Re: spin off-- pumping gas

I leave her in the car to pump gas. I am right there the whole time. I DO admit that I always lock the doors while I'm pumping though.

Re: spin off-- pumping gas

I think they meant leaving the kid in the car to go inside to pay for the gas? I can't imagine anyone taking their kid out of the car and trying to hold them while pumping gas. Or even making them stand there while you pump. I can barely do it all by my lonesome without spewing gas all over the place Chat Icon

I will admit, I only go to full serve now that I have DS. But he is only 4 weeks old, so I guess part of it is being a paranoid new mommy. As he gets older, I will probably just lock the doors and pay by credit card

Re: spin off-- pumping gas

We always pay by CC, and leave DC in the car with the windows closed (at least the ones on the pump side). It's much safer to have DC in the car with the windows closed while at a gas station. If the windows are open, or they are outside with you, they can breathe the gas fumes.

I always leave DD in the car -- can't imagine taking her out to pump!

I pay by cc at the pump. I don't lock the doors tho - I am standing right there.

I can't imagine trying to hold a child while pumping gas! They are always in the car, I get out, and I actually lock it. I have this bizarre fear that someone will hop in my car from the other side to carjack it. So they are in the car, but its locked while I pump the gas.

Re: spin off-- pumping gas

I leave him in the car - if I had to take him out - we would never have gas in the car.

Since it's been nice out - I open the passenger back door and play peek-a-boo with him. Chat Icon

I've gotten out and pumped gas with DD in the car. The car is off and I am right there. I pay with a CC at the pump.

Re: spin off-- pumping gas

I always pay by CC at the pump, but I leave her in the car. I'm paranoid to take my eyes off of her, but one time I was being too paranoid, didn't pay enough attention to the gas pump and sprayed gas on myself.Chat Icon So now I just relax a little, I'm literally standing right there and the doors are locked.

Re: spin off-- pumping gas

Here's a little article about toluene, a poisonous chemical found in gasoline...

http://healthychild.org/resources/chemical-pop/toluene/

Keeping the door/window of your car open while refueling allows DC to breathe more of that in... Keeping the window/door closed minimizes the amount of toluene they may be breathing.

It is also found in gasoline, car exhaust, and cigarette smoke. These are the most likely sources of exposure to toluene for children.

Longterm or Delayed Health Effects

* This chemical is considered an Unclassifiable Carcinogen by the World Health Organization, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or another agency.
* Neurotoxin = Can harm brain and central nervous system
* Development Toxicant = Can interfere with normal development of a fetus or child

Same for us. Mostly due to gas vapors.
