Spinoff - calling in sick

How often do you call in sick?

Do you call in sick for the heck of it because you just don't feel like working, only when you are on the brink of death, or just feeling a little under the weather?

I have been at my current job for 6 years and have only called in sick once, I had strep. I was planning on coming in but when they caught wind I had strep and wasn't on antibiotics for a full 24 hours they suggested I stay home.

Re: Spinoff - calling in sick

I often call in sick when I have a migraine because they are horrible. But in general, I can work from home so if I'm a litte under the weather, I do that rather than take a sick day.

I did however use all my sick days already this year Chat Icon but I do only get five per year.

Re: Spinoff - calling in sick

I have to have stuff coming out of both ends to keep me out of work. I definately wouldn't call in for something that I can live with. I once got about 5 people in my office sick with the flu. It circled around and I got it a second time. I still laugh with them to this day about being the host.

I call in sick when I am really sick. I know it is difficult for my boss to get a relief teacher, so I always think of that.

I only call in sick when it's really bad. We have to use PTO when we are sick.

Frankly, that would have really p!ssed me off.

In general I think people don't take sick days as often as they should.

Where do you think I got sick from originally? Probably someone in the office. None of my family had it.

ETA: It wasn't the immaculate conception of the flu.

Yeah, I don't understand when people who ARE sick have PAID sick days, don't take them AND instead come in and spread germs Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't agree. I know a handful of people in my office who would use a sick day even when they don't have any left for a hang nail.

There are people who abuse it, but I think generally people tend not to take sick days when they should. If you are not feeling well, you shouldn't go to work and possible infect others. The work culture of this country discourages people from taking sick days, vacation days, etc, which is why many feel guilty when they DO take a day.

Re: Spinoff - calling in sick

I call in sick maybe 2 or 3 times a year, it is usually b/c I don't feel well. Very rarely I will call in sick just to stay home. I have done that, maybe twice since I have been working at my current job (3 years)

Absolutely. And while there are definitely people who abuse it, too many people (at least in my office) see NOT taking sick days as a badge of honor.

It's not cool to infect your co-workers!

Ultimately I think it boils down to individual work ethics in combination with job raking. People at my company who are in "corporate" with me are never out unless it's something related with their kid or on the brink of pneumonia. While the retail aspect of it would take a day if half a raindrop fell on their head causing them to have a migraine Chat Icon

I will call in if I am feverish sick, when I have bad migraines and sometimes I just need a mental health day to clear my head and regroup so to speak.

In my case it was more of a software deadline that I couldn't push back and it needed to get done. It wasn't that I was going to get a pat on the back we needed to get a release out. No excuses. In the software business we have a very strict schedule and goals must be met.

Re: Spinoff - calling in sick

i do not feel bad calling in sick if i really am sick. If I think I might be contagious, I definitely stay home. I remember the guy who sits next to me was SO sick (sneezing and coughing everywhere) and came into work the week before my wedding. I was ******.

I get 5 sick days a year, which I always wind up using. Use em or lose em....so I use em!

And I don't think "I do it b/c everyone else does it" is a good excuse. If you are sick, STAY HOME!

I think I take 1 -2 sick days a year. We never had a set amount before, so it was sort of an honor system.

Now we are told no more than 6 per year, but I don't see them as "use them or loose them" days like vacation. They are meant to be taken only if you are indeed sick.

I have too much work to do to be taking gratutious sick days.

Re: Spinoff - calling in sick

I don’t call in sick very often, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I don’t like to have someone sitting across from me who is sniffling and snotty, and surely I don’t want to be that person…so I stay out if I am snotty or sniffly.
