Re: Sperm donor has 70 kids and counting...

My thinking on this is that for the future gene pool you are really pushing one set of gene through to the next generation - so even if none of his children marry each other, the likelihood that his grandchildren or cousins might marry is higher. If he is donating to one or two local sperm banks then he is available to a more local set of families. Yes, some meet at college and move away from their original community, but others might not. Maybe the sperm donor to these 70 kids is incredible and has "perfect" genes but maybe not. If you look at some religious groups that intermarry and have large families there are some genetic diseases that have come up and they are particularly sad/painful.
I think it is incredibly hard and painful to have to go through IVF. I feel for those familes so much. I really wish they could all have their take home babies instantly. But to me I look at it as a pure genetics issue.
I T A!!! it's not a good thing..

There is another one in California who has 150 kids. IMHO these doctors really have a responsibility that they are shirking by permitting so many live births with one donor. There needs to be a registry of successful births tied to donors and once a number, I am not sure how many, 20? 30? are born, then that person can no longer donate and no longer can have their DNA used to make additional IVF children.
i agree... OR the sperm taker signs something that states they are aware that this father has x amount of kids out there already.

I don't think there should have been any type of meeting or reconnection at all.
People may disagree with me but its amazing on how many lives and families were blessed because of this man. it was anonymous and should've remained that way. does not matter if its 50 or 100 children produced

My concern is for when the kids grow up, and possibly meet each other and hook up. They'll really be 1/2 brother/sisters.
What are the realistic chances of that happening?
These kids are probably spread out across a country with a population of nearly 315 million.
see now i would think of this as being a local occurrence. man donates sperm to a local sperm bank. woman sperm shops at local dr's offices or sperm banks (IDK how this method totally works).... but in my head it's all local. I thought of this happening too. do they really fly sperm in? don't all major cities or what have you, have sperm banks somewhere???
The woman said she found him via Google and lives across the country - I'm thinking this is predominantly not a local transaction.
And while major cities might have banks I doubt there are many in the flyover states.

But what is the harm if both parties want to meet?
Amazing to see how the children look so much like him.

both parties would have to understand and be ok with it that there could be consequences that can damage current relationships etc. This man donated sperm knowing at the time it was anonymous. all I'm saying is sometimes curiosity kills the cat.

Re: Sperm donor has 70 kids and counting...
I'm not concerned from a genetic standpoint because this is nothing compared to Asia.
If you know the story of Genghis Khan:
An international group of geneticists studying Y-chromosome data have found that nearly 8 percent of the men living in the region of the former Mongol empire carry y-chromosomes that are nearly identical.
But from a personal standpoint, I'm assuming that those with donor sperm understood the risks going in & I'm sure would take the steps to explain their child's conception to them, along with the risks of marrying someone else with the same origin.

I was thinking this also.. I would let my child know this information so she would take precautions on who she gets involved with.. So I guess its not as risky.. But what about the next generation or the one after that? It can be risky..
