Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
Not my HS teachers, but my teachers when I went back to school. So about 9 years ago.
But this is a purely professional relationship. More like networking!

1 from HS, I graduated 17yrs ago....
I believe I requested him and from what I can tell, he is friends w/a ton of ppl that graduated b/f & after me. He is one of those special teachers that actually gave a carp about his students.

No, I'm not. I'm out 25 years now??
I'm on a FB messageboard for my town & find it odd that one of the teachers actively posts & gives info on other teachers. Then again, he was "friend" teacher.
Honestly I look at it & think "Go find friends your own age."
I see nothing wrong with reaching out to a teacher, wishing them well & letting them know they made a difference if it's warranted.
FTR, Snickers had the same policy

You can make a class website to post hw, have discussion etc. You don't need FB to do that. Remember, while YOU may be creating a separate account for them, they won't be creating one for you and you wll see all of their dirty business. It may also give them a false sense of "closeness." I teach HS and do not accept anyone who is currently enrolled in my school. After graduation, we're cool.
It's really nice to see where some of my students are now. I just got requested by a girl who is in her 2nd year of Law School, another has his MBA and instead of getting a "job" he is doing stand up comedy, one is a photographer for the NYT, others have joined the military. I don't think that once a kid leaves your classroom you necessarily have to leave each others lives. I also don't think that teaching is a profession that is always fits the definition of "professional" to a T.
Maybe I have had cool students, but I kind of like keeping up with some of their doings.
Obviously her policy was a little more "hands on".

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I have elementary teachers that are family friends, my mom worked in my school...NYC DOE by the way...but it was a very "home" type school.
I am an educator, I started at 22, I am friends with some students from my first school they are now between 22-24 years old. I am not friends with any of my current students or former students under 18 yrs old/still in public school system.
IMO an educator can be friends, FB or IRL with a student once they are adult age.

I don't understand why/how this situation is so funny. People were going on and on and ON about rape and pedophelia and yet some of us still find the ability to just laugh at it. I can understand the shock value of knowing that this woman posted here and now is accused of a crime but holy crap, enough already.

I kind of agree with this. On the elephant post she was called a pedo, predator, for Christ's sake she was likened to Jerry Sandusky!
At NO POINT did I EVER or will I EVER find ANYTHING amusing about what Jerry Sandusky did and if anyone can laugh about this chick's case, well, then perhaps the comparison was a bit off?

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I am but I graduated over 25 years ago. The teacher I am friends with taught the subject that I eventually majored in. He got me into an Honors program. He is friends with some other classmates and they usually talk about sports. I would not be comfortable seeing a teacher friend students until the students are finished with college and I would not be comfortable if it was a teacher who had anything too personal on facebook. This teacher has mostly teaching related information on facebook. He has old yearbook photos, information about the teams he coached and things like that. Think of it this way, most teachers provide great guidance and to discourage that completely means that some kids will be lost in the shuffle. I was lucky in that my parents encouraged my education but the teachers who had been through my major gave me guidance that my parents couldn't. Facebook would not be the best forum for this but some kids really need their teachers in ways that ARE appropriate and teachers should not be afraid to be there for the kids academically.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I'm friends with my old middle school assistant principal (I graduated in '89 and he's retired now) and my 12th grade English teacher (graduated in '93 and he uses Facebook to announce his performances).
I'm a middle school teacher and I'm not friends with any of my former students. They always ask if they can friend me after they graduate and I always say yes....because I know they'll forget by the time they graduate. So far....I'm right.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
No, none. But I graduated in 1993.......it's been a long time and they have had LOTS of students since me so I don't really see the point of looking any of my old teachers up, I doubt they would remember me at this point in time.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
No, I'm not. I don't see anything wrong with becoming friends after the student has graduated and is an adult.
I do think it's inappropriate if the student is still in school. I teach in higher ed and even though they are technically adults, I will not FB friend any of my students ever. I see it as I'm not there to socialize with them, it's a strictly professional relationship and I want to keep it on that level.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
No. There are a few teachers on there who are friends with people. I am almost 15 years removed.
However, I do know people who teach at my old hs and are alumni. So then it would make sense to be friends with them. But, in my case, I don't know any of them in a professional sense so it would be weird, imo, to be friends with them.
At this point in my life I don't see a situation where it would arise but, I wouldn't say there in anything wrong with it.
Of the two HS teachers on FB.. one was always trying to be everyone's friend. So I see her friend requesting everyone now as a way to validate that she is cool. I think it's lame and thought it was lame in HS. The other is just a teacher and for some reason I don't see her as lame for doing it.
I would be friends with any of my grad school professors in heartbeat. Even though they were teachers it was more of an adult relationship at that point.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
Yes, some teachers and former students. Once you can run into them at a bar that everyone is allowed to be at I think it is ok. I don't post anything I wouldn't want the world seeing anyway, you never know. I would never be friends with a current student, or a student that wasn't at least a few years removed.

Re: Spinoff: Are you friends with your old teachers on FB?
I am friends with my 7th grade teacher from catholic school. Im 33..i think its ok when you're an adult to be friends with another adult who was your teacher at some point.
when 16 and 17 year olds are FB friends with their 20, 30 year old teachers..that I have a problem with.
