Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I was reading the elephant thread and noticed a few people said how it is inappropriate for teachers to friend former students on FB.
I am 10+ years removed from HS but I am friends with some old teachers and even my HS principal on FB. I don't think it's inappropriate at all.
I would say being friends with CURRENT students is inappropriate, but FORMER students I think is different.
Is anyone else friends with former teachers or if you're a teacher, former students, on FB?

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
No, I'm not. I'm out 25 years now??
I'm on a FB messageboard for my town & find it odd that one of the teachers actively posts & gives info on other teachers. Then again, he was "friend" teacher.
Honestly I look at it & think "Go find friends your own age."
I see nothing wrong with reaching out to a teacher, wishing them well & letting them know they made a difference if it's warranted.
FTR, Snickers had the same policy

You can make a class website to post hw, have discussion etc. You don't need FB to do that. Remember, while YOU may be creating a separate account for them, they won't be creating one for you and you wll see all of their dirty business. It may also give them a false sense of "closeness." I teach HS and do not accept anyone who is currently enrolled in my school. After graduation, we're cool.
It's really nice to see where some of my students are now. I just got requested by a girl who is in her 2nd year of Law School, another has his MBA and instead of getting a "job" he is doing stand up comedy, one is a photographer for the NYT, others have joined the military. I don't think that once a kid leaves your classroom you necessarily have to leave each others lives. I also don't think that teaching is a profession that is always fits the definition of "professional" to a T.
Maybe I have had cool students, but I kind of like keeping up with some of their doings.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I have a few close former students that I am FB friends with. I would NEVER let a current student in! And as a rule, I never friend them and only accept requests of kids I knew outside of the classroom too because I usually know their parents.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I am friends with some teachers on facebook. I'm over 10 years out of HS so it's an adult-adult relationship. I invited some elementary school teachers and college professors to my wedding and went to visit college professors when they moved to FL, but that's all adult-adult.
I work as a tutor part time. I do NOT friend my students on facebook nor their parents. I have good relationships with some of the families I've been working with that maybe go beyond teacher-student. Because I'm in their homes, it's a more personal relationship, but I would still not friend anyone on facebook or really socialize with them outside of classes. I might have dinner with them after a lesson, or show them my wedding pics, but this is ALL with the parents present. Even if the family trusts me and we have a good relationship, I'm VERY careful not to cross that line. If they want to friend me when they are ADULTS, as in over 18, or maybe even over 21, i might consider it, but as of now I'm still in kind of a fiduciary relationship with them and think it's not appropriate.
With my CCD kids I have special needs so i have these kids for YEARS, so i get to know some of them and their families quite well.I was confirmation sponsor for one of my students so I try to keep in touch with him and see how he is doing, but I still wouldn't friend him on facebook.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I have no interest in friending my former HS teachers. I'm lucky if I even remember an elementary teacher's name
When I was in grad school, a peer was friends on facebook with at least 2 professors. I was so uneasy about that, since she was friends with our whole cohort and we would ***** and moan about the workload all the time... Now that I'm 5 years out of grad school I would still never be friends with a professor on FB. It's just not my style...

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
Nope. But 9 out of 10 of my former teachers were CRAP. In fact, the only teacher I had that made any sort of difference in my life (and was an excellent teacher to boot) turned out to be dating a high school student. Go figure.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I am not. I would maybe want to see how some college professors are doing but haven't reached out to them on FB.
Someone in my family is a teacher and she is friends with FORMER students. I don't belive any current students. She even has some babysit for her. Not that it couldn't happen but to my knowledge, mostly girls that she used to coach and teach.

Not a one. I also won't accept find requests from my students moms either. They don't need to know anything about my personal life. It's none of their business.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I've been out of hs over 10 years and I'm friends with one of my old teachers. She has long retired and was one of my favorites. It's an adult friendship, but if I were a teacher I would not be friends with current students - that's inappropriate.

Only college professors. But my major was broadcasting so our relationships were "laid back" to begin with.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
Nope. No interest. As much as I liked some of them, they were my teachers, not my friends, back then, and they're still not my friends now.
I get that it could be cool for them to see where their students are in life these days, or for students to see their teachers as "real people," but there's so much more to it than that on FB. It's not just a way to catch up with someone like you would if you ran into them somewhere; it really gives people an ongoing view into your personal life. My teachers don't need to see my vacation pics, I don't need to see my teachers' political views... it's just not for me.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
Yes, quite a few. I also was very close with 2 teachers while in hs. Both male. They told me some very personal things and gossip about other teachers. I knew wayyyyymore than i should have. I even hung out with my student teacher after he left my school. Looking back now, i see how wrong all of it was. Esp now having kids of my own.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
Yes, I'm friends with four or five HS teachers and one of my elementary school teachers.
I had pretty good relationships with a lot of my HS teachers (two males) to the point where I had been to their homes after I left HS. It sounds weird but were not inappropriate at all---I was just a teacher's pet

I am friends with one. I am also friends with a teacher from my elementarty school that my sister had, he was one of those teachers who was very friendly with his students parents and siblings. He set up a few reunions for our elementary school. He has since passed away.

Obviously her policy was a little more "hands on".
