Special Ed elementary school programs

Does anybody know of any schools that have special ed programs for K-? besides each district's program? I have a meeting with the elementary school my DD should be starting in September to review what kinds of programs they expect to have for next year and to determine whether or not they will be appropriate for DD. This is an informal meeting, before we go to CSE. I want to be informed about what is around besides the BOCES, AHRC and UCP programs. I know there are several in Nassau, but I am pretty far east for DD to realisitically attend those schools. I have to imagine that there are schools out here, east of Huntington. I'm looking for something anywhere between Commack and Riverhead...I think those are realistic distances for her to travel for school.

Re: Special Ed elementary school programs

I would see what your district has available first (which you are planning on anyway). Also, they may have to almost create a program or service for your child if it's not in place already. they have to abide the IEP. That said, many districts really try to accommodate children in district before sending them out as it is usually much more cost-effective for them to keep the child in the home district. Also, some schools within the district have different programs, but it's not necessarily the child's home elementary school, but it's still the same district. KWIM? i teach self-contained and many of my kids while they live IN the district, they are technically zoned for another elem. school, but they come to my school because my school has the program they need.

Also, is this the same child that has the Section 504 plan? I have never heard of a district sending a child to an outside setting with a 504 - outside placements are usually for very, very impaired children or severely emotionally disturbed and those children typically have IEPs, not 504's.

In terms of recommendations I don't have any for you, but you would have to see what CSE says in terms of an out of district placement. otherwise, if you choose an outside school, you will be paying the tuition and typically it's not cheap.

In the public school district I teach in, we have regular kindergarten classes where children with 504 plans or IEPs are placed in. these kids usually just need accommodations or a few related services like OT or speech, but can be mainstreamed all day.

then we have kids in regular K classes that receive resource room services and/or related services, but can still manage to mainstream most of the day.

we don't currently have a co-teach/inclusion class (one gen. ed. teacher and one special education teacher teaching together all day), but that depends on what comes up from CPSE, we have had them in the past.

then we have a self-contained classes with a special ed. teacher and a teacher assistant and aide(s) as necessary. these are usually multi-grade (i.e. K-1) and cap at 12 students. these students are typically well-below grade level, but can learn, they just need a much slower pace and a small group.

next we have an even smaller self-contained class with a max of either 6 or 8 students. this model has a special education teacher and usually a couple of teaching assistants and 1:1 aides. the kids in the class are typically severely impaired, often autistic and require intense instruction involving specialized techniques such as ABA or PROMPT.

if after that, your kid doesn't fit into that model, then the district usually sends them out to a BOCES or private.

Hope this helps!!!!!

Other than what you mentioned, DDI has a few locations in Suffolk.

No, the 504 is for my 2nd grader (she just has attention deficits), but is otherwise typical.

I'm looking now for my soon-to-be-Kindergartener. She has Angelman Syndrome, and she is severely impaired. She is scoring 3+ standard deviations below the mean in PT, OT & speech. Plus, developmentally, is only about 2 years old right now. She currently attends DDI in Ronkonkoma, but they only have a program for her through Pre-K. The autism programs are really not appropriate for her, although she does respond well to ABA.

Thank you so much for all your great information.

There is a special needs charter school out east (not that Riverhead one). The name is escaping me at the moment though.

There is the Eastern Boces and I think DDI does K. But look into the other districts around you. If they have a program that fits your needs, the will cross district you. I know specifically in my district, 2 years ago they created a new 6:1:1 class for some children that had severe impairments that wouldn't fit into our ABA classroom. I believe one of the children has Angelman Syndrome as well. I think there are a few districts that do the same.

We are in the same situation as you. Ny ds was at ucp for the past 2 years. This has been amazing for him. Next year they recommended him to move on. Pt/Ot/st sores are low but academically he is ready for more. We are looking at viscardi and little village. But i would love to hear of any other programs too.

I know it's not in the exact area you're looking but the school I used to work at is wonderful. It's called the School for Language and Communication Development and the elementary school is in Glen Cove. I know it's a bit of a drive, but the program actually runs through to high school and they're in the process of trying to open a college.
