Re: Spelling (WORD) Tips
I totally don't care on the internet, but in person, i hate when people say "supposebly, or supposevely", instead of "supposedly"....I'm not ever sure if I spelled that correctly but I know I use it correctly when i speak :)

I think it's funny when people who are talking about how much more intelligent they are than others proceed to spell stuff incorrectly in their post.
yes this is much worse than the average bad speller.

Re: Spelling (WORD) Tips
I use dictionaries. Spell-check is not reliable enough for my purposes.
I also keep a copy of my APA manual to help me with grammar, spelling and punctuation. I think it is fine not to know something. Taking an extra minute or two out of my time to make sure information is presented correctly, is not an inconvenience for me. It is a preference.
As an educator of students with speech and language as well as academic delays and emotional disturbance, I, like a previous poster, do not penalize my students for misspelled words. I correct them and my students write unfamiliar words in their own dictionaries for practice. They struggle enough and I do not need to destroy their spirits when getting them to hold a pencil is pure torture.
I think educators and parents need to be diligent in helping their children with spelling. I learned to spell without spell check as did my parents and siblings. It can be done. It takes a lot of work (more for some) but it can be done.
There are many skills besides spelling that are being lost with increasing technology. It is surprising how many people cannot make change without the button on a cash register that tells them exactly the amount to return to a customer. That is a primary grade skill. I have seen cashiers go into a tizzy when you hand them a 20 and a nickel for something that costs$10.01.
(Rant over and I apologize for going slightly off topic)

Re: Spelling (WORD) Tips
I visited my DH in his classroom for a project that his kids had done. They had written a short paper on why they like one thing better than the other. Guests were invited into the room and they were asked to read each paper and write a short reply in the back of each paper. One TEACHER wrote in all the kids books "u did gr8". I was horrified and pointed it out to DH. He said she does it all the time, even in her own room.

That is rediculous! I thought the kids just did things like that because of IMs and text messaging. I can't believe a teacher write that on a student's paper. That makes me angry!

Re: Spelling (WORD) Tips
I do not mind mispellings as I have typos all the time - but I agree that using words incorrectly really bugs me also.
For example: loose vs. lose
She needs to LOSE weight. and Those pants are really LOOSE on her
but I know most people aren't as OCD as I am...

A "whole NOTHER" bothers me.
Apparently, it is accepted, but I think it sounds ridiculous. I can honestly say, I never use it in written or spoken language. I use "another" or "a whole other."

and we're educated adults who should be open to learning correct usage, no? i mean, even if our responses are't being graded, we can still learn from our mistakes.

I will agree. Many posters on this topic did not specify if what annoys them were web-site or non-internet issues. I am certainly bothered more by non-internet misuses of language whether spoken or written.

That bothers me as well. It is proper use of articles, which should be understood. I am not bothered by internet grammar. I make so many mistakes, b/c I am on the internet so much.
A few things get to me a lot (in Spoken English)- "I seen him do that", "Did you do that yet?" "We was there" etc. I mean that stuff is basic usage.
Even though incorrect spoken English drives me a bit crazy, b/c I correct it all day long, at times you just have to step back and say language is about communication (IMO) and I understand what is being said, so in the end it really doesnt matter. Why embarrass someone? After all American English is incorrect, so who are we to even speak? But again, I teach ESL and they are low levels and I want them to get confidence to speak. They will work out the kinks later.
