc its really not a luxury item...its a necessity. Obviously this man doesnt have the $$$ which makes the story sad being that he has 3 children. Though to steal with 3 children in your presence ...OUCH! Hes not teaching them the right thing...thats for sure. I just wonder what society is going to become when people are getting laid off and cant afford to eat... People become desperate...not right or wrong...just saying I would do anything to feed dd.

Maybe he was mentally ill Chat Icon Sounds like the kids were shocked too...

I saw a man stuffing bottles of shampoo into his jacket once in CVS...I did tell a manager but by the time they looked around he was gone.

How the Patchogue Waldbaum's parking lot is always so busy yet the store isn't is always a weird thing...

...and I hate how that store only ever seems to have two registers open at any time of day.

Ahahaha. I'm glad someone noticed. FM sent.

Re: So....I think I witnessed a theft just before....

How sad...

I would have felt bad for the guy and those kids.. i mean if youre going to steal food, its pretty low. Even lower when you're willing to take what you can and run, leaving your kids behind.

It sounds like he took advantage of the situtation and the store sounds pretty much like their asking for it with them being so laxed/lazy.

Still....
I guess I would have wanted to report it, but then again, what good would it do? Its not like they can get him back and it doesnt seem like they much cared. Its a wonder if it doesnt happen more often?Chat Icon The way the cashier was so nonchalant about it.

Given what you've said about the store, its employees and management, I probably wouldn't have said a word and just minded my own business.

What a sad world we live in Chat Icon

That's awful. It's a terrible thing to do, especially in front of children.

But I would not have reported it. I don't know the guy's situation, and it's the store's problem to catch things like that.

I disagree with this.. Shoplifting affects all of us because it leads to higher prices

While I think this guy is setting a bad example for his kids, for some reason I am more hung up on the employees making out with each other. Chat Icon What the heck is up with THAT?

Re: So....I think I witnessed a theft just before....

That is a terrible example for his kids.

The stores that have these self checkout aisles are asking for trouble...there are always going to be people trying to scam the system.

It leads to higher prices for the consumers, but the way they see it is, is that they are spending less money on employee salaries.

The girl who was supposed to be watching the registers was at fault, but what can she really do. I would not risk my life, chasing a man down in a parking lot for minimum wage.

She could of called a manager, but she probably thought she would get in trouble for not watching the checkout lanes.

I wouldn't say that. Shrink is a part of doing business, and unless a huge ring of theft is happening (or if the store is located in a high crime area), shrink caused by theft is just a drop in the bucket to most retail.

What leads to higher prices is the manufacturers playing hardball with the supermarkets and their distributors.

Just because it is expected doesn't mean it doesn't add to price increases. They mark the prices up because they expect it. If people didn't do it, they wouldn't mark the prices up. I think it is sad that we've come to expect this from people.

Of course, I think this whole situation is sad.

Re: So....I think I witnessed a theft just before....

I saw a man stealing formula the other day - he put a knapsack on the shelf and just started putting cans of formula in there - the $25 enfamil cans - at first I thought, let me give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he will bring it to the register to pay - sure enough, he didn't, so I told the manager - but it was too late. She said that people steal the enfamil and sell it on the street or mix it with drugs. Sure enough, the next week there was a sign that the enfamil was being stored behind the customer service desk and if you wanted to buy it, you had to pay for it at the customer service desk.

What an a-hole! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Not only did he run out try to 'get over' on the grocery store...he didn't give a flying f about his kids apparantly.

I am like you and usually feel like I should say something but never do. I tend to 'mind my own business' in situations like that.

But boy oh boy, what a jerk! Things like this really bug me...it's a total disregard for everyone else but himself.

And what's with the cashier. If you dont' like your job and would rather be chit chatting, then give the job to someone who needs it and is actually going to DO it!!!Chat Icon

OK - so let's all just go around taking whatever we want from whomever we want it. It doesn't matter if we are doing it on the backs of hard working people. It's ok. It's 'expected.' Chat Icon

Stop taking words out of context. I said nothing about whether the stealing is right (and you're right, it's completely wrong). I was just trying to correct a common misconception.
