Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
Just a silly question- and I think I asked this last storm- but I forget. Bottled water. Why? If you have a well or pump I can see it, because if you lose power, nothing to pump the water- but if you don't and if the power goes out- won't the taps work?
I stood in Target today and was like- I NEED to get bottled water. Storm and all. Then I was like- wait, why? Because you are 'supposed' to. But then i started thinking- my taps should still work, no? So I skipped it- since we don't drink bottled water normally.
Again-maybe it's a dumb question- but I am stumped. If anyone can explain I'd finally feel enlightened!

i think its because you wont know what the condition of the tap water will be... Just because its flowing doesnt mean its ok to drink.

Right - if the power is lost to any filtration systems or if the ground is flooded from so much rain that extra contaminants spill in because the rainwater is pooling... something like that. I am making this up so don't quote me, but it's something like that - something to do w/ contamination. I've had too much coffee.

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
I'm usually pretty well stocked normally, so I don't go bananas. If it's the end of the week and I am due for my weekly shop.. I'll actually skip my normal shop altogether (I don't like the idea of getting stuck with crap that might go bad) and just grab enough shopping for a few days and go out again after the storm.
I also make sure I've got plenty of booze. The idea of being in the house with my 2 kids fighting and no television, XBox or computer to distract them requires copious amounts of wine. Plus we generally wind up having people over or going to neighbors/friends houses during/after this kind of thing.
And gas in our cars. My BIL is a survivalist.. and has enough food and supplies for an army (literally - he planned on our entire extended family living with him if 'the grid goes down') so I know if shit got REAL I could just go to his house.

Charge my cell. Make sure flashlights have batteries. Some extra snacks and food in the house.
That's it. I don't go crazy.

If it looks like its going to be a direct hit, we are going to try to sandbag the basement windows this time. We didn't for Irene and had about a foot of water down there.
I also fill my car up with gas and then park it a few blocks from my house (out of the flood zone).
We always have flashlights, food and water so we are good there, I am going to pick up some non perishable milk for DD just in case.
Same here. We did all of these things for Irene and are glad we did. Although we were spared, many of our neighbors had flooded basements. And thank God that hit at low tide. Had it been high tide, we would have not been as lucky.
Other than that, we'll just make sure to have plenty of food and bottled water available for us and the kids.
If this hits at a full moon high tide I'm screwed lol

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
1.Make big ice blocks to help keep freezer good. 2. Keep things charged that need to be charged. 3. Put patio furniture and outdoor things away. 4. Make sure I have batteries for the radio. 5. And I for some reason need a clean house, I guess I want my house to be clean if blows or floats away.

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
These are the only things I do above normal: Top off our gas tanks and make sure the propane tank for the grill is full Stock up on a few extra gallons of water Get some extra snacks Make sure we have batteries for the flashlights Make sure we have cash on hand just in case I don't go nuts. What for? We live by the water, so I will probably put the outdoor furniture away for the season, which I would do anyway.

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
we had no power for days after irene, so i will be prepared again this time. no pwer with 3 kids sucks.
-case of water -freeze some soda bottled full of water to keep in the fridge and freezer to keep it cold -during irene i kept a cooler in my kitchen. i put the milk, cheese sticks, yogurt etc. in there for the kids. (i have an extra fridge in my basement so all the food i was planning to put in the cooler if we lost power i put in there so i didn't have to open my fridge) -charge phones -battery/flashlight check -charge all the kids games and portable DVD player -fill cars up with gas
ohh... and now might be a good time for my dh to put away all the stuff in the backyard.

Am I the only crazy one worried about losing the hundreds of ounces of frozen bm I have in my deep freezer? I will cry if I have to throw that out - its gluten/dairy free.

Re: Spin Off to Hurricane Sandy
We had no power for a week after Irene, so I am worried.
I stocked up on bottled water and shelf-stable milk boxes tonight. I have a 3 year old and 1 year old so milk is really important.
We'll make sure all our electronics are charged. We always have plenty of batteries for flashlights.
We have a full tank of propane so we can grill.

get a generator We were out of power for 7 days with Irene -- total life saver - worth every penny! We got gas for it, and got lanterns, flashlights, battery operated nightlights for the nighttime when we turn it off.

Where did you find the milk boxes? I couldn't find any in Target tonight. Where is it usually kept?

They are by the baking stuff. They already had no whole milk ones, I bought the remaining packages of 2% milk. This was at the Levittown Stop-and-Shop. They only had chocolate and strawberry boxes left.

My parents got one after we flooded with the storm in oct about 10 yrs ago. Best thing ever. Their basement Floods so they need it for the limbs down there. They are the inky ones on the block wih electric. Its kinda sad. Of coirse they offer for all the neighbors to come store food and watch tv, etc. We might get one soon. Just in case.

I got it at whole foods, they had plenty. Bottled water too. Same last year. I don't think anyone thinks to go there for this stuff.
