Can you tell me, what you chose NOT to get as far as shots and why. We are still trying to decide what we are doing, time is getting near and any info you have would be great. TIA

ETA: He will not be in a daycare.

Re: Sorry to crash, but Parents that did NOT vaccinate please come in...

I know this isn't what you are asking for but for what it's worth, I wanted to tell you this.....Our ped told me last week that DS had rotovirus. He received the full vaccination for it. After reading online how bad it could have been if he had not been vaccinated, I decided that I am not delaying any of his shots. He was SO sick, even with the vaccine, I can't imagine what we would have been through if he hadn't received it.

Good luck with your decision and the rest of your pregnancy.

Re: Sorry to crash, but Parents that did NOT vaccinate please come in...

I chose to vaccinate but at a delayed schedule. I did not choose to delay vaccines b/c I thought my child would develope autism or any kind of developments issue. IMO I feel we are overloading our children with vaccines BUT I do think they are necessary.

I do/did NOT give the rotovirus vaccine...my ped. does not give this vaccine nor do I think it is necessary. I will not give the chicken pox vaccine or the flu vaccine until it is necessary come school time. I again, dont think they are necessary. However, keep in mind, I am a SAHM mom and my child is not in daycare.

In regards to the other vaccines, I started his schedule at 3 months. I skipped the Hep shot in the hospital when he was born...did not see a reason for it. DS gets 1 vaccine and only 1 vaccine at a time/per month. More doctors visits for me...but more peace of mind as well. I gave him the most important vaccines first...Hib, PCV, DTap and Polio. I read many of books and articles and think these are necessary. I postponed the Hep shots until these were all finished and he still needs some of those boosters.

I plan on waiting to give the MMR until DS is at least 2 1/2, probably closer to 3 and again this shot will be seperated into the measles shot, mumps shot and rubella shot.

Before you make this type of decision I think you need to make sure you research your choice extensively and truely educate yourself. If your child is going to be in daycare or around other children I think it is important for them to be vaccinated although you may choose to a different schedule as I did.

ETA: Just wanted to add you may find it hard to find a pediatrician who will see your child even if you choose not to vaccinate entirely. Every ped. is different. I met with my ped. before giving birth and LOVED him. He was ok with my delaying certain vaccinates and helped me to come up with a different schedule. Some peds give 4 shots at 1 visit...my ped. thinks that is overload and will give 2 max. As I mentioned above I only allow 1 vaccine per month. And if he is sick I skip that month entirely until he is better.

Every ped. is different just like every child is and so is their reaction to vaccines.

Re: Sorry to crash, but Parents that did NOT vaccinate please come in...

You need to realize that most daycare will NOT take your unvaccinated child.

If you claim religious belief, you cannot pick and choose your vaccines. It's either all or nothing.

I personally think NOT vaccinated children while going to daycare, gymborees is very risky.

We "spaced" DS' vaccines so far. He is 17 months and did not get MMR or Chicken Pox yet. I wanted to split the MMR but my PED told me they had shortage so now I can't split with their office.

ETA: I agree with PP. You need to check how the PED you have feel about vaccination. The office we go to, they are flexible on schedule but clearly told us that they do not believe in no vaccination and that if it was our wishes they were no the right office for us. I do not give more than 1-2 vaccines per visit.

When I was making my decision, I found the vaccine book by dr sears really helpful.

I read "Shot in the Dark" while making my decision. Ultimately I decided to vaccinate but delayed as well. Part of my reason was that I expect my children will travel as I did & I wanted them to be protected.

My sister chose not to vaccinate her children. In NY, you must do it based on medical or religious reasons. This means when enrolling your child in daycare or school, you will have to state your reasons for exemptions. Be prepared to have to go in & answer questions. My sister has an attorney who specializes in that field & he goes to her to the school meetings.

We are in the process of researching/ deciding how we are handling vaccinations etc. Here are a few books/resources we are currently looking at...

Vaccination: The Issue of Our Times
A Shot In The Dark

National Vaccination INformation Center

Homefirst

A very informative DVD called Vaccines: What CDC Documents and Science Reveal By Dr. Sherri Tenpenny.

This should help to get you started....

Re: Sorry to crash, but Parents that did NOT vaccinate please come in...

I have delayed DS's shots, but he is still on schedule. DS gets only 2 vaccines per visit. For DTaP he only got that one because it is a combo vaccine. It will be the same for him with the MMR. He will only get that one by itself. The only shot DS never received is the rotovirus one because he is at home and last year it was only 3 years old. Some doctor's don't even give that one so I felt ok with my decision. In some areas there is a shortage of spilt our MMR shots so they are only giving the combo ones. I personally feel that they give so many shots at once and that it can overload their system. With all that saiid, I still will give DS his shots just delayed with in the prescribed time frame.

