Spay/Neuter, Did your baby stay..(Update)

Overnight at the Vet?

Bella is having this done on Friday and she was going to stay overnight. While I was at the local pet store I go to, the owner said tell them you want to take her home, she would be more comfortable in her own home, etc...

I don't have any children at home, just me and DH so Bella being around small children wont be an issue. I am nervous in case something happens, but then again, I highly don't think there is going to be someone watching her at the vet 24/7 either Chat Icon

What are your thoughts?

Update: I just called the Vet. There is actually someone that comes in the office during the night and checks on all the animals after surgery. She said that they do it as a precationary measure and they try to avoid the puppy getting excitied and using thier abdominal muscles for at least 24 hours after surgery.

I feel a little better knowing someone will be there with her.Chat Icon

I am still of course nervous, but I trust my Vet 100% and if they feel it's the best thing to do, so be it.

Nope. Both my kittens had their surgery in the morning and came home later that afternoon. They did just fine, they were running around like their normal selves as soon as they got adjusted to wearing the e-collars!

Re: Spay/Neuter, Did your baby stay..

it's different (i think) when a dog gets spayed as opposed to neutered because there are more stitches and there is a great chance of them coming open - i think the reason they keep them overnight is to make sure they are confined and resting while the incision starts to heal. it can't hurt to ask your vet, though - good luck bella!!

The boys did not stay over night (they were there about 12 hours).

Re: Spay/Neuter, Did your baby stay..

My girl stayed overnight, the boys did not. All of my surgeries for the pups were the first ones in the morning.

Girls have a higher risk of infection, and the surgery is more invasive. Also, their jumping and climbing movements can disrupt the incision, so I let her stay overnight. The vet het me come to see her & play with her (gently, of course) for a while before she had to go back into the crate. I really just fed her & held her a bit.

Re: Spay/Neuter, Did your baby stay..

My girl dog did not stay overnight. As my vet told me, there is no one there overnight so she would be much better off with me, in case of an emergency.

It serves no purpose if there are not staff members there all night. Check it out and then ask your vet if she can come home.

My girl came home, she was cranky and in pain but fine. We did make sure to know of the nearest 24 emergency vet should any problems arise.

I personally would take her home.

Thank you everyone.

I am going to call now and see what they say. My main concern is if there is someone there 24/7, if not I am taking her home regardless.

Ok let us know. It is up to you, but my vet did not give an option. If the girl does well during surgery, she goes home later in the day.

I was glad to have her home b/c I was worried about leaving her, and was shocked when I heard they really don't do that at my vet's anymore. And I trust my vet 100%.

If someone comes to check, then ok.

I do agree though, them staying overnight does limit activity.

I agree also with that and that is the ONLY reason why I think it's better she stays. She is such an active puppy and she jumps around, loves belly rubs, etc.. she may get way to excited if she sees me or DH Chat Icon
