We did vaccinate DD but on a very delayed schedule. She didn't start any vaccinations at all until she was almost 6 months and then I would only give one shot at a time so I could know if she had a reaction or not. If you give 3 shots how would you know what shot your child is reacting too.
We declined Hep B in the hospital and she only got Hep B and the MMR this year as she was starting preschool.
I am not comfortable with not vaccinating at all but I am also not comfortable with the current CDC schedule and how it is so many shots at one time.

ITA. But at the time didn't know any better and started earlier. This baby will be a lot more delayed on her vaccines then Andrew was.

We are in the minority...but we have done his immunizations on schedule according to the Ped. So far, he has had them all including Chix Pox and MMR, and we luckily have had no reactions.

You may have some more freedom if he is not in daycare - you will have to discuss with your Ped....

Lizzy - to answer your question - Cailen was required by daycare to get his chicken pox vacc at 18 mts!

He got very, very sick from it too!!!

I hate that ne needed that - who in the US dies of chicken pox????

That scares me a bit because I can't be exposed to a child that has had that vaccine and DD is starting daycare in 4-6 weeks.

I'm just wondering what the reason for not going near a child who has had that shot - is there something about that shot that I don't know about?

That is hard to say - b/c every time you leave the house you have no idea what adult or child has had that shot recently. Daycare or not.

Re: Sorry to crash, but Parents that did NOT vaccinate please come in...

I also have done alot of research on this subject. For me, it is not so much the fears of autism but the fact that DS always has reactions to every shot and there is a history of serious reactions to shots in both my family and DH's.

I gave DS most of his shots on schedule (but only two at a time) but, never when he was sick. We started shots at 10wks only b/c I felt that there was no sense in delaying those early ones (HIB, Pc, DTAP) b/c they were most important in those early months when it was most likely DS would get it and it would be most harmful to him. I did however not give him ANY Hep B's until he is was 13 mos and at that point he got the first one. My ped was fine with this b/c since neither DH nor I have Hep B the only way he could get it at this age would be if someone bit him. Given he was not in daycare the likelihood of him being bit b/f the age of one was NIL.

As for the MMR and Chicken pox - I am personally very concerned about these shots for MANY MANY reasons. I plan to put them off for as long as I can and am considering splitting the MMR if possible.

Also, with respect to the Rotavirus vaccine - DS did not get it b/c my Ped does not give it for a reason. He said (and if you read up on it u will find this to be true) the original vaccine a few years back was recalled after many many children had many serious life altering affects from it. My ped said that he had given this vaccine to his patients and was appalled by this. He said the new rotavirus vaccine has not been around long enough for him to be satisfied that it is safe for his patients. In his opinion this could be more dangerous than the risk of contracting the illness.

Hope this helps - I know how hard these decisions can be Chat Icon

ETA: I also want to add that I don't make these decisions lightly. Of COURSE i am worried about DS getting MM or R or chicken pox in the mean time - I am not ignorant on the subject I am well aware of the measles outbreak in the UK and other places HOWEVER, that said, every child is different - I think it may be hard for parents of children that tolerate vaccines to understand why some of us get so worked up about this issue.

In our country the government has decided it is worth it to sacrifice the few for the good of the many when it comes to vaccines. By this I mean there are children wh will be harmed by the vaccines but, b/c of fear of these diseases effect on the masses that outweighs it. However, if you are the parent of those children you may feel differently. I feel that it is unacceptable that there is no exemption based on a child's individual immune system tolerance.
