Yes, I had no father around and 3 uncles who made sure I could do "man" things. I could change the oil if need be and I was totally desperate.Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Could you change your own flat tire?

Gotta say no.
Unlike pumping gas this just requires a bit of mechanical inclination and I have about as much as an ant.
Plus I THINK it requires some strength- and I'm a weakling....

In this case- I have to say that I'm totally the damsel in distress... Chat Icon

yes, i know how....but if I actually needed to, I don't know if I could do it.

I actually attempted once YEARS ago at Jones Beach but the bolts wouldn't budge so my mother let some odd man drive me to an auto parts store for fix a flat!!! (I was probably 19-20 yrs old).

He had photo albums in his car ... pictures of his girlfriend and their pet monkey Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Could you change your own flat tire?

Absolutely.

I feel very lucky to have been raised in the family I have - my mother is one of 5 girls raised by a single mother (her father died when she was 5) her mother was able to raise them well, but constantly complained about how much easier their life would be if they had a man in the home. Instead of being proud of herself for raising 5 intelligent women in the 40s and 50s, she constantly told her children that life is only complete if you have a husband.

My mother was determined to never make us feel that we needed a husband to make life easier, she wanted us to know that women are capable of anything and that true happiness comes from within, it isn’t granted to you by others. I have 5 sisters and 1 brother we all know how to change oil, replace tires, do basic mechanical maintenance, cook, sew; I also do welding, but that was art school, not Mom and Dad Chat Icon

I don’t think there is anything wrong with not being able to cahnge a tire or to do other mechanical tasks, I don’t think it makes you less of a woman or a weak woman. My father taught us that it isn’t knowing how to do everything, but knowing where to find the information. So if you know you can’t change a tire or would perfer not to, but you know how and where to get it done, you’ll never be stranded. I just wouldn’t want anyone to think that they are too weak to do those things. I am also 5’2” and can lift an SUV with a jack – that’s whole point of a lever, it takes very little force to exert a much larger force on the opposite end

...the lug nuts may be a different story if they were put on with an impact wrench Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Could you change your own flat tire?

Logically, I know the steps to do in my head. I've never actually gone and DONE it......I have roadside assistance for 10 years on my car, so I don't think I'll ever need to. I honestly wouldn't know where to put the jack, I think that's the part that scares me the most.

I learned how to change a tire years ago & have done it myself before.

It is much easier and quicker for me to stand around looking at it until someone stops.Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Could you change your own flat tire?

Yup. I can also do a tune-up (not that I would), helps having a Father and Brother who are mechanics. They made sure I knew what to do before I went out

yes I can and have before. Not in a while though. I do have AAA and roadside assistance with certain cars.

I also have jumper cables in my car and a first aid kit.

Re: Spinoff: Could you change your own flat tire?

I picked other because there were no yes and no. I do know how to change one but due to a neck injury someone else has to do it. So usually I call roadside if needed or DH just does it.

Re: Spinoff: Could you change your own flat tire?

an ex-bf literally stood next to me as I hiked up my skirt and changed my own flat because he felt it was important that I learn how.... came in handy many times despite how ticked off I was that day. Now a days, I might be more likely to call AAA depending on the situation.

Nope, but I do keep a can of Fix A Flat in each car so that if I did have a flat I could get it to my mechanic to fix for me.

Re: Spinoff: Could you change your own flat tire?

I have an idea but hey thats what AAA and my roadside assistance is for- I know how to check my tires though. my computer in my car is so sensitive that the check tire soon keeps coming on an off so I needed to learn how to read the gauge and such so i didnt keep having to bring it in.
