Speech related question????(reversing sounds)
Does/did your DC reverse sounds in words? For Example Peyton will say PUCK instead of CUP and she calls my friend BAGGY instead of GABBY. She is 20 months. Is this normal? DD#1 never did this.

Re: Speech related question????
I'm not sure if it's normal or not. My dd calls my mom Maggie instead of Grammy. I think it would be considered normal for 20 months and maybe after 2 talk to your ped. about an evaluation.

Re: Speech related question????(reversing sounds)
My son does this but he is speech and language delayed. The OT said it has something to do with motor planning??? I hope one of the other ladies knows more - sorry

Re: Speech related question????(reversing sounds)
I spoke to a speech therapist about my DD (30 months old) who seems to switch b/f sounds (i.e. bridge for fridge, bix for fix) and he said not to worry about it yet. He said to model the correct word without correcting her so she can hear the word correctly, but not to make her self-conscious about it or feel that its wrong. She has been doing this for a few months, but she her language skills are very strong overall, so I try to continue to model the correct pronunciation without correcting her. I teach second grade and hear lots of kids pronouncing sounds incorrectly, so I try to just look at it as a developmental thing, and that she will probably stop doing it at some point, and if not, she'll get some assistance from a speech therapist, etc.

Re: Speech related question????(reversing sounds)
my DS is 21 months and does this. I definitely noticed it, but haven't worried about it yet.
I see what the OT is saying about it POSSIBLY being related to motor planning..... but for example, I AM an OT and I notice that my DS has great motor skills, doesn't seem to have any motor planning issues whatsoever, etc..... so IMO I don't think it's anything I am going to worry about just yet.

Re: Speech related question????(reversing sounds)
Cailen will be 3 in April, is highly advanced speech wise, and still does this - he definitely did this last year at 20 months - and didn't speak as much yet - his language explosion was after his 2nd bday. I would not worry at all yet!

Re: Speech related question????(reversing sounds)
Thanks for all the input! I am not too worried, she has alot of words and will repeat almost everything you tell her to say. It just seemed funny to me that with certain words she reversed the sounds. She can say CANDY but not CUP, so I know she can make the "C" sound KWIM? DD#1 was a late talker(around 2) and never did this.
