Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

Are you a little miffed that you aren't getting one? Or, do you feel it's a fair decision?

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

DH and I are getting one - but we are close to the point of NOT getting one.

Yes we make good $, but owning a home on LI and our killer student loans do not leave us rich! That $1200 will come in handy (we are going to either pay down our mortgage or some student loans)

i think everything should be on a regional scale. people will argue "well thats where you choose to live" - well i think that the government should want people to live where they grew up and where their families are. The demand for gas may be lower if people didnt move away (and have to travel further for work, to see family, etc.).

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

somewhat fair to me and DH..however, I would have like to get the $300 for my DS

Even though we make the $$, we still have lots of expenses for DS

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

at times i think it would be better if they adjusted things based off the average salarty in each state or cost of living in a peticular state

But then i think about costs that don't change - like college and it is al ot harder in the midwest to pay for private school and that a lot more kids there look to the military to pay for school - i know there is financial aid - but $150,000 - 200,000 in debt for college is a lot of mortgages in the midwest

so i don't know - we do ok but by no means are we well off. I understand some people not getting a rebate but that is the really wealthy. But in the north east making over $175,000 is not very well off - housing costs are so much compared to other places - in the midwest (non-city) you are rich making that much

But, I'm fine with it. As poor as I may feel and with what little DH and I have (no house, no kids, no vacation home, no brand-name anything, one five-year old car...), the rebate is for less fortunate people.

LOL Same here. We would have put it towards one of our current projects...so it actually would have been used in the way that it's intended. C'est la vie.

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

although I think everyone can USE the check - I get the reasoning behind why they did it the way they did. That being said we are still feeling the crunch just like others.

Our groceries, gas, and other living expenses are more expensive than they used to be as well so I think the check would be a benefit to us as well.

I just think maybe its a little easier for us to absorb the higher costs...but it doesn't mean that we aren't feeling it.

I haven't looked if I qualify but assuming I don't...

I'd rather have the government keep the check & do something regarding the gas prices. Since that's unlikely to happen with an oilmen in the White House, I'll say...sure I'd like a check too. I'd spend it in New Orleans, where it would do the most good.Chat Icon

no, not annoyed by it. We would of saved it anyway. Don't know how it will affect our taxes next year so it's good to just save it either way.

When I first heard, I was miffed.

Then - somewhere I read - it is sort of an "advance" on next year's tax return so I felt a little better - it's not like people are getting $$ with nothing in return...

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

I am not mad but i disagree, the whole point of the check is to stimulant the economy. Someone like myself would be able to do just that.

It's a tax break that was supposed to go into effect in 2009 that is taking effect in 2008.

If you weren't going to get it in 2008 because you make too much money, you aren't getting it in 2009 either.

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

I had a really good freelance year that put us over...but it was really slow in the beginning of the year so I would have liked to have it now.

I get it, I do...but the cost of living here is just so stark in contrast to other states.

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

i think it's crap..the whole premise of it. It's supposed to give us money to put back into the economy so why not give it to everyone?

Also, it's crap because I don't think it will do anything for the economy since the oil companies are sucking the life out of everyone (who isn't a stockholder)

I wouldn't say miffed. It annoys me to no end that COL isn't included in the calculations, so a family making $200,000 in Omaha probably isn't struggling as much as the same family would on Long Island.

The whole thing is stupid, it's not going to stimulate the economy enough to make a difference. That's what pizzes me off about the whole thing.

ITA- I think this is the dumbest financial plan I ever heard. And we even got the rebate since I was on maternity for most of last year. But we are just putting it in our savings account, not spending it so its really not going to achieve its goal on our end.

I think the government takes too much of my money already -- but I think the entire idea is stupid.

There were better steps that could have been taken to help boost the economy.

I honestly don't care that I'm not getting anything.

I'm not miffed at all. I wouldn't mind the extra cash, especially with baby coming.

I think the idea was ridiculous to begin with. Now, we are being "advised" on how to spend it.

I am upset about it. I think they need to adjust for cost of living. 200k does not go far in Northern VA.

I don't really feel that we are living it up that we should not get the rebate.

I also don't see how this will stimulate the economy. Didn't we try this unsuccessfully already?

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

Not miffed about the rebate. It's more that I feel like I pay entirely too much in taxes to begin with. I work EXTREMELY hard to make the money that I do and I hate that I don't even get to see half of it!

Re: Spinoff - to those who don't qualify for the rebate

I was a bit at first.

It's not like DH and I are millionaires. Not even remotely close. And we pay taxes just like everyone else does - why shouldn't we be entitled to the same rebate?

Although., now that I know if may be deducted from next years return I am glad I didn't get it. Once less thing to worry about.
