Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
Now that we've all BTDT, has your opinion changed on hand me downs?
I've always taken hand me downs that were offered to us and I've taken some used baby items off of here too. I think I would just not take a used car seat or crib if it was old, old.
I'm curious to see if once you are a parent you see how much crap you need, if people's opinions changed
ETA: I guess I was surprised that girls are staying they want EVERYTHING new, KWIM?

I never had a problem with hand me downs---we welcome them for DS definitely!! He is the youngest of 11 nieces/nephews, so we have been lucky!!

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I am a little picky so I still don't take a ton of hand me downs. I did get some thrift store stuff when I was pregnant with DD but hardly used most of it. I just try to sale shop and resell on ebay when I can. That being said we don't get offered a ton of hand me downs.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I had an issue with it. I wanted all new stuff for my first kid.
But situations change and now I'm alll about the hand me downs.
Luckily I've got some great resources for them it seems.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I wanted everything new - and really still do.
There are certain things I will take as hand-me-downs - but I really need to know where they are coming from and it depends on the item.
ETA: But I am all about passing my stuff on for other people to use!

Hand me down clothes are actually better for baby. They have been washed so many times that the chemicals have been washed away

Pretty much the same here. Especially things like the crib and furniture. I did get a bassinet from my SIL that I gladly accepted and used, and a exersaucer from my brother that we also used.
Clothes I have no problems with. Love hand-me-downs because some of the clothes are better and nicer than the ones I buy my own kids I also pass everything along too.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
When I first found out I was pregnant, I was all about having everything brand new. But my friend had her daughter in 2005, and she saved us tons of money by giving us her DD's exersaucer, Fisher Price Bouncy seat, and some unisex sleepers and blankets for Joey. When we have another, if baby # 2 is another boy, I would not have any problems using most of Joey's things for that baby.

We would be fine with hand me downs, especially if they came from family.

If it's from a close friend or family member I don't mind so much. It really depends on what it is too.

Same for me as well. I realized how fast they grow out of stuff and what beautiful shape everything stays in.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I'm all for it -- I hate to see waste, and I feel very guilty that I am adding to our landfills at an alarming rate.
That being said - I didn't get hand-me-downs because all of our nices and nephews are quite a bit older -- 13 to 40 years older!! But I've bought from ebay, craigslist and Once Upon a Child. Esp. big ticket items.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
At first I told my sister "No thank you, I want him to have his own stuff" but, boy, did that change. I call her and ask her to get a bag ready and she pulls through I still buy things here and there, but, nothing wrong with hand me downs.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
Honestly, I'm not sure why anyone would be against it. Obviously if it was skeevy dirty stuff, that's different, but stuff in good condition, why not? It saves money, money that can be spent on other things. Heck, if I was a millionaire, I would still accept hand me downs and thrift shop!

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
My opinion has always been the same, even before I had DC's... hand me downs are great. Then again all of my friends have been BTDT moms for years and I knew this from them. I bought several used items for DC's and received a lot of hand-me-downs from friends. We have a network and we just keep passing along. Only thing we insisted upon new were car seats and cribs (as I wanted the cribs to match).
When you consider the short time period, sometimes only weeks, that they use some items during their first year, it is so much gear and it really adds up.
For us, considering we needed two, or in some cases 4 (two p-n-p's and high chairs for grandma's house) of many things, it only made sense for us. Less in the landfills and more $$ in the college fund.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I have been all for hand me downs, especially clothes. He wore mostly hand me downs the first year of his life. I was ready to take my brother's crib because it was exactly what we needed, but MIL really wanted to give DS a brand new one because he is her first grandchild.
Nobody has offered us any hand me down toys, so I have no opinion on that.
