I have to say, I'm very surprised that someone answered "I have one but need to learn how to use it." I can't imagine why someone would purchase a gun and keep it in their home without learning how to properly and "safely."

just an assumption... but it could be her/his spouse's gun.

I voted that. My DH has one for work... i'm not a fan, but should probably learn how to use it.

Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...

The rise in home invasions doesn't really change my mind about having one. I'm a maybe vote just because it's something that we've discussed since moving in together but we wouldn't have one unless we both knew how to use it.

I'm also a maybe because we forget that a freaking bat's under the bed.

I do not have one in the house but I do know how to use one. My dad was a cop, so I used to go to the gun range and learned how to shoot.

The rise in home invasions might prompt me to invest in a home security system, but definitely not a gun.

I know how to use a handgun and a rifle. I live in Texas and the right to carry is strong here. With that said, I don't ever want a gun in my house. I don't need it and I don't want it.

If anything were to happen in my home, god forbid, I don't think that pulling out a gun would save us. If anything, it could aggravate the problem and take a robbery to murder.

Same here.

We have an alarm and now that we do- I can't imagine living WITHOUT one and don't know how I did it for so many years.

It's our protection and our safety net- I don't worry about a thing and there's no need for a gun. I grew up with guns in the house b/c of people in my family that are in Law Enforcement but I have no clue/desire/balls to try and use one myself!

I just arm the alarm and let it do its job.

I picked the first choice, however my firearms & ammo are locked & stored in seperate secure locations.
I will not keep one under my bed for fear of home invasion. We have an alarm system we use at night & we are pretty good about keeping our doors locked.
I think the instances would be so few, because most home invasion victims are taken by complete surprise that having a gun(unless you kept it out loaded) would actually be useful.

Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...

I have 2 small children. I wouldn't feel safe with a gun in the house - even if it were in a lockbox. My feeling is that the likelihood of my kids finding that gun may be higher than the likelihood of a home invasion.

Beyond that - even if someone did break into my home - I would need to locate the key, get the box, unlock it, get out the gun, load it (maybe) and have it ready to point, aim and shoot all before this person is upon me? And then I have to believe that I would be able to pull the trigger? I am not sure I could? If I hesitate and they disarm me - have I just given a dangerous criminal another weapon? And I hate to think of someone just squeezing that trigger in fear and panic - what if the person is not a foe? What if it is DH who forgot his keys and is slipping in the backdoor to avoid waking you? What if it is a robber and you shoot and MISS? Now you have succeeded in pissing off an already dangerous person.

Ugh. I hate thinking about it. Too much potential to go wrong. I am NOT cut out for gun use.

That's some of my biggest arguments about not wanting a gun in the house. To make it accessible and "useful" in a home invasion situation, it needs to be loaded and in a convenient place..... like somewhere that a toddler could get to.... Chat Icon

The risks of harming myself or my family is so much higher by having a gun in the house that for me, it far outweighs any perceived benefits.

We don't have any children so since all that happened my DH showed me how to use a shotgun and it's somewhat "ready" to go under the bed. The shell is not clicked in there or whatever. All I know is I hope I NEVER have to touch that thing. Chat Icon

my DH says that having an unloaded gun is useless.

he grew up in TX. he bought his first shot gun when he was 15 with money he saved from his allowance. he's been around them most of his life and you won't find a man more concerned about safety.

ETA: I grew up in Israel and my Dad had an Uzi under his bed, in addition to other weapons. he was in the army and neighborhood watch. neighborhood watches there are nothing like here. they ride around in vans in bullet proof vests and armed to the teeth. it is sad, but a reality.

Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...

DH & I both have fired all kinds of guns (pistols, rifles, shotguns, etc...) and have taken the NYS gun safety education course. I have my hunting license as well (although I have let it lapse since I do not hunt anymore).

Having said that, I would NEVER go out & buy a gun & learn how to use it just because there were home invasions. My guns are so well hidden under multiple lock & key that they would do me no good in an invasion anyway. We keep the ammo in a completely separate locked box from the guns, and with a double lock (a box with its own lock in a locker with a separate lock/combo lock). The bullets are also in unlabeled boxes so a lay person would have to use trial and error to figure out which bullet was for which gun.

Learning to use a weapon of any sort for the sole purpose of attempting to thwart an attack, IMO is dangerous. More accidents happen when a person buys a gun for protection than the protection it is supposed to provide. I truly believe that no matter what precautions you take a gun is a gun is a gun.

Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...

I chose "have a gun but need to learn how to use it." DH is a cop and owns a couple of guns. I need to apply for a gun permit in order for him to be able to take me to a range to teach me how to shoot. Haven't done that yet, but probably will. I feel that if there are guns being kept in my house I should probaby know how to handle them safely even though I'm 99.9% sure I will never have to use them. I am sure this is the case for most of the people who answered this way.

ITA! And that is exactly my reasoning for NEVER having a gun in my house. We have an alarm with motion detectors and a silent ambush code. I pray that if GOD FORBID we experienced a home invasion, police would act swiftly and take matters into their hands. It's not worth my fear of my children (or their friends that visit) finding a gun in my home.

I also know how to shoot a handgun and a rifle. I had a friend in college who taught me.

As far as pulling out a gun turning robbery into murder that would not happen. the minute someone entered my home uninvited, they would be shot(perhaps not a fatal shot, but incapacitating) That said, my husband would like a gun,I'm not so sure

Whoever answered that you have one and need to learn how to use it - WTH are you waiting for?

That is beyond irresponsible. I'm surely hoping that your SO knows how to use one?

I'm extremely anti-guns in MY home. We *may* have hunting rifles at some point or another for DH -- but never a handgun and our guns will always be LOCKED in a gun cabinet and the bullets will be stored in a separate locked compartment.

You're far more likely to get hurt by a gun in your home in the event of an intrusion than you are to ward off the intruder successfully.
