Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

My friend really thinks she is a great cook. I think she is missing her taste buds. She doesn't brag about anything - except her cooking. And people (like me) don't want to burst her bubble - so we kind of nod and smile when she shoves some foul concoction in our mouths.

So - do you think you are a good cook?
How do you know if you are or not?

ETA: I think I am a good cook... but I cook to my own tastes. I figure a lot of people won't like my food - but it does seem to go pretty fast as potlucks and such. And I get a lot of requests to make 'this' or 'that'.

I'm not, but DW is. I know this, because everyone who eats her food raves about it (including me, of course.... Chat Icon )

There are certain things I can cook well, but I would never consider myself a "good cook".

I know I'm not because my DH is a MUCH better cook. He and I could make the same exact dish, following the same exact recipe and somehow his would always come out better. That's how I know.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

I know I'm a good cook. I have very tough, honest critics in my family and circle of friends. They've told me when i've missed the mark, but that's very rare. I love to cook!

I know I am a good cook, whether or not that sounds conceited I don't know. I too have tough critics who would tell the truth. My parents are big into cooking and so are me and DH. We have been into cooking forever and have been watching shows and reading Bon Appetit for as long as I can remember.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

I am a very good cook. People always request I bring things to their houses and people always ask me for the recipes. I used to cater small parties and everyone always paid me, so it couldn’t have been that bad Chat Icon Someday I'd like to open a café.

The funny thing is, though, I rarely eat my own cooking because I am a breadgitarian... Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

I think I'm a good cook... FH likes my cooking and he's a VERY picky eater.

I can't bake though... following exact measurements is something I just can't do.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

I don't cook much, so I can't claim to be a good cook. DH does most of the cooking, so I don't get much practicing in.

I can follow recipes though.

I am exactly the same. My husband, on the other hand is totally gourmet. He makes an awesome steak-he is great with sauces. He also loves to look at cookbooks(like teh French Laundry CB) and twist the recipes to his own liking. I rarely cook

I like to think I am a decent cook. My dad is one of the worst critics & he loves my dishes. On the other hand, I am a great baker!

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

I cooked for 40 people at my BIL's birthday party 2 years and was told I should be a caterer. I, also, cooked for my grandson's Baptism last year and people asked who the caterer was. I look at myself as an ordinary cook, nothing special. I have, however, developed a skill where I can see a commercial for some restaurant and be able to make the food they picture. I like to cook and love watching people enjoy themselves. Maybe I am better than I think I am.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

I make some things pretty well.

But I'm not delusional about my cooking skills! As DH has said, "You're starting to get good at this." Coming from someone who can cook pretty well, I'll take that as a compliment Chat Icon.

PS - Jeannie, say that you have food allergies. It gets you out of eating some not so tasty things.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

I can follow a simple recipe without too many things going on at the same time. I feel like I would be good if I put more time into it...DH loves to cook. He invents his own dishes and he's really efficient about it so I never get to practice.

He'll cook for a couple of hours on Sunday and have all our food for the week made.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

Nope, I am a horrible cook! All of my stuff is either under or over cooked. I have a tendency to burn things. Baking sheets don't stand a chance in my house. I can't make rice and can barely even boil the water.

BUT, I can bake a mean pie! Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Are you a good cook?

I think I'm a good cook, and my victims seem to enjoy it too. I'm good at following recipes. I don't really like improvising but sometimes I'll experiment. I prefer to follow recipes.
