I have to do a demo lesson for 1st grade on problem solving on the subject of math. I was thinking of using manipulatives or pictures. Any suggestions???? I appreciate all of your experience and I am always interesed to see what experienced teachers would suggest!!!! I am just beginning my search to find the perfect demo lesson on this topic. Thanks in advance! Update on bottom!

Re: Okay Teachers! I Need Advice Please! I got through the interview...now I need to do a Demo Lesson....
Pictures are great because you are differentiating for the visual learners. Manipulatives are always good, but they can be distracting so give it to them after you explain and they have to work on something. Also, keep the standards in mind. For example, if you are giving a word problem, the numbers should add up to 10, not higher unless you are challenging some students. Good luck!! FM me if you have any other questions.

Sounds good. Maybe try a fall theme. Not all kids celebrate Halloween so play it safe with cutouts of leaves, pumpkins, apples, etc. Try making it interactive so the kids hold/move the pictures. You could also have them do partner work, and you walk around guiding them.
Review adding and subtracting, the symbols (write them on an index card and place them on the board), and key words like in all or are left.
Example: You could have a tree with leaves, have a kid point and everyone counts the leaves on the tress, have them pretend they are the wind and blow the tree (you move some leaves down), you say," Uh-oh how many fell?, have a kid point and everyone counts how many fell, and they can figure out how many are left. Just a random idea! HTH!

I teach SS so i cant help w/ the lesson but i can give you some tips.
They are looking for an organized lesson that has a clear objective. Most of the time its not a "dog and pony" show theyre looking for. Have a clear beginning, middle and end. Make sure you have a closing question. They are more interested in your delivery and preparation than in the ACTUAL lesson. They want to hear how clear your directions are.

Re: HELP-1st grade lesson plan on drawing pictures as a strategy to solve word problems???
Okay, I made up my own lesson plan along with my own worksheet!
I am going with a safe lesson on using Unifix cubes to solve math addition word problems as a problem solving strategy. I will of course model with students with exciting amusement park word problems and show examples how to use cubes to add. I will set the rules before handing out the cubes as well along with stating consequences for mishandeling the cubes. I will scoop out cubes for each student into a cup and hand them out. I will also buy plates with three sections (like a peace sign) so students can put one amount on the top left, the other on the top right, and the total amount connected on the large bottom portion.
Let's hope it goes smoothly! It is Thursday! Pray for me!!!
