This is a formal photograph of my maternal great-grand parents. It was taken in St. Petersburg, Russia, circa 1910.

My parents them all. I wish they were in color it would have been cool to see the actual colors they wore back in the day.
And another thing I wonder is why did noone ever smile in photos

Don't forget-beign photographed in those days was an extremely important and very formal event.
People would make an appointmet, get very dressed up, be seated and styled by the photographer. This is something that people would not do more than once a year, even if that often. It took a good amount of time and I would imagine, cost a considerable amount of money. So I think the seriousness of the event dictated the subject's disposition!

Re: Spinoff: Do you have family photos of your great grandparents or further back?
I have a picture of my grandfather as a young baby with his parents and older siblings from 1892. It is so neat to see these old photos especially since I am interested in my family's genealogy.
And, yes, it was a very big deal to go and have a professional portrait done. None of my ancestors were rich, so I think they may have only had it done once (I haven't been able to find any other portrait photographs).

Re: Spinoff: Do you have family photos of your great grandparents or further back?
I was fortunate enough to have my maternal great grandparents in my life througout my teen years and they took very good care of the pictures that they had. My paternal great grandparents had 7 boys so there aren't many photos because they didn't have the money. I am lucky to have a picture of my paternal great grandparents from their wedding day. I have it hanging on the wall in my living room.

Re: Spinoff: Do you have family photos of your great grandparents or further back?
Luckily my father put together a very thorough family tree book/album for me and my siblings. It has all sorts of pics going way back - great grandparents and even further back. I'm so happy my dad took the time to do this so it will be something I can pass down to my children.

Yes....my mother has been collecting them, scanning them and sending them to her siblings and putting together a scrapbook.
She hasn't given them to me, but she's shown me the pictures.

yes i have a few mostly 1920s and up, we have a few further back but the majority of those are with other family members. I started collecting late victorian photographs! I plan on making a whole wall art piece with them.

My dad has his grandparents, but my mom is not from the US, so I don't know. I could ask my cousin - I wonder if they have any!?

Not a photograph but we do have a painting of a relative from the Civil War. He was some kind of commander and won a bunch of battles (for the north )
