Speaking of places to come to Long Island

and I know this topic has probably been touched upon before, but why do you think there aren't more Trader Joe's around here?

I go to the one in Merrick about twice a month, and I see how bad the traffic is over there because of it, so do you think that has something to do with it? Towns just not wanting to deal with that?

Is it something that is just really super expensive to open?

It's not just here though.........I have friends and family that live in other areas of NYS that aren't as congested, who have complained about the same thing, especially if they reside in very nice towns with lack of grocery stores in general.

There are so many vacant shopping centers that I can think of that have space for TJ's though, that sit off the road a bit as well, so traffic wouldn't be that big of a deal IMO.

What are your thoughts?

Any other types of stores or places that you'd like to see come to Long Island? (I know we've talked about the restaurant/fast food places already LOL).

I would like a Fairway or Stew Leonard's Market to come to Eastern Suffolk! I don't know how likely that would be with Whole Foods & Uncle G's around the same area.

I don't live on LI any more, but when we thought about moving back I was very sad about moving away from Stew Leonards. Chat Icon The one in Danbury is 15 minutes away and I had my DD's 3rd birthday there. All my LI friends and family spent a lot of time shopping!

I love World Market, though they are a lot like Pier 1. I also love Wegmans.

As for Trader Joes, I like the one in Danbury more than the LI stores. But I also find I had to experiment because some of their things are hit or miss IMO. After a few years we have our staples and I find their fresh flowers are well priced and good quality.

I wonder about the trader Joe's and whole foods hype as well.
I think that a lot of their success has to do with location though. Markets like that would not survive in some of the lower income parts of Long Island.
Years ago a pier 1 opened in Levittown. After about a year or so it closed. At the time I thought this area is not right for pier 1 - too traditional. But now they would probably be very successful in the area.

I always wonder the same. We have two here but I remember going a few times in LI and never really saw the big deal. Nothing in there looked mildly appealing and those things I would buy were over priced and over the top. Whole Foods however I love as well as other green stores here. I loved Wild By Nature out in Huntington too.

But Trader joes, I just dont see the big deal *shrug*

I feel like Trader Joe's has a big hole on the south shore and the East End of Suffolk. I think they'd do well in Riverhead or Hampton Bays, and then for the South Shore, I could see somewhere like Medford or somewhere on Sunrise between Patchogue and West Islip.

Or, anywhere between say, Seaford and Babylon.

I heard awhile ago the mysterious TJ rumor that they were going to try to take over the spot where the old Nautilis Diner used to be.

I think it came from this site in fact.Chat Icon

I go through spurts with them.

I like a lot of their items, because I'm a FTWM, and it's easy to grab a bunch of things to heat up quickly during the week.

I do sometimes wonder how healthy that is though, and, it does add up much more quicker than the regular grocery store, even though many of their items are still quite reasonable.

I also think they are a good niche place if you are looking to have people over to entertain, and do an appetizer spread.

They were packed over the holidays and I suspect this is why.

I haven't been into the other grocery places mentioned, outside of Whole Paycheck when I used to work in the city.

I only ate their prepped foods then too.

I would LOVE that! I don't get too much from TJ, but for the few things I like, I hate having to go out of my way.

I have heard the buzz that Dave & Busters is either moving or on the verge of going out of business in Airport Plaza and Stew L's will take over that space. I have no idea if its true or not.

I don't see it either. I've been to several and though there are a few things that I really like and are great, I don't think they are as affordable as many tout and I wouldn't do all my grocery shopping there.

I think it's not always about the town not wanting a Trader Joe's though, but rather Trader Joe wanting to be in the town. They probably have done a lot of cost/benefit analysis and maybe that's why they aren't everywhere.

Re: Speaking of places to come to Long Island

I happen to like Trader Joe's and was thrilled when one opened up near me. Some of the stuff is great quality and a good value. In particular--

- Nuts
- Cheeses
- Chicken sausage
- Frozen veggies and fruits, especially organic
- Cookies, cereals, granola bars and other "dry goods" that contain no high fructose corn syrup
- Yogurts
- Organic milk
- Vitamins

Yes, they have tons of frozen appetizers and frozen processed foods, and some are really yummy. Are they healthy? Of course not, they have a million ingredients. Are they a good value? Maybe in an apples-to-apples comparison with supermarket brands, I never checked. But if you rely heavily on frozen convenience dinners for your weeknight meals, the cost is going to add up no matter where you get them from.

What I DON'T buy at Trader Joe's is the produce and the fresh meat. I have never been impressed with the quality of either.

I love TJ's! I find so much stuff there that I can not find anywhere else and every time I try something new I am impressed. I also find their prices to be extremely reasonable and a lot of stuff I get there is cheaper than the bigger chain supermarkets.

Re: Speaking of places to come to Long Island

The one in the Galleria in Westbury is NICE, better parking and I prefer it to the one in Merrick (not because of people or product) but space.

Re: Speaking of places to come to Long Island

I'd love for Trader Joe's to come to the North Shore of Queens, and I keep e-mailing corporate about that.
Closest one is in Forest Hills but getting there is a ******.
If I go, I go to the one in Plainview, a nice hike from Bayside.
I'd love Stew Leonards Market to come to LI as well. DH and I drive to the one in Norwalk every once in a while.

Waldbaums has such a hold on food markets that they make it very difficult for other markets to open up.
The closest Stop&Shop is a disgusting store in Little Neck.
I have no idea where the nearest King Kullen, Shop Rite are.
Thank G-d for Fairway in Douglaston, because Waldbaums sucks and so does Key Food.

I don't know what their business model is, but there are 3 stores in lower Westchester, which is crowded & expensive, but none in upper Westchester.

One of the ones in Westchester is right near a Mrs. Green's & a Freshmarket (new) & another is not far from Whole Foods.

On the other hand, we don't have as many large chain supermarkets. Shop Rite is a brand new thing up here. Chat Icon

So, I wonder if it is demographic based and their research tells them that consumers in certain areas are more apt to shop in specialty stores?

Also, looking at tthere stores in NJ, Westchester & LI it seems that they tend to open closer to metropolitan areas. ( although they go a little farther east on the North shore) I wonder if that is for distribution reasons.

I am not a huge fan, but they do seem popular & I don't think it is a bad business to have in your area. I ssut don't usually go, b/c we like to do the majority of our shopping in 1 place (Super Stop & Shop near DH's office) ad then if we need other things, it is usually fish & produce, which I prefer from Whole Foods.

I have family in California who love Trader Joe's produce, but they say you have to go early. They may just have better local produce there too, because it is California.

Re: Speaking of places to come to Long Island

There was a rumor that Trader Joes had wanted to come into the shopping center across from Willowwood in Wantagh, but wasn't approved because of traffic concerns.

I don't remember a Pier 1 in Levittown, but confused by other poster saying that it didn't last because it's a low income area. I live in Levittown and I wouldn't consider it a "low income area." I think any of those type of stores would do really well here.
