Spinoff: Holiday Tipping - need advice

We live in a building with concierges. They don't open doors for us but they do receive packages for us and greet us when we come in. That's all they do for us.

We just got a list of the 10 people who work in our building. We only know 4 people well - 3 concierges and 1 porter.

The other 6 we don't see often or haven't even met yet. They are maintenence, resident manager and back-up porters & concierges.

What do you think is an appropriate gift for the ones we know?

Do we have to give to those we don't know?

I'm no help - we have two part time doormen and a super and don't know what to give them!

When I lived in the City there was like a "pot" for money for all the staff and the holidays and they would divide it up among all of them, do they do that where you are? Like you would just contribute what you could to the holiday gift fund to be distributed equally.

I have to tip for 26 people in my bldg so my tipping scale might be different than yours but I can offer this. One year, I listened to my friends and only tip those we "knew". Well wouldnt you know, that January I come to realize WHO the other people were (people I knew worked very hard in keeping the hallways clean etc. but didnt know their names) and i felt AWFUL for not tipping them to the point that I wound up doing it in Jan.

I wish there was a pot so that the ones who do the work behind the scenes get a fair cut. I don't think there is though. We got a letter saying "Season's Greetings" and the list of names with their position and shift underneath each name.