Crissy -- I love your plan and it is so similar to mine Chat Icon I agree with vaccinating, just not OVER vaccinating.

Do they have to have the chicken pox vaccine before they can go to kindergarten?

We did vaccinate DD but on a very delayed schedule. She didn't start any vaccinations at all until she was almost 6 months and then I would only give one shot at a time so I could know if she had a reaction or not. If you give 3 shots how would you know what shot your child is reacting too.
We declined Hep B in the hospital and she only got Hep B and the MMR this year as she was starting preschool.
I am not comfortable with not vaccinating at all but I am also not comfortable with the current CDC schedule and how it is so many shots at one time.

My ped doesn't give the rotovirus vaccine. I asked him why and he said he found that more of his patients got the virus when they got the vaccine, than when they didn't.

Re: Sorry to crash, but Parents that did NOT vaccinate please come in...

I am on a conservative schedule. If DS was not in school I would not vaccinate at all. I do not buy into the whole autism thing. I beleive that anything that has to do with autism HAS to come from a genetic pre-disposition of some sort, not a vaccine ingredient. But that is JMO.

I delay and split b/c:

1- we (as a society) overload shots to save time/money. That is it. If we look at the schedule from 30 years ago to the schedule now it is amazing how many more shots we give overall, and at a much younger age. IMO it is too much too soon.

2- DS runs very high fevers. He has had on more than one occasion fevers of 105 and 106. There is a strong risk of seizures, and I will not risk that.

3- DS seems to have the same composition as me in that he has had reactions to some vaccines that are supposed to be the "safer" vaccines. I have awful reactions to many vaccines as well.

Def have a long talk with your ped or even any other HC professional who may offer you some real insight.

Re: Sorry to crash, but Parents that did NOT vaccinate please come in...

I asked about this before I gave birth. I am an autism professional and firmly am against any correlation with vaccines, but dh and I are Vegan all natural types so we explored our options. I found books to be very biased in the anti vaccine argument, and that bothered me. I didn't need scare tactics. I needed facts. We knew our baby would be in daycare At 8 weeks, so we needed a well thought out decision. I decided to vaccinate because I didn't want to always fight. I couldn't lie and claim its against my religion over and over again, and I didn't want to jeopardize my childs health. When I discovered I wouldn't find a Ped to even support this, I decided that the best thing to do was vaccinate. Despite some reactions to his shots, I am happy with my decision.

You may have some more freedom if he is not in daycare - you will have to discuss with your Ped....

He got very, very sick from it too!!!

I hate that ne needed that - who in the US dies of chicken pox????

I'll never know for sure I guess, but I am convinced DS got it at daycare. He got sick shortly after starting there and finished his vaccine several months ago.

The OP edited and said her DS won't be in daycare - that would have had a big influence on delaying or not. I knew my DS would be in daycare and was unsure when he would start, so I generally followed the ped's schedule.

Just remember that going to the library, taking a gymboree class, traveling in a plane, etc.. are all potential risk for an unvaccinated child.

Again, of course its your personal choice if you give your child the MMR or not, but where I live we have had a HUGE measles outbreak due to people not choosing to vaccinate their children and they have had to vaccinate ten thousand middle school aged children now. There have been 62 cases of Measles, and this is the legacy of people choosing not to vaccinate their children because of fear over the MMR Jab.

The US is having a major measles outbreak for the same reason as well.

And Sophie is right, even if you do not have your child in daycare, they will still be in classes, etc.

Actually the current CDC recording for measles outbreak in the US for 2008 is 132 cases.... and between 2003-2007 a total of 257 cases. I'm not sure the breakdown of those contracting it that were vaccinated and those who weren't and those with immuno-deficinecys or not

A great resource if anyone is interested in the current totals of major diseases in the US. Straight from the CDC....

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/weekcvol.html

Download the current "Volume" and you can get all the stas as well as any other epidemics arising in the US.

Our pediatrician feels that it is inhumane to give too many shots at one visit. However the practice will not support families who refuse to vaccinate and ask them to leave the practice.

Re: Sorry to crash, but Parents that did NOT vaccinate please come in...

I try to stay off this topic but I will tell you this..
There are MANNNNNNNNY doctors that believe in delaying, not vaccinating or eliminating some.
You have to do what you feel.
We delay--in fact-my kids have not had one in quite awhile, they have been getting colds and such from the older kids.
I would never ever vaccinate a child that had a cold or anything.
It is also very imp--and the doc will tell you-ask what company..ex: Pasteur he usesfor eachshot and look up the ingredients and see if you are comfortable.
I would never do morethen one at a time and the MMR will not happen here until 3 years ofage.
This isnot due to AUTISM this is due to people I have met, charities I have been affiliatedwith and scientific proof.
We are now giving 2x the amount then we got.
Always go with your gut and do not letanyone tell you diffrently-every child is different and has a different immune system.
