Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...

I've never really had a problem with hand-me-downs, though I did want certain things new for DD...but as she's gotten older, I've gotten even more okay with hand-me-downs...especially clothes and "hard" toys that can be cleaned

Really the only things I won't take are car seats and stuffed animals...

I would love to be offered something...anything!

I buy strollers and toys off craigslist.

Honestly, I'm not sure why anyone would be against it. Obviously if it was skeevy dirty stuff, that's different, but stuff in good condition, why not? It saves money, money that can be spent on other things. Heck, if I was a millionaire, I would still accept hand me downs and thrift shop!

Check out the pregnancy board, they seem to be talking about wanting new stuff for a new baby!

I gladly accepted hand me downs as far as clothes went...and we did get some very nice stuff. It was EXTREMELY helpful, her closet is nice and full now.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...

We have gotten clothing hand-me downs but honestly I felt like the stuff, although it was in GREAT condition, was kinda out of style. I have kept a few things and used them for play clothes, but I find children's clothes to be so cheap anyway so I don't mind buying new.

We did have a hand-me-down pack n play, a hand-me-down crib, and I would take a handmedown stroller now, if it were in good condition.

I wanted everything new - and really still do.

There are certain things I will take as hand-me-downs - but I really need to know where they are coming from and it depends on the item.

ETA: But I am all about passing my stuff on for other people to use!

I only wanted new stuff when I had DD. By the time DS came along I was more open to hand me downs.

This is how I felt too!

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...

Hells yeah as long as they are clean and in good condition why not.

Big Ticket items I usually purchase on CL or Ebay.....like strollers etc. Why pay full price when you can get a slightly used one for half KWIM. I was able to get an almost brand new Bugaboo Cameleon for $425 when they sell for $900...I'd rather put my money elsewhere like in DD's savings or for vacation. The only thing I would not take as a hand me down is a car seat unless it was from my sister or close friend...other than that bring it on.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...

I think at first I had that thinking of getting everything new. But now I love hand me downs. Half of DSs toys are from his older cousins, and they are great. His exersaucer, walker, alot of clothes all hand me downs. The only things I wont take is a crib or a car seat.

I think once you realize how much you can spend on an item that your DC will use for such a short time hand me downs start looking good!

I wanted everything new in the beginning. Now I'll take hand-me-downs.

My sister warned me I'd feel this way. I still cringe when I think of how much money was spent on gifts. $60 for boppys, etc...

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...

I didn't like hand me downs when my sons were newborns. I didn't find it 'offensive' - but I wanted all brand new things for my brand new babies.

But - as they got bigger - I was happy to accept hand me downs from friends and relatives.

Some stuff was garbage - not my style or cheaply made - and they never used it. But I was surprised at how many things I really liked and kept!

Noah wears a LOT of hand me down clothing from Robbie. And he doesn't mind one bit!Chat Icon

I wanted mostly new stuff. I will always take hand me down clothes. I did end up getting a used stroller off craigslist, probably not something I thought I would do until I realized that it would be a waste to buy a new one when I could get a good condition one for half the price. I wanted all new stuff though because I am assuming that I will use all of the things I got for the next child and any future children....

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...

I'm all about the Reuse. Anything except safety-related items. I won't take used car seats, cribs, etc. Anything that relates to safety. Other than that, clothes, toys, outdoor stuff, etc. is fine with me. Both DC have plenty of "previously loved" items. I'd rather spend money for DC on more important things. College tuition, trips, upgrading the house. They will never know or care if they had some used items when they were little. They WILL know if they can afford college, or have new clothes in HS.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...

Yes. I will admit that I NEVER wanted hand me down. I am a total germophobe and I had a hard time with the concept.

I am changed a bit. One of our friends gave us a swing several months after DS was born. Hey, free stuff was not so bad after all.

I would buy used toys now if in good condition or strollers.

I still can't do the clothes though.

Yes...my opinion has changed.

When I was pregnant and when DS arrived I was not big on hand-me-downs but it had more to do with that fact that no one really offered any to me plus I'm a real type A kind of person so in my planning and plotting I had everything I needed. I like certain things (colors, styles) and for me it was just easier to get my own stuff. Of course family already knows that so they spoiled me with gift cards.

I think that if I were to get pregnant again and have a girl I would buy most of the clothing but I wouldn't refuse a hand-me-down that was in good shape. Little people clothing is too expensive to not accept something.

If I were to have a boy - hand me downs all the way - he can wear Lucas' clothes Chat Icon

I also personally feel that some children's clothes are soooo cheap - and when you hit up the sales - AND have coupons you can really make out like a bandit not paying alot of money at all. JMO!

I am one of four girls - I've had hand me downs all my life. My girls wear hand me downs. When I had my 2 girls so close together, I took everything that was given to me, and was thankful.
