Spinoff, kind of, to keeping up with it all...

Ok, why is everyone so obsessed with a "clean house"? And I don't mean everyone as in LIF people, I just mean in general.
I used to be this person. The person who needed things spotless, who needed a "clean house" all the time. I still don't know why. I mean, I'm certainly not saying I have a messy house, but if there's clutter on the dining room table or the dishes sit in the sink for a day, the world goes on the same as if I were stressing and organizing and cleaning. I've made such peace with my mess to save my own sanity. Again, I guess everyone's idea of a clean house is different, if you were to come here, you'd probably wonder where the mess was that I was talking about, but still. I just can't waste any more time worrying about a messy house. Life's too short!

Re: Spinoff, kind of, to keeping up with it all...

Day to day it doesn't concern me.

It does make me crazy on some days though when it's gotten to be too much.

The problem is when it gets out of hand then it takes soooo long to clean.

Re: Spinoff, kind of, to keeping up with it all...

Because of my anxiety. I have issues in that, I think, if my house is clean and organized, my life will be too-like nothing bad will happen. I know its not true, but its my anxiety issues.

Plus, I think its easier to clean a little per day than all at once.

I NEED a clean house, but my kids' needs come 1st. Cleaning is my therapy, it truly is, a clean house is really calming for me. Clutter and dirt makes me so anxious. A disgusting bathroom could make me hyperventilateChat Icon

This was me to a T before I had Ava. You could tell the state of my brain just from looking at the house, but I have really let go of it now. It just got to the point where something had to give, and it was either going to be time to unwind and relax with my daughter, or the housekeeping. So, the housekeeping went out the window. I do still clean every Sat. morning, but I do it quickly and I don't get down and scrub stuff like I used to.

I agree with you 100%. When I saw your post on the original thread, I wanted to cheer! I feel better when the house is clean, but there are days it just IS NOT a priority. I will leave dishes in the sink sometimes. My dining room able is ALWAYS cluttered. If that isn't then my coffee table is. I try to keep the carpet vaccuumed & the floors swept, but sometimes, other things, like having a life is more important to me.

Im even more obsessed now bc I have a 2 babies that are into EVERYTHING-so I make sure everything they get into is sterilized-esp the toilet bc they are constantly finding their way into the bathroom and dropping their toys in the bowl!

I'm not obsessed and I do have some clutter, but I don't worry about it and do a "big" cleaning once a week.

Re: Spinoff, kind of, to keeping up with it all...

Rachel I hear ya!
I was never a neatnik by any stretch of the imagination.. but i used to be far more obsessive about keeping a clean house and putting things in its place. When I met and married DH, the fact he would leave magazines stacked, mail dumped on the kitchen table, clothes all over.... ahh it made me Chat Icon I only have a 2 bedroom apartment but now with DS I really let things go because I realize that HE rules the house Chat Icon and his toys are all over , his highchair, his swing, his bouncy... you get the drift of course! I find that my time spent with him is far more important than if the house is spotless...

I also don't think that anyone would walk into my home and be skeeved... and I do put away the clutter at night after DS is alseep, and I always keep my bathrooms clean..some things I cannot just let 'go' no matter how tired I am. But yet I don't dust and polish and make everything as spic and span as I should some days, and I'm come to the conclusion that it's OK Chat Icon

Its tough to keep a clean house, work, raise children, cook etc. Its possible but then you don't have too much down time.

Re: Spinoff, kind of, to keeping up with it all...

i have to have the place clean - BUT i do think there is a big difference between 'messy' and 'dirty'

i can handle something being out of place for a day or two - but i cannot deal with dust, spots on the counter, or even watermarks on the bathroom faucet. i find that i can't concentrate on other things or relax unless there is organization and cleanliness

i also think that childless people like me have more time and energy to devote to cleaning, and it is a priority. obviously that will change when there are little ones around to make a mess!

Re: Spinoff, kind of, to keeping up with it all...

my issue is more with mess then dirt

I clean- but then clothes, fighting equipment, cat toys, my shoes, DH shoes seem to get all over

maybe b/c we live in a 1 bedroom- it's harder to control?

that plus I am commuting far to work and back everyday and starting my own business on the side

DH is at work for 10 to 12 hours a day - and let's face it- he isn't much help

the only 2 real meals I cooked in the last 6 months was our anniversary and valentines day- he comes home to late to care most nights

so my options are- stop being so hard on myself and deal

or get some help- a cleaning lady- I used to have one weekly and was trying to save money by not having her come anymore (she wouldn't come to the new place- her friend would come but for more $$ and the place isn't as big)

Me too, except I never had a cleaning lady, gold toothed, or otherwise.

Some sort of repair man came to my parents' house & asked my mother if anyone lived there, b/c it was spotless.
I was so jealous--that's my goal. Chat Icon I know, I have issues. Chat Icon

But in all seriousness, when I am more orgnaized, I am on time more, b/c I don't have to hunt down my keys, iron something last minute, etc, and I don't break things , b/c I stepped on them or knocked something over that was precariously balanced somewhere it shouldn't have been.

For me I'm obsessed because it causes me more stress to have a messy house. It's weird. I actually get so overwhelmed that I end up doing nothing and it gets worse and I'll stop doing thing like going to the gym or running errands and basically sit around and think about how stressed I am about it. Crazy I know so I've learned to really try to stay on top of it for my own sanity. That and I'm paranoid about unexpected guests, which never happen. Chat Icon

Clean house is not on my list of top priorities. Yes, I woud probably be embarrassed if someone were to come by unannounced. It's clean, just messy with toys and such. Plus, we are always having some sort of house project going on, so the construction mode doesn't help. I have grown so used to it, it really doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

If I lived in NY then I would be more lax about it. Australia has roaches. A clean house keeps them away and doesnt attract them...

My house is a MESS with all capital letters. My dining room table is half filled with mail, papers...its my filing system basically! I keep certain rooms uncluttered, this way I can live for one moment in one room that makes me feel like I have a really tidy house!

I do clean though...so its okay.

eta...I hate myself for being a slob. I keep meaning to get a cleaning lady in...but I never have the time to get everything cleaned up enough to get someone in!!!
