Speaking of home invasions...
Who else has experienced one or more?
We had 6, yes SIX, in the house I grew up in. Some bizarre (like when someone broke into our basement on a Saturday afternoon, opened the door from the basement to the house, which set off the alarm, which sent him running through the house, through the front door and outside )
Some were traumatizing (waking up at 2am hearing my father screaming to my mother to call 911 because there was someone in the house, and after the police searched the house, they said, in front of ME, being 8 years old at the time, that he might still be hiding in the house)
And one was deeply disturbing and frightening. I was 18 years old, home alone and sitting in my parent's bedroom, which was above our sunroom, when, at around 11pm, I heard noises coming from the sunroom. We had a really stupid alarm system where someone could be IN the sunroom but the alarm wouldn't go off until they opened the door from the sunroom to the living room. I thought maybe the cat or dog was locked in the room, so I walked downstairs and heard more scuffling. I called my dog over to my side. More noises. I turned on the light to the sunroom (the light switch was outside the door in the living room). I heard someone pulling down the shades in the sunroom. I stood, paralyzed in fear, thinking, what should I do? Confront them? Run upstairs? Run outside? As I was thinking, they kicked the sunroom doors - I saw the doors splintering, and two men in masks emerge, one pointing at me, saying something. Right then, the alarm went off, and jolted me into action. I started running towards the front door. They ran after me, halfway through my front yard. But, by the time I made it to my neighbor's house, they had turned around and went back inside the house.
To this day, I have trouble sleeping if I'm home alone or with Alex while DH travels.
Anyone else?

OMG - SIX TIMES!
That's terrible.
I was never a victim of a home invasion, but when I was little our house got robbed. I never knew about until YEARS later when I was older.
I was also held up at gun point when I was working in retail. To this day, I don't like being home alone over night and I'm also very aware of who is around me when walking through parking lots.

Re: Speaking of home invasions...
OMG 6 times!
My apartment in Washington Heights was broken into but I was not home. My roommate was and was held at gunpoint in the middle of the night. They broke the lock, cut the phone line, and then startled her in the bedroom. They were looking for money from a particular person - it seemed like they were expecting someone else to be there. When they realized she had no idea who they were talking about, they kinda got freaked and just left.
I was in LI for the w/e so I came home to find a new lock on the door and the old one broken, and black stuff all over the walls (cops dusting for prints), and the phone not working. I didn't even put it together. She kept the truth from me for awhile because she didn't want me to be afraid.
