Spinoff: Are you a Proponent of the Death Penalty?
I personally find it an atrocious and overly self-righteous, morally incompetent act. Murder for murder will never make sense in my mind. It's just my humble opinion though. What do you think?

Re: Spinoff: Are you a Proponent of the Death Penalty?
I believe once you have made the pre-meditated, conscious decision (not manslaughter) to murder someone, you have forfeited your right to live.
Of course, every case is different & evidence needs to be heard but there are certainly henious crimes that warrant it. I also think rape of a child warrants it as well.
My concern is I believe the actual act itself slowly strips the humanity in the people responsible for administering it.
also - calling someone self-righteous isn't exactly a humble opinon but self-rigteous in itself, no?

Yes, I am a proponent of the death penalty, on a case by case basis.
But in all, I have no problem with it.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a Proponent of the Death Penalty?
I don't associate the death penalty with "an eye for an eye". If that was the case, the method of death wouldn't be lethal injection etc.
However, I do believe there are cases where the death penalty is perfectly justified.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a Proponent of the Death Penalty?
Yes - I have seen many cases where defendants have committed such atrocious acts against other humans that there is no other justifiable sentence. Some defendants who are sentenced to life are still such a menance in prison. They realize that they are in their for life and they have nothing to lose and still cause havoc once they are imprisoned. In some cases, I think the death penalty is too kind...what some people have done to other people, they deserve to be tortured, just like they have tortured others. I know that sounds harsh, but when you look at families that have been literally destroyed b/c of the actions of others and knowing that a victim suffered tremendously b/c of the actions of a defendant, the death penalty is a lenient sentence.

This is how I feel. It also bothers me that we are one of very few westernized countries that still have the death penalty.

Anti-death penalty. It is a flawed system that should not be used IMO

I'm on the edge with this... part of me thinks that they should die, part of me isn't because I'm so afraid for someone who is wrongly accused.

My thoughts exactly. Until our justice system suddenly becomes perfect, I can not be totally on board.

I'm all for it! This is why we have repeat offenders, they are not scared of the punishment.
Its definetly a case by case thing.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a Proponent of the Death Penalty?
I'm on the fence... In cases where a child is the victim, my first instinct is kill 'em. But for the most part I am against it. I just feel like it's not my place to play God with someone's life and decide to end their life. While the murderer made the decision for their victim, 2 wrongs don't make a right.

ITA - I don't trust our justice system to be fair at all. Too many mistakes already made. Studies show that capital punishment is not a deterrent.
Plus I think it violates our 8th amendment right from protection from cruel and unusual punishment. I think murder is cruel, so therefore so is capital punishment.

Cruel and Unusual Punishment refers to torturing or public humiliation. Remember, the Bill of Rights were created over 200 years ago. I don't think, they ever anticipated some of the heinous crimes that are commited against humanity now a days.
That being said, Prision is not punishment for most people. Three Hots and a Cot is a lot better then being on the street. Free Cable, and Education, Counseling and Medical Services are available. Add, in a Gym and the ability to Network, why wouldn't someone want to stay in prision?
Take away all of those things and create Prisions the way they are in Asian and many Latin American Countries, and I think you will see a decrease in prisioners.
The United States is too easy on their criminals. The Prision system is one of the biggest budget issues each year. Comparatively, more money is spent on a prisioner then on a student in Public School. I think the last stat that I read was that it cost 45,000 per prisioner each year.
That being said, I support the Death Penalty on a case by case situation.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a Proponent of the Death Penalty?
Stacey - we are polar opposites on this.
Interpretation of the Constitution is subjective - it's been flexible and just as the guillotine was commonplace in 18th Century France, it is banned now. There are 12 US states and almost every nation in the EU that consider the death penalty cruel and unusual and the US Supreme Court has ruled it cruel and unusual as punishment for convicted felons under 18 or mentally ill.
So many studies show the disproportionate numbers of minorities who are on death row, it points out the ongoing problem in our society.
As for repeat offenders, is it that prison is not a deterrent or that a small percentage of criminals commit a large percentage of crimes. (which I believe is the rationale behind the three strikes laws) I want to believe that rehabilitation is the answer for the non-repeat offenders.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a Proponent of the Death Penalty?
I believe in some cases having to live with what you have done would be worse then dying, however in the cases of true sociopath's I say death. Why pay for them to stay alive if they will never have any remorse.
EDITED to add that ANYBODY who is put to death should be guilty. We have the technology to make sure innocent people aren't dying. If there is ANY doubt to their guilt then no...we should not use it, but I am all for mental institutions for the truely insaine. I feel like we don't use them enough
